• Chicago news paper fires all photography staff, thinking iPhone better than DSLR

Thing is, a Photographer is a full time position that gives relatively little that can't be managed by other full time staff members. Several papers local to me use interns, writers or editors as double duty Photographers since their other duties do not usually keep them tied up for the full duration of the working day. It's like a modern Law Office employing a full time Scribner, it just doesn't make much financial sense.
What a bad day for all three people left that read newspapers.
I read the Boston Globe, New York Times, and the local paper every day. The Globe and my local paper's websites are complete shit.
I see lots of businesspeople reading the tribune on the way to work every day sun times is just a mediocre/bad paper.
What a bad day for the three people who aren't intellectual sloths then. There's just something about paper. You won't get the same level of reflection when reading an article on your laptop or tablet, there was a study about it not so long ago if anyone remembers it. Sad to know an entire generation won't know the pleasure of reading your newspaper at a coffee-shop before you're heading to college / work.
This is all going on the assumption that there's actually anything worth reading in the paper to begin with. Spoiler alert: There isn't. The news media in general has gone so far down the shitter that most days you're better off not following the news at all.

I always found newspapers difficult to read They're so flippin huge, it's like reading one of those giant spell books from a fantasy movie And one tiny gust of wind and suddenly all the page 3 girls are scattered across the the train platform
Kind of depends on what kind of photos you're taking. If it's just boring local news and you need a photo of a street or something then a camera phone's all you need.
Eh, who cares, print media is dead anyway. Nobody wants one beautiful, expertly composed photograph on a front page when Youtube has a dozen video angles of the event in question.

Then again I never go to coffee shops either...I don't feel like I'm missing out here.
I think the news of the future should be read On Kindles rather than iPads. Wasn't there also a statement from New York Times that it's actually cheaper to give Kindles to all their subscribers than to actually print the news?
Guys I enjoy using my expensive electronics and internet subscription on a screen that can easily get a shitload of glare and newspapers are dead, I mean no one's gonna shell out a whole $1.50 for a newspaper when they can get a much slower and internet dependent source of news for only hundreds of dollars.
I use both fight me
I still prefer paper over phone. Much handier to read while eating cereal etc. in the morning. I can read several webpages worth of stuff without having to drag the screen around constantly. Also it doesn't disappear from reality when servers get busted / device runs out of battery or breaks.
I hate reading from paper, I get a headache and can only read a few minutes at a time. I can read anything fine from a monitor or television, though.
Australia still has a booming newspaper market because 1 - Can be used as a blanket 2 - Can be used as toilet paper 3 - Can be helpful if people like to make origami and other shit 4 - fucking brilliant when it comes to protecting the ground whilst painting 5 - Newspapers on phones and tablets aren't quite here yet
Why would you search for morsels of news on a three inch screen that is 97% ads, then? Granted, three lbs is far less than one.
I need scissors to adblock my newspaper, and that takes a ton of effort and gets tricky when there is print on both sides. My tablet is on the lookout for open wifis, and updates all of my feeds whenever I spend more than a minute or so in a known one. I get the top 20 submissions and full articles (alas, with no images to cut bandwidth and update time) for every site and news source I like to read. So when I sit down in a restaurant, I have the major city newspapers, Livleak's video summaries (so I can watch for relevant uploads), the local paper, Cracked, various tech sites, and several other sources right at my fingertips.
Oh don't get me wrong, I'm fond of reading articles on the net and on my nexus 4. It just won't replace the concentration you're gonna get by reading it on paper. I'd rather read a paper than the new website [editline]4th June 2013[/editline] I also like buying and reading magazines and I'd rather read a physical book that a book on a tablet
