No, the conservative party got 40% of the votes, which is not a majority.
Don't know know how you missed election 2011... http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadavotes2011/story/2011/05/02/cv-election-main.html
Majority of Canadians voted Harper in. I am not saying you are right or wrong. But the justification behind the statement was very harsh and uncalled for. You are also not talking in hindsight. So everything you just said is accusation and not accurate in any sense. Layton stepped down 2 months ago, and since then, Harper has not did anything drastic.
I meant, he runs a minority of Canadian voter support government.
I'm actually pretty sad that Jack Layton died, I will always remember his mighty moustache.

Do you know how your own electorial system works?

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadavotes2011/story/2011/05/02/cv-election-main.html
Wow, thanks for proving you don't understand our very own parliamentary system. good job. [editline]22nd August 2011[/editline]
He runs a minority government.
Nope. He has a majority right now even if he won with a minority of the votes.
They got a majority of the seats but you don't need to have a majority of the votes to do that in Canada. Do you know how your own electorial system works?
I messed up the statement. Oh well.
Don't know know how you missed election 2011... http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadavotes2011/story/2011/05/02/cv-election-main.html
If your eyes will travel 6 inches to the right...
If your eyes will travel 6 inches to the right...
Yeah, Majority Government.
Yeah, Majority Government.
Good thing you noticed that 40% is bigger than 30%, but you didn't realize that 40% doesn't make a majority nor should it. Why...? Because that's not a majority of the people, that's not even a wide minority.
Yeah, Majority Government.
I prefer to call it broken system think about it 60% of the country voted AGAINST the party that now has absolute power where did democracy go? is it under the couch cushions? nope just some coins!
There goes my dreams of a half-decent PM.
Opposition is probably as far as the NDP will ever get, even if he had survived.
Turned on the TV this morning and this was the first thing I saw, R.I.P
I shook Jack Layton's hand once :smith:
Unfortunately, I doubt it. Politicians like him are few and far between, and whoever this interim leader lady is definitely doesn't seem to be able to fill the void Jack left. He was the NDP, and it's going to take nothing short of a miracle to find someone like him who shares his views.
Umm the entire NDP party shares his views. They'll just pick another person out of the party to lead. Their party platform is already established, and anyone involved in the party knows what the fuck the party's views are. It's not like they're going to turn around and be like, oh hey we're conservative now.
I shook Jack Layton's hand once :smith:
Same, he was very charismatic but his speech did nothing for me.
I prefer to call it broken system think about it 60% of the country voted AGAINST the party that now has absolute power where did democracy go? is it under the couch cushions? nope just some coins!
Yeah, this is why I've been saying that election systems shouldn't be geographically based. If the Conservatives get 40% of the federal vote, they get 40% of the seats. As it turned out, each district split the liberal vote between NDP and the Libs, so then the Conservatives got just enough votes to win the district and take control of all the liberal votes that were split. Geographic election systems pretty much means your vote isn't worth shit if your candidate loses. Democracy is pretty shit overall.
Can't we just fight to fucking fix our country election system? Nah, I guess we'll just riot again for losing an hockey game instead.
Can't we just fight to fucking fix our country election system? Nah, I guess we'll just riot again for losing an hockey game instead.
Such heavy cynicism is probably the most unattractive quality a person can have. Jack Layton always said you should be the change you want to see, so why don't you go out and join politics and fix our electoral system? Obviously it won't work, but at least it'll give you something to do aside from sitting around feeling smug and superior to the people who run the country. Maybe if people like you were a part of the political system you would understand how insanely hard it is to make large scale changes.
It was just a joke but okay, take it very seriously!
wait what noooo
It was just a joke but okay, take it very seriously!
I'm sure it was. A lot of people take an opportunity like this to act high and mighty over the political system. I'm just calling you out on the fact that you're not accomplishing anything and if you were actually given the chance to be a part of the opposition you wouldn't have a clue what to do.

But, I'll keep complaining about the broken political system though, because I can and I should.
The best Prime Minister Canada never had. It'll be tough to find someone to replace him. Even if everyone in the party shares his views, Layton was very charismatic and came across as a man who was running not simply to win and put his party in power, but because he honestly believed in what he thought and wanted to make Canada greater than it already is. It's hard to find politicians that come across as genuine the way Layton did.
I am greatly saddened to hear of this great man's passing. Rest in peace, and may they find another to led in his stead.
i FUCKING HATE CANCER
" wheres your plan harper? Underneath your sweatervest?" - Jack Layton I miss him :(
From his facebook page a month ago also his dying letter to canada http://www.ndp.ca/letter-to-canadians-from-jack-layton
