I agree, people should just go back to libraries and books and enjoy having out of date information especially if they're doing some sort of science course.
Funny thing about out of date information, my sociology 101 course had no less than 3 errors in the textbook, and it had a 2015 publication date. The company was notified and they will have them fixed in the next years version.
I'd have to agree that it's obviously not as important as "food, shelter and water", but the internet is such an essential part of our society at the moment that if the entire web just shut down this instant we'd have a massive fucking catastrophe on our hands. Some jobs actually require an individual to have an internet connection in order to work. I don't know what he hopes to accomplish by blurting out this nonsense, or why the hell he's still working at the FCC.
You can't even get most jobs without an internet connection. Without a job you're not going to be able to afford necessities such as food, water, and shelter. Most places do not accept paper applications anymore unless it's a small company or a mom and pop shop. We shouldn't claim it as a human right because that sounds ridiculous, however that doesn't detract away from the fact that it's still very important for everyone to have.

You don't need for survival, but in order to function at all in society, you pretty much need at least basic access to it.
That guy really is out of touch with today's world. Obviously the internet can't be compared to Water, Food and Shelter, but I don't think anybody is debating this. He just threw that in to make his point look more valid - too bad it's still a fallacy.
O’Rielly said in a speech Thursday. “Instead, the term ‘necessity’ should be reserved to those items that humans cannot live without, such as food, shelter, and water.”
Well, we can live without shelter, and with much less food and water that we are consuming right now. We would be able to live, but would we want to live this life? We can also live without power, but this would set us back a century in technological advancements. Electricity and the internet are things that improve the quality of life. And, what many people have said, not having an internet connection disconnects you from the rest of society. Maybe not as much right now, but in the future, you cannot live a normal social life without an internet connection, that's just where the world is going. And then there's jobs. Today, and surely in the years to come, knowledge on basic computer and internet usage is assumed. Not having these skills is a major disadvantage. Maybe old and ignorant republicans can live without internet, since they don't have to worry about things like finding a job, but most of us cannot.
we're not in the 90's anymore omg wake up
we're not in the 90's anymore omg wake up
Or even better, they should take their medicine and go back to sleep, so we don't have to listen to their petulant greedy whining. AND they get to wake up just in time for Salisbury steak and bingo! So all in all it's a win-win situation.
