let people have faith, and why should we care unless they're blowing it in our faces
this is why this whole thing is hypocritical, Atheist complain that religion is shoved down our throats yet they do the exact same to believers.
I think you're generalizing both sides here.
personally I try to avoid religion conversations

"Friends who want to stay friends, don't discuss religion or politics."
Why can't everyone just accept each others beliefs and not be dicks?
because religion prevents scientific progress and holds back research that could save millions of lives.
only when faith is completely eradicated can live-saving medical science (eg stem cell research) advance.
I never understood billboards concerning religion, lack thereof
Disagreeing with beliefs is one thing, but I dunno if anyone's core beliefs have been shaken to the point of change due to a billboard
Funny how in america, atheism is being shoved in people's faces far more than any religion is these days.
wow
cunts
I love it just because not only does it enrage Atheists here because they're being mean, but it gets Christians mad because... they're being mean!
Who wins? Me.
Funny how in america, atheism is being shoved in people's faces far more than any religion is these days.
There's a big disconnect between the commonality of things reported in the news and how common they actually are; they're not going to bother talking about all the Christian advertising, preaching and whatnot because it's so common what with the majority of the US being Christian. Atheists being dicks makes news because it gives people their cherished few minutes of rage (a part of Fox News' business strategy to keep their viewers interested, for example)

ahahahaha you're not serious are you?
when was the last time an atheist tried to knock on your door to deliver the good word of dawkins?
out of all the towns in the usa, how many have atheist signs or displays? how many have religious signs or displays?
how many times has our congress decided that this nation was not founded under any god or that god was not a source of inspiration for the country?
how many times have you looked down at your money and seen anything except "in god we trust"?
Bashing others religion doesn't mean you're right.
When religious indoctrination is embeded in your cultural heritage I guess you CAN go as far as that. I don't like it, pissing people off is not the way to change it, but I can understand it.
Bashing others religion doesn't mean you're right.
Yes and a wet street doesn't mean it's raining but nobody claimed that in the first place so what's your point?
I'm an atheist, and I dislike the myth stuff as much as the next guy. But this is really unnecessary and kinda disrespectful.
It's an informative poster; It's not disrespectful in any way, shape or form to anyone or anything. Those who are blind to reality might get offended, but that's because they live in their own little world and our rules do not apply to them.
the point is to piss people off. it's showing people that atheism is a growing demographic in the usa and that atheists aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
it's basically saying "get used to the fact that you(christians) are not the only group with the power to advertise or express yourself publicly anymore".
Wow, that billboard sure makes we want to be an atheist.
If they want to send the message that you can celebrate the winter holidays without any religious affiliation, they could've formulated it in a less dickish way. Delivering your message in a condescending and provocative manner won't gain you much favor outside of your own ranks, Atheist movement.

Is being a complete asshole a prerequisite for joining American Atheists?

You do realise that there is a vast number of religious people who accept and encourage the progress of science, right?
People really need to stop making blanket assumptions.
The point is not to piss people off, but to inform others of the situation and convince others to stop believing in false information.
i disagree. if anyone thinks the billboard will really convince anyone anything then i think they are missing the point. it's there to promote tolerance through showing that there is no other choice besides tolerance. it's saying atheism and humanism can no longer be ignored or misunderstood because now atheists and humanists have the capital to actually buy ad space and possibly do more in the future.

They are proposing that we keep the 'Christmas spirit' of gifting/receiving presents, spending quality time with family and friends and overall having fun, while at the same time steering away from spending that time worshiping and/or celebrating a myth.
LETS RUIN EVERYONE FUCKING HOLIDAYS
christmas is ruined due to this billboard, yes okay that makes sense we'll run with it
So there are thousands of Christian billboards across the U.S and Canada. But suddenly when an atheist does it, people get mad? If you're going to hate on the atheist billboard, you have to hate on the Christian ones as well.
Don't really see the problem with those billboards, honestly

well yea but i think that statement is more superficial and not the real reason for the billboard. i dont think the person who designed or approved the billboard, or the person who bought the ad space thought it would really do much except stir some controversy.
i think the war on christmas bullshit is as good for the atheist movement as it is for fox's ratings.
also that billboard is bizarre, did nobody run it by AA that santa claus is a myth too?

I've never seen a billboard insulting the others beliefs. Why? Because it isn't allowed in Canada.
also that billboard is bizarre, did nobody run it by AA that santa claus is a myth too?
The billboard says "Keep the Merry", not "Keep the Santa Claus". Also, Santa Claus is a myth that is known by 99% of the adult population as false. Santa Claus simply represents the 'Keep the Merry' message they are attempting to deliver.

Anti-intelligence is Stupidity
Stupidity leads to Extinction
Why do you have to be a cunt to everyone else? Why not just believe in the God of Presents?
I've never seen a billboard insulting the others beliefs. Why? Because it isn't allowed in Canada.
It doesn't say "Christians are shit" or anything like that though. It only says that it's a myth and if you look into the holy books of the 3 major religions they all say that other religions are false.

YOU CAN'T PROVE THAT!
