i still am holding out that someday GM will take that awesome 2.5L diesel engine they built for the cruize and couple that with a hybrid drive system, the range on it would be ungodly
like going from berlin to warsaw and back on one tank of gas
It's sad to see legislators attempt to block such a good and progressive company as Tesla like this.
I won't stop people from making or driving electric cars, but I never want one. I can replace any part on my current car myself, in my driveway, without having much to worry about. Can you replace the brushes in those electric motors in your driveway? What about the batteries? What about upgrading it for more power? See, these are the things I don't like about electrics. I'm not downing people who own them, they just aren't my cup of tea personally.....
There are no brushes in Tesla's motors! Brushes are for the weak!
Electric cars are actually easier to understand, modify, and maintain. I've actually had some time working on high voltage drive-trains. The fact that you can get performance gains by just soldering new parts into your motor controller is so cool.
I can guarantee you within 20 years we will see a tuner culture for electric cars, right now no one really wants to modify their 70k+ luxury sports sedan... or do they?!
Saleen, most famous for their muscle cars, is planning on doing a tuned version of the Model S!

OH MY GOD
Are the batteries in these actually good or are they like Priuses where they are really really bad for the environment to make and dispose of.
Flat 4 turbo 4lyfe, you'll never take my Subarus from me.
Are the batteries in these actually good or are they like Priuses where they are really really bad for the environment to make and dispose of.
I don't know about how environmentally friendly the batteries are. All I know is that they hold a charge forever and, coupled with both in-home charging and the upcoming storm of Tesla stations, they'll never run out.
If you know how to tamper with electronic circuits without cooking yourself I don't see any reason why you couldn't. However the rest of the car is optimized to work with that particular motor and you'd probably need to upgrade everything down the line in order for it to not fry on you. But tampering with the high voltage system is considerably more dangerous than replacing a few parts on an ICE engine.
[editline]11th March 2014[/editline]
I don't think EVs will replace ICE. I think they'll just take over a large portion of the work. Enthusiasts and Jeremy Clarkson fans will always have their cars.
[editline]11th March 2014[/editline]
Except they'll be running off clean algae fuel.
[editline]11th March 2014[/editline]
And that's a future I agree with because I understand the love for loud motors. But my future daily driver will be a Tesla.
I would love that algae crude. Imagine a world where gasoline prices are VERY stable and predictable. As long as I can get the 93 Octane my car requires, I'm happy as a clam.
I also think that EVs will ever fully replace ICEs. I do think that the majority of city/suburb drivers will have them though. Us country folk will always have our trucks to haul things and pull trailers (and go mud riding). I also think that you won't get rid of the ICE due to a key factor right now for a lot of people: power and speed. I mean while I don't have as much power as the model S performance (yet ;) ), I'll still pass it doing 160+. I'm sure this will change soon enough, but ICEs will, for the foreseeable future, outperform EVs for less money when it comes to power and speed...

But then it'd have fake/little engine noise, or no noise at all.
Lol. Read all the posts made by Don, he really doesn't like Obama.
I don't get why people refer to Obama as Oblamo. As far as derogatory nicknames for him goes, there are far funnier sounding names than Oblamo. (like Obongo for starters)
Whats even the reasoning behind the nickname Oblamo in particular? Is it a play on "blame"?
Are the batteries in these actually good or are they like Priuses where they are really really bad for the environment to make and dispose of.
Tesla recycles them to make more batteries at the end of their life. The cells are basic Panasonic laptop batteries in a big fancy metal case. However not enough of them are made a year and Tesla has hit a bottle neck in production of their cars. So they're going to build a 5 Billion dollar factory to produce more batteries than the rest of the world over.

Don't read too far into it.
Us country folk will always have our trucks to haul things and pull trailers (and go mud riding).
I think people who pull trailers for a living would warm up to an electric truck real fast after they see how much torque they can put out, and not having to deal with gas prices, and (in Teslas case) being able to replace a battery in 90 seconds to minimize downtime... I think a Tesla truck would be a hotshots dream car.

Honestly, I could careless. I want cars with a sexy look. One of the main reasons I have always despised electric cars up to recent(aside from the Tesla), is this fucking "OH MY GOD SO MODERN" look which is utter shat. I wish companies would start investing in just making electric cars with a decent muscle car look, or aim for 1950's space age cars with fins.
Also, can car companies just go back to the 50's and 60's for Dashboard designs?
Or its because theirs a severe lack of Tesla Charger stations in those states, so people don't buy Tesla Cars for economic reasons?
Tesla never intended for people to use the superchargers for everyday charging, that's why they build them along popular routes but rarely at the actual destinations. Also why they're totally free.
They're to encourage people to take roadtrips in their Tesla and essentially provide free advertising.

But a Challenger isn't a Challenger without a roaring engine.
Besides, we're only recently getting into the electric car phenomena. I'm sure once Tesla booms into the mainstream of cars, we'll be seeing a lot more variance among electric cars.

Well that's what I'm stating. You have very few chargers in the northern states for taking road trips, so it's not really feasible at the moment to take them for roadtrips. Not to mention, I'm unsure of how Teslas would deal in -30/-40

I was talking more about people who don't use their trucks for hauling for a living, but still need to haul things from time to time, and go into muddy areas. 4x4s and such. Not jimbo the trucker, more like bubba and his chevy.... lmao

Related: The Model S has traction control that you can't fully turn off. But if you remove some fuses...

I think they have a battery life calculator on their site that states how it would be affected under certain conditions such as extreme cold.

The Model S has reduced range and power when it starts up in colder weather.
As it heats its self up through normal operation the battery life "comes back". However, to prevent a dead battery when you park in the cold, it gives you your low battery warning sooner.

I live there and I want a Tesla car :(
The Bakkens Oil Field would be a good reason to start investing into North Dakota charger-areas. A lot of people here have the money to purchase stuff, and the North Dakotan government is giving massive tax breaks to people offering technologies for renewable energy.

Their Canadian situation sucks, especially their western Canada situation which will probably never improve. They could cover basically every potential Tesla owner in western Canada with maybe 8 superchargers. (One on Vancouver Island, one around Kamloops or Kelowna, Banff, between Calgary and Edmonton, Drumheller, west of Saskatoon, between Saskatoon and Regina, and west of Winnipeg)
More would be ideal but with that someone from Winnipeg could likely make it to Vancouver no problem, from there the whole west coast opens up.
You'd think they'd jump on Canada, we have basically one highway that everyone taking a road trip to anywhere will use for most of their route.

Whoops! North Dakota is nice! Just very flat..
You'll have three superchargers by end of 2015. Don't know when you'll have a showroom or service center but you can always order one online and they'll hand deliver it to you. (along with a guy that explains everything)

Flat is good for efficiency. Less superchargers needed!
Out of curiosity, will they deliver anywhere that roads go? Like if I was rich and wanted one up here in Flin Flon, Manitoba, would they do it?

I'm sure they will eventually. You'll be able to go from Vancouver to Red Deer by end of 2015. After the US is fairly saturated I'd think Canada would be the next logical step.

They delivered a few to Alaska so I don't see why not. They'll also come pick it up and take it to the nearest service station if you need that. (and give you a replacement Model S)
