But it does promise blazing-fast speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second
Promise. I'm promised 1mb/s. I'm getting something that people from the 90's would laugh at. Watch as it turns out to only be 1gb/s if the solar system aligns, 9/10th's of the population is dead, and Jesus himself hand delivers the packets.
DSLReports brings the rain to the parade, grab your umbrellas.
Before you get too excited, you need to understand that this is a bluff of immense proportion. It's what I affectionately refer to as "fiber to the press release." Ever since Google Fiber came on the scene, AT&T's response has been highly theatrical in nature. What AT&T would have the press and public believe is that they're engaged in a massive new deployment of fiber to the home service. What's actually happening is that AT&T is upgrading a few high-end developments where fiber was already in the ground (these users were previously capped at DSL speeds) and pretending it's a serious expansion of fixed-line broadband. It's not. At the same time AT&T is promising a massive expansion in fixed line broadband, they're telling investors they aren't spending much money on the initiative, because they aren't. AT&T's focus is on more profitable wireless. "Gigapower" is a show pony designed to help the company pretend they're not being outmaneuvered in their core business by a search engine company. The press release admits as much if you look carefully. "This expanded fiber build is not expected to impact AT&T’s capital investment plans for 2014," notes AT&T. That's what they noted last year, and will surely say the same thing next year. In fact, AT&T's been reducing their fixed-line CAPEX each year. What kind of major 1 Gbps broadband expansion doesn't hit your CAPEX? One that's either very tiny, or simply doesn't exist. "Similar to previously announced metro area selections in Austin and Dallas and advanced discussions in Raleigh-Durham and Winston-Salem, communities that have suitable network facilities, and show the strongest investment cases based on anticipated demand and the most receptive policies will influence these future selections and coverage maps within selected areas," notes the company. In short, if your city plays nice and gives AT&T what they want legislatively (namely gut consumer protections requiring they keep serving DSL users they don't want so they can focus on more profitable wireless) you'll get 1 Gbps fiber to a few high-end developments and apartment buildings. As an added bonus, your local politician can hold a lovely cord-cutting ceremony where he or she pretends to be encouraging the broadband networks of tomorrow (while in reality doing the exact opposite).
I invite AT&T to prove me wrong.
How long until Comcast sues for being "unfair"?
Bring it to Upstate New York! I'm tired of Time Warner Crapble.
Yeah you guys I'm sure they'll really fuck us over with price, they have so many incentives to do that, like...you know...not making money! Considering that switching to this super-duper internet is optional as all hell they have almost no reason to charge an arm and a leg because then people just won't care enough to switch. Now...if somehow an area has ONLY this gigabit internet then they have no choice, but such scenarios aren't going to happen.
hint: they already pull the stunts we're bitching about I'm the first person to come out and say people are overreacting about [big corporation] having better things to do than screw over consumers but ATT and a number of major ISPs' shitty practices actually do profit them, as they absorb more money for less service, making you pay more to remove arbitrary caps. ISPs work together constantly to make sure they all gain a good profit, by not lowering their prices too much. It's a cooperative monopoly, and it's the reason we're paying 1,200% as much money for less than 10% of the speed Japan has.
Nothing for New York? I want to get off time warners wild ride.
Bring it to Upstate New York! I'm tired of Time Warner Crapble.
I'm pretty sure everyone is. Here in Austin, they've jacked their rates for basic broadband up for five continuous years, with the bump being $7 + "fees" tacked on every year. They send you a letter with the rate hike every year too with a photocopied signature of their CEO explaining: "sorry dear customer, we must raise rates on all customers because <insert content provider here> has raised their rates for content and we must pass the cost on to you, even though you don't actually have cable TV, we hope you understand" 15/2 cable here is $75 a month.
I'm really hoping they bring it to Houston and the rest of southeast texas. AT&T has a large presence here and it'd be nice to have gigabit internet.
I like 10 minutes out of the largest city in the US (NYC), how the fuck do we still not have gigabit D:
Fuck yes, its coming right where I live.
Aww, nowhere in New Mexico, no gigabit internet for me- Oh wait. We're a piddly town compared to ABQ or Santa Fe and we're the first city in this state to get Gigabit internet. Feels good man.
Getting gigabit from AT&T is just barely a step above having 56.
Oh shit it's coming to Dallas :D
Good, I live in Chicago and I'm sick of taking several days to download a game that's only a few gigs
stay out of phoenix please i don't want your shitty uverse shit
COME TO NY WERE ONE OF THE MOST POPULATED STATES AND MY INTERNET IS ASS anyways really happy to see competition
Could there be a legislative reason why NY State wouldn't get it..?
Could there be a legislative reason why NY State wouldn't get it..?
The only real reason I can think of is that upstate doesn't have enough internet infrastructure. And the NYC metropolitan areas infrastructure is too complicated to work with.
I'd rather have stability and higher upload speeds than gigabit internet. Now if AT&T can do both (lol), then that'd be pretty sweet!
Why do I have to live in a country that believes 25/25 Mbit/s is plenty for the average consumer? ;-;
iirc its 70 a month pretty damned good deal for the best internet ever
What the fuck I pay $60 a month for 700KB/s DSL
Bandwidth caps are the problem for me, i'm fine with my speed..
What the fuck I pay $60 a month for 700KB/s DSL
Because there is likely a monopoly or duopoly. The major ISPs have worked together to not compete much with each other so they can keep prices high.
I'm glad they've announced gigabit in the Research Triangle area already
I doubt it would matter even if they came to my hometown. They'll still throttle Twitch so hard that it'll barely work.
NO FUCKING LOVE FOR LOUISIANA! God damnit...I want gigabit internet. :suicide:
Watch as they implement a 5 GB cap, and from then on it's throttled to 10mbps for the rest of the month.
Sounds good to me, I'm lucky to even get 200kbps..
http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/google-fiber-challenge-t-eyes-100-cities-super-fast-internet-n86091 This is great, we really need more competitors in this.
No Tampa/St Pete God damn it GIVE ME GIGABIT INTERNET
Woo st louis!... Now how much will i have to pay?
What the fuck I pay $60 a month for 700KB/s DSL
Wow.. I pay 70 for 30mbs down
I live like 10 minutes outside of Jacksonville and I feel like its going to bite me in the ass. That being said at&t here drops your connection every 30 minutes for 2-3 minute periods and lands you with a new IP every time
