Good, death penalty is much needed to clear out the scum, but of course only when there is much evidence, don't want any innocents being executed.
Killing someone to 'get rid of the scum'? That's a very barbaric outlook on criminal justice.
Why not just wear a swastika, Shad? [editline]23rd March 2013[/editline] I mean, seriously, are you retarded or something? A country of over a billion people and you think one white victim is the whole reason that the people are pushing for change? What, all those brown women not important enough? Not human enough? Because whether or not you realized that you were implying that, that's sure as fuck what you were implying. Maybe you didn't realize just how stupid that sounded, but damn, that made my blood boil.
I'm on your side. I thought the new delhi rape was the white girl because it said student, I should have probably researched more before posting. I'm saying it (would have) sucked if the only reason they're enacting the law is because the attention they got from the poor white girl being raped when there's a whole lot of rape happening to its actual citizens. [editline]23rd March 2013[/editline]
20 years to life, even the death penalty for rape?
They need to make extreme punishments for the crimes because they largely go unpunished, it helps deter rape. Not every rapist is going to be caught, so in order to increase the perceived risk of doing something illegal you can make the punishment very extreme.
Blah blah blah Facepunch arguing over trivial matters. I for one think it's great that there is at least some swift action in India's political house on this. Not only is this terrible in general, but it kills tourism as well for both Indians, and other folks that want to travel to India safely.
Passing laws like this sure are good, but I'm wondering if they shouldn't be cleaning up their politicians first.
Jagdeep Chhokar, a retired professor and a founder of the body, said the number of politicians in India’s 552-member national lower house of Parliament who are facing criminal charges, including rape, has increased by a third since 2009 to 162 lawmakers.
http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2012/12/30/in-india-parliament-members-face-rape-charges/
And then we're the xenophobic sexist cunts.
what
the minimum sentence for gang rape, rape of a minor, rape by policemen or a person in authority will be doubled to 20 years and can be extended to life without parole
I personally believe that rape by a police officer or a person in authority should be much harsher. They are put in a position to uphold certain standards set by society and then use that position to abuse it? Yeah, give them 40 years. Not 20.

I definitely overreacted.

An single individual can't be held responsible for a flawed legal system. Furthermore, do you think 20 years is that much more deterring than, say, 2 years? I don't think any rapist plans on getting caught. So basically you're just destroying their lives, probably making them more prone to resort to crime in the future. Or hey, let's just convict 10 rapists every year and torture them in public. That'll show 'em.
those poor rapists
Why not make an actual argument? Or are you some kind of uncivilized barbarian who doesn't think criminals have rights?
those poor rapists
You need to look past their crime and view them as people. Yes, they did some disgusting stuff, but that doesn't mean they deserve to bear a punishment designed to 'make up' for the unpunished rapists. Like my learned friend said, that road leads to a quota of criminals being hanged in public as an example. It's not justice and it doesn't belong in the justice system.
Hasn't it been pretty well proven by the US justice system that harsher punishment like the death penalty do very little to deter people from committing crimes?
Great, so they try and fix one immoral problem and bolster another - the death penalty.
