New USB-standard 3.1: "SuperSpeed USB", up to 100W powerdelivery, and now: DisplayPort compatability

I don't think people realize how awesome this is. No one fucking pays any attention to Displayport, this will ensure that people start.
Building it to handle all the contacts touching each other as it is plugged in could be tricky to say the least
Jack-style plugs are fucking awful for digital signals.
Imagine the day where every single component on your computer connects together using something like USB, creating a large rectangle made from smaller ones.
This looks really damn cool, things like external GPUs and monitors could be considered practical with this sort of thing.
Then your apple owning friend comes over and wants to share something from his apple stuff and none of your plugs work

it's a good thing im not friends with apple owners.

damn it'll be the 1980's all over again
Except the other end of the iPhone cable is USB, so :v:
I wonder if we could have USB connector done like one of these 4 contact jacks.

Would be basically the best thing.
as long as it fixes this shit

I still haven't gotten to use 3.0 to it's fullest extent yet. I should get on that.
I still hate this thin connector bullshit.
Enjoy snapping your connectors off.

I kinda agree, my phones charge/usb port is getting really loose and doesn't feel like it holds solid anymore

I think the metal casing should extend a couple more mm into the plastic shell to keep it from snapping like micro-B does
I've had my lightning cable for about a year now, still holding up pretty well...

Fun fact: usually most USB's make it incredibly obvious which is the right side.
The side with the USB logo is the one that goes face up

Besides issues with Jacks stinking for digital purposes, please note that even current USB 3.0 has more than four connections inside. They're just a little hidden

Not all plugs are like this. And that doesn't help when it is a vertical port like every single motherboard port.
I wish people would stop assuming this trick is actually applicable all the time.
Well, if Apple didn't negotiate ridiculous licensing agreements with Intel, Thunderbolt could have been a pretty viable standard. But they did, and it's prohibitively expensive to buy a license to produce Thunderbolt-compatible products unless you're Apple, or affiliated with Apple.
The only thing Apple own is the connector (Which is shared with DisplayPort), and that's offered on a royalty free licence.
The main reason it hasn't caught on much is because Intel isn't pushing it well (for whatever reason), they've only just recently made it a part of their chipset, and it shares PCIe lanes so if you're using a dedicated GFX card the performance tanks.
Edit: Also, as long as Intel don't support VT-d in their consumer chipsets/CPUs, then Thunderbolt presents a security flaw (Like Firewire does).

yeah i swear manufacturers just randomly decide which way they want the usb port to be THIS time
Finally no more getting REALLY intimate with the back of my computer
too bad it's small as shit so good luck plugging it in blindly
Wow 100 watts... you could charge your phone... so fast...

So which side of the port matches your USB cable's "up" orientation?

Well it's official
there must be 12 dedicated USB controllers so there can just be a field of ports on the back of the machine.
if everything was usb then what would happen if i plugged my mouse into my gpu

The bottom becomes a projector
The bottom becomes a projector
you know that would actually be pretty neat
My laptop's power block delivers 180W.
Aren't most laptop adapters like ~5A at ~20V?
Anyway, of course laptops with dedicated GPUs, high-end CPUs and large displays will use more power, but most laptops will do fine on 100W. Even more so with Broadwell.
How does it fare with apples thunderbolt?
Don't you mean intel's thunderbolt?

The motherboard ports are oriented correctly, you can figure which way to plug the cable from which side of the case the motherboard is attached to (usually on the right when you're facing the front of the case, so the usb logo on the cable you're gonna plug has to face left)
How the hell is it going to manage 100W through those tiny terminals?

20 amps running through a usb wire, WHAT COULD GO WRONG?
20 amps running through a usb wire, WHAT COULD GO WRONG?
I'd imagine there would be different tier cables, with thicker wiring. Those without the specs required to carry 100W would simply not have the leaders, so you don't risk damaging stuff.
Good stuff. I wonder if one day we'll have USB connectors that are not only reversible, but hermaphroditic? It'd be great to just have one connector type for everything.
Just imagine, a small PC would be able to power and drive data to an external monitor with the same cable - with wifi and a bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you could have a whole setup with a single power cable to the box and a USB cable to the monitor.
