I think 343n had a heart attack from reading this and died
no i'm still here ontopic, yay
No, i'm genuinely curios. Till a few years ago, people didn't even dare talk about halo on PC focused forums because it was 'the shitty console shooter of the time that wasn't as good as its pc counter parts'. But all of a sudden everybody is begging microsoft for halo games on pc and steam.
Despite the disagrees, you're right. Halo came out as the flagship title for the Xbox at a time where the "console wars" were big. Naturally it was targeted by fans of the other platforms. And this persisted up yo Halo 3, which was a big selling point of the 360 AND the prime competitor with COD4 which had everyone excited. But as time went on, the console wars died, COD became the dominant FPS title, and people went back and enjoyed Halo. Its like how COD4 gets a lot of praise today but back then was lambasted by people all the time. Basically, fanboyism was stronger then.
yeah people on FP used to bandwagon and dumbrate anybody who liked halo but most of us have come a long way since then
Yeah, the bandwagoning was really stunning when I first joined, partly because I was such a fan of the game at the time. The Halo modeling/mapping threads I frequented always had a lot of dumb ratings on the OP.

But all of a sudden everybody is begging microsoft for halo games on pc and steam.
It's funny that this is rated disagree, because back in the days before Modern Warfare, Halo filled the role that Call of Duty has now. It was the popular thing to hate. Every Halo thread basically devolved into a Halo vs. Half-Life shitfest.
Is there still demand for a Facepunch Halo CE server? I still have an idle server with everything set up
mines set up and mostly ready to go. Its got ~80mb upstream and a single hop to level 3. Only thing im currently lacking is maps and admins
wat [thumb]http://s23.postimg.org/5c77tnowb/screenshot_30.png[/thumb] http://xhalo.tk/serverlist/ Edit: You probably aren't using a custom client, since there are few 1.09 servers. Downgrading to 1.00 became popular for some reason, it started with aimbots and pirates mostly. The older version didn't have restrictions on injecting things into the game. Even though it's irrelevant now, most servers report to 1.00 as a blanket measure so that everyone can play. If you haven't you really should install OpenSauce or HAC2, they feature being able to join servers from either version plus raises the limits on rendering and have map downloading support.
Should I use the 1.00 client or download the 1.09 patch?
What kind of hardware do you even need for this? I'm assuming not an awful lot, in which case I could probably host shit too if people cared.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GSQMTWM/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Board in particular I'm using. This is also hosting my software router/firewall, and media server via Citrix Xen Server. The other VMs are very low resource to that gives me alot of room for shit like this.
i'd rather have reach. it's probably what i would consider to be the perfect halo game
I agree with this, but every time I think about Reach I remember 'the worst of them' spamming armour lock every time they would be close to death. If armour lock was a bit different, it would definitely be the perfect Halo game.
Multiple servers! All the cool people have multiple servers. Also, is that unused bandwidth? You could host several servers on a box with that kind of connection I also went and picked some of my favorite maps that nobody has ever played (and some new ones that look interesting) H3 Imposing Asylum Mystic The description of this map doesn't do it justice, it has a beautiful landscape of winding grassy paths with lakes to the sides, and large looming castles on each end. Portent A relatively small map, and cluttered. I still can't find my way around this map, but damn does it look cool. Immure A custom edition classic that seemed to have passed its expiration date. It is best known for ridiculous warthog turrets and the "WASP" vehicle, which is OP as fuck. Immure 2 With 200% more orange and 100% less WASP. This is supposed to be more balanced. Downflow My personal favorite. Anyone who has played custom maps recently has probably played extinction, and if you're like me, it's a barren cheap vehicle spam piece of shit. This is different, because it is beautifully made, expansive, has a diverse weaponset and still has crazy vehicles like seraphs and a scarab. At one point, this map was hugely popular, but it waned in the short time that players in general did. Revelations Autumn Slay I've only ever been able to play this map locally, since nobody ever plays this online. This map will stress the limits of Halo. If you ever wanted timberland, but flatter, and 10x bigger, you'll enjoy this. [editline]12th May 2014[/editline]
Should I use the 1.00 client or download the 1.09 patch?
Download the patch/update the game A custom client will let you play on any version server, but you have to be on 1.09 to use it.
Also, is that unused bandwidth? You could host several servers on a box with that kind of connection
Kind of sort of, this is my personal connection. I pay for 50/15, but the way my service provider does rate shaping it barely touches UDP, so i get my ONTs max throughput of 140mb/s on downstream for udp, and about 80 for upstream. It however knows that there IS traffic, it just doesnt touch it. So TCP shit gets crippled when im using more than 50/15. Reported it to service provider just so i dont get in trouble for using more than my bandwidth caps, and they are aware and are not fixing it on purpose, so if it becomes a big problem i can always just do rate limiting on my end. [editline]12th May 2014[/editline] It is currently just running hat_castel2castel as a test, but the server is up and public to the WAN, you can connect through directip at "arcticrevr.us", or on the server browser under the name "Facepunch Community Halo Server" Contact me through email at arcticrevrus@gmail.com if there is any immediate issue, I will not be home for another 6 or 7 hours. Also sorry SonicXV, i think i may have accidentally spammed the shit out of your PM inbox :suicide:
Also sorry SonicXV, i think i may have accidentally spammed the shit out of your PM inbox :suicide:
Haha, there's only a few. I've replied, at any rate. I'm going to have a thread in general games tonight, hopefully.
Download the patch/update the game A custom client will let you play on any version server, but you have to be on 1.09 to use it.
1.06 works too.

Fuck, my disc is scratched and can't install. :suicide:
Fuck, my disc is scratched and can't install. :suicide:

If you're like me and kept your Halo CD Key all these years, despite your CD getting destroyed, you're in luck. http://hce.halomaps.org/?fid=410 You can legally download Halo CE from there, and use your key to install it. Afterwards, you can then use the patched .exe, linked in the article, to update and play with the new features.

It's so ingrained in people's minds because it had a demo which while only one map brought a lot of people into online FPS gaming.
I am certainly one of those people, now that I look back on things.
This is so fucking badass, so happy that bungie still cares about this game. One thing I do hope they fix though, is the missing shaders in the PC port. I with the PC port could look as good as the xbox version.
Once again, server is up and running about im going to be putting up some old fun maps. As per my previous post, you can join at ip "arcticrevr.us" or just look for "Facepunch Community Halo Server" in the browser. I am going to sit in there and be lonely untill some people show up. [editline]12th May 2014[/editline] Oops, messed up my NAT rules, should be up in 10 minutes [editline]12th May 2014[/editline] good to go

I with the PC port could look as good as the xbox version.
There's still a fan-made patch floating around that's supposed to restore said shaders. I found it on an old HaloMods forum thread, but avast! threw up some malware warning while visiting it. The file itself appears to be clean though, so I can re-upload it to Dropbox or something. Here it is. It's a patch file, so use HHT or something else capable of patching Halo's bitmaps file.
You broke it.
sent you a steam request, pain in the ass to troubleshoot this on the same end the box is on
Well im in the shitter, I have the disc (orignal disc from launch, my disc drive even reads it fine) but my CD Key has gone poof. What do?
Well im in the shitter, I have the disc (orignal disc from launch, my disc drive even reads it fine) but my CD Key has gone poof. What do?
shit out of luck im afraid, was in the same boat untill about a month ago where i bought it off amazon also i *appear* to have fixed it, somebody joined the server for like 10 seconds while i was looking at something else and left since the server was empty
Well im in the shitter, I have the disc (orignal disc from launch, my disc drive even reads it fine) but my CD Key has gone poof. What do?
Would this work? http://halo.bungie.org/news.html?item=16932

Halo has some the easiest editing tools to learn. OpenSauce already adds tons of features (e.g, map downloading, rendering upgrades, and limit increases for rendered particles, objects, max map size, etc)

I wonder if my computer will be shown as having enough RAM now, instead of throwing an error on 4 GB+ systems.
I have 8GB and I've never gotten that error.
I have 8GB and I've never gotten that error.
Mine shows as having 0 MB of RAM. Granted you go straight through anyway, but its done it on every system I have had with that much RAM.
