It was pretty fucking obvious that he never had their votes in his campaign to begin with, so why bother trying to win them over at the expense of a larger, more influential group?

TBH if one of these assholes actually said "Wait, okay, you guys represent a chunk of this country, which I want the most prominent executive position of, and yet I clearly can't currently represent you in office- something is wrong here if there's an automatic assumption of failure with a demographic, and that merits looking into"- even that kinda of bullshit sidestep, I'd at least go "well, the dude's semi-cognizant at a minimum" and have less of a problem with people who wanted to vote for him.
You gotta remember, people who won't vote for him are still influential prior to the actual election, because we laugh off people. Part of what made Obama was the GOP talking about him so damn much. If Gingrich actually seemed halfway intelligent, he might lose some of his hardcore voters, but also better his odds of being last righty standing because the left would immediately start talking about him as if he were the biggest threat.
