• Ethicists Peeved at Use of Term Pet

I don't call my animals "pet", I call them by their name. I thought most people did that? I have never been to a house where someone calls for their dog by saying "Come here, pet"
The point this article makes sense. While yes, I doubt an animal is going to give two shits what you call him, we really should be taking steps to prevent animal abuse, and overhaul how the justice system handles it. [most] Animals are far from unfeeling, unthinking masses of flesh that are our pawns, and they should be treated as such. [editline]00[/editline] Come to think of it, I've never called any of my animals "pet". Either by their names, or when describing the animal in question it's typically "My cat, coconut", but never as pet....
I usually call my cat Trouble by his name, but that's usually because he's pissing in the corner when the litterpan is completely clean :v:
I suppose that's their pet peeve.
Yes, because using the word pet instead of companion reinforces a level of unequal respect because animals totally know how to understand human language. I can say a high pitched "WHOS A BITCH" to my dog and he'll wag his tail and run to the door. If that isn't understanding human language, I don't know what is.
"Pet" is a long-established term, and in many cases it's more accurate than companion. As long as I'm nice to my dog, he doesn't give a fuck what I say to him other than his name and "good boy." He is a companion to me, but I always just introduce him as my dog, not my pet or my companion. Same goes with my cats. This is kinda like when PETA tried to change the name of fish to 'sea kittens,' so people wouldn't want to eat them.
I'll treat my cat with more respect when it stops pissing on bookshelves.
I'll treat my cat with more respect when it stops pissing on bookshelves.
Is the litter pan clean :v:?
in the sense that it belittles them and our relations with them
:what:
ITT: tons of 12yr olds who judge people with PhD's
Maybe you should consider yourself a "human caregiver" instead...Perhaps they should be "companion animals," not just "pets."
Fuck off.
ITT: tons of 12yr olds who judge people with PhD's
PhD's in Theology, whooptiefuckindoo.
So, we've spent the past thousands of years scavenging for our food, building great empires, taking over mass amounts of land and country, settling on a new land, and for what? Oh, they're not pets, they're "Companion Animals" Fuck off. We've been calling them pets for years now, not like it makes a fucking difference. Fido isn't going to know the difference between calling him a "Dickbite Fuckstick" and "Fido" as long as your tone is happy and high pitched
I don't think my cats give a shit what I call them. 'Pet' is a much friendlier word than 'companion animal'.
Hmm no. Anyways, i hate calling 'my' cats mine, they live with me, i provide them shelter food, love, i don't claim "ownership", to be honest, when i was younger i was like MEOW IS MINE, but as a mature i realize that every living thing should be treated with as much respect as i treat other people and myself. Even though animals -well fuck, we are animals- Whatever, it's really childish to claim another living thing ours, It's exactly the same mindset that white people enslaved black people tbh
PhD's in Theology, whooptiefuckindoo.
Theologians typically study in different areas as well, especially ethics and philosophy. In a Theology class, if you're not learning Church History, then more than half of your class is going to be spent debating ethical issues of all sorts.
You're a dimwit if you honestly think that any animal that is not capable of sapient speech is somehow of less worth than you. Dogs and almost every other animal are capable of both verbal and non-verbal communication. Humans are in many ways inferior to other animals. Take away our tools and contraptions and we are completely defenseless.
Then we'd make new tools. It's part of our survival. It's like saying a bear is worthless because if you take away anything that makes it deadly or useful, it would die.

Why would you want to get rid of "eat like a pig"? It isn't slander or anything; pigs got singled out in this regard for a reason. My dad had a pet Pot Bellied Pig back when I was a wee lad, and I can say with certainty that damn near every trope about pigs and food is true. It used to camp out in the kitchen, for the express purpose of bumrushing the fridge if anyone opened it. The only reason it wouldn't go after food someone was actively eating was because people rarely held things low enough for it to snatch them. If I wasn't careful it'd eat my toys before I could do anything about it; in some cases while I was still playing with them. I still have no idea how it managed to pass that top without a hitch...
I call my cat by his name. When they ask me "Who's Ian?" I say "MAH KITTUH KAHT :333"
Ouch I just cringed reading your post.

[editline]11th May 2011[/editline]
haha the status quo argument
I actually have a question, what benefit comes from this? Changing it from pet to companion? IS there a clear cut benefit or is this just to clear our conscious of the fact that we bred theses creatures to makes us feel happy and for giggles.
I think they want to change the general mindset as DrBreen said
But majority of people already view their pets as companions and part of the family, and things like
The foreword in the peer-reviewed academic publication, which was first published last month, even suggests getting rid of terms like "critters," "beasts" and "wild animals," along with phrases such as "drunk as a skunk" and "eat like a pig."
are just absurdly gratuitous and inane political correctness.
This has got to be the dumbest shit I've heard this month. I already treat my PETS right. Fuck off with your needless attempts at trying to make daily life more difficult, it wont stop animal abuse.
I think they want to change the general mindset as DrBreen said
But hasn't the general mindset already changed? Is this just asking a change that has already occurred?
They're not yours, they just live with you that's the point of the thread, ownership claiming has to go (point of thread k thnx)
No, that's retarded.
No, that's retarded.
How could it possibly be retarded
They're not yours, they just live with you that's the point of the thread, ownership claiming has to go (point of thread k thnx)
I bought their parents, I let them have the babies, I raised them, I feed them. They're a part of my family, the pet part. Just like a child is a child. A pet is a pet.
How about the fact they are sub-human animals with no other purpose then to please our boredom and old ladies loneliness. Stop making them something they are not. They are animals we have bred so far into worthlessness to make them safe and 'cute" to preform a worthless task. They are not people. They are not the same as a person. We should not treat them as such.
pff speak for your own pets
