One thing I've noticed with people is that they act like children whenever it comes to their pets. I was watching a show about Alaskan policemen the other day, this one guy had an attack dog 'Muskey' or some shit and constantly was like "Muskey-wuskie come here, oohhh your so cute" in a really ridiculous voice.

Pets are substitutes for kids.

The same features that make human babies cause that reaction can be found in the babies of lots of animals, and domesticated animals evolved to retain more of those features into adulthood.

Can't stand babies, but kittens I go d'aaw for.

And you know what's crazy? Adult animals, even predatory animals, have been known to 'adopt' abandoned young of other species, if there's plenty of other food to take care of their own needs and the needs of their families.
You're a dimwit if you honestly think that any animal that is not capable of sapient speech is somehow of less worth than you. Dogs and almost every other animal are capable of both verbal and non-verbal communication.
Humans are in many ways inferior to other animals. Take away our tools and contraptions and we are completely defenseless.
You cannot be serious, Humans are superior to all other animals. If animals can do what the hell they want to other animals we can do the same bloody thing. That's why we are at the top, the most intelligent animals on earth, bloodthirsty and ruthless. Human survival is greater than theirs.

name one way we are better than polar bears
exactly, case closed, we should all surrender to our polar bear masters

We're smarter than other animals, We aren't even the strongest primates.
I'd like to see you go hand to hand combat with a leopard. Good luck with that.
The foreword in the peer-reviewed academic publication, which was first published last month, even suggests getting rid of terms like "critters," "beasts" and "wild animals," along with phrases such as "drunk as a skunk" and "eat like a pig."
They seem to be confusing "people having negative attitudes towards animals" and "these words are demeaning". I mean, if you stop calling them "critters", "beasts" and "wild animals", you'll just have to use another term to describe untamed animals, and then that word will become derogatory.
It's like when people try and avoid insulting developmentally disabled people. The scientific word used to be "idiot", but then that became insulting so we switched to "retarded" and when that became insulting we tried "special", only now people sometimes call stupid people "a bit special" (or some similar term) which means we're having to change to "developmentally disabled".
It's the euphemism treadmill, trying to change the words we use to describe something will not get rid of the negative connotations, it'll just transfer them to another word.
Animals are to be eaten, not loved.
When the testing is over you must dispose of your companion animal.

theology is a centuries old school of thought and deals with moral and social issues on the same level of complexity as any sort of secular philosophy
This is beyond silly.

Raw strength doesn't mean shit, we dominate other animals because we can outsmart them and at this point they are just interesting things instead of threats. For the article, we own animals, they aren't our equals and they don't even realize the concept of that. This is just inane political correctness.

Judging people based on their career choice?
career choices are made for judging, shut the fuck up
theology is a centuries old school of thought and deals with moral and social issues on the same level of complexity as any sort of secular philosophy
Yeah but it deals with them from an irrational basis.
Animals have feelings, but they aren't aware of our vocabulary.
I don't think I've ever used the term pet when talking about our family's dogs. Just their names. Abby, Tilly, and Puppy. Originally Puppy's name was Stupid, don't remember what it did to get that one.

Taking away an animals primary method of defense makes it defenseless?
WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT.

you look tasty

Are you capable of critical thought?
A human unassisted by tools is defenseless. Tools are not apart of a human. If you give a scrawny kid a machine gun and put him up against a wrestler, who is stronger? The wrestler.
No, you bought it and it's your possession whether living or not. Obviously that doesn't entitle you to abuse a living animal though.
[editline]11th May 2011[/editline]
This whole notion is absurd.
They're a part of my family, the pet part.

A pet is a pet.
Except that legally you don't "own" a child.
Yeah but it deals with them from an irrational basis.
just because you think religion is irrational doesn't invalidate hundreds of years of thought and study
you don't even have to be religious to be a theologian as 'theology' includes the study of the effects and nature of religion and as such can be studied from a secular perspective
Are you capable of critical thought?

Our intelligence is our primary adaptation, and our ability to make and use complex tools is a natural extension of that adaptation. This obviously more than makes up for the fact that we got the shit end of the stick in the evolutionary lottery when it comes to all other aspects because we dominate the world. Your example of the kid and the wrestler doesn't hold water practically. The wrestler is physically stronger, yes, but so long as the kid knows how to use the machine gun and is strong enough to hold it and handle the recoil, guess who's going to win in a fight to the death?

We evolved out of any sort of useful natural defenses due to our use of manufactured defenses that were superior to any natural defense.
So in effect tools ARE our natural defenses.
I would like to PET my PET dog and PET cat.
Wel, i guess you could say its their pet hate.

I have a brother.
He is MY brother.
Does that mean that I own my brother?
It was okay when they replaced "nigger" with "african-american".
It was not okay when they wanted to replace "mother" and "father" with just "parent".
But getting rid of the words "animal", "critter", and "pet" is just over the line.
Seriously, what the fuck is up with people?
At this rate we're going to refer to everything as "object 2315".
