You haven't been paying attention to the game in the past couple of weeks, have you? There's some kind of big update on its way in a little less than seven hours.
I seriously doubt Linux is going to catch on.
It probably will though. How long it will take for it to happen is a matter of debate and conjecture though.
Open Source in general has such a massive potential for development speed and rate of innovation, so unless OSX and Windows release open source at some point they are eventually going to be overtaken, at least at the technological level, by linux-based operating systems. It's already happened in the mobile field, all android systems are linux-based and have open source licences, and can you guess what OS is winning the mobile race?
At that point in regards to operating systems for PCs and Macs, it's really just a matter of threshold until most people realize they are shooting themselves in the foot by paying money, or *more* money for a proprietary closed-circuit OS that is simply not as good.
It's kind of interesting from a sociology standpoint actually, there's large elements of social proofing and prestige at play in people choosing what operating system they use. Linux could be thousand times better and there would probably still be a sizable cult following for windows and OSX. It'll be interesting to watch the shift in the coming years.
People, especially programmers, should ditch this "consumer loyalty" garbage and throw their weight behind the most technologically expandable choice.
If linux becomes a legitimately better, or at least viable option for gaming I'm going to switch in a blink of an eye, to be honest Ubuntu already looks pretty spiffy as a workstation OS.

There's another update coming out that isn't community-driven though. The one with all the Moonbase stuff.

To be fair it might as well be that. The percentage of Linux gamers is insanely low.
Really depends on what you want from your pc. linux is much worse for gaming.
And in useability, and just looks in general.
Its great when you know what you're doing but I've had too many kernals break themselves because I screwed up somewhere in updating something and I had no idea.
I broke a fucking netbook doing it. Seriously, if you want Linux to catch on, you have to dumb down a lot of the basic things that make Mac/Windows look appitizing.
There's so much potential for Linux but for fuck's sake, we are the least use friendly group.

*For now*
This logic is rooted in a circular logical fallacy in the sense that "linux isn't used for games because it's not used for games," obviously the way to resolve this issue is start introducing games to linux, thus what the OP article is about.
Not going to be overnight though, that's a bullshit statement. Unless overnight means like 5-10 years

Except 20 is an order of magnitude, that low 1.1% turns into 22%, assuming Alienware's prediction comes true.
Don't see how people can still be stuck on the "linux is unusable" line, Installing Linux is easier than Windows these days and has been for some time.
Civilization V came out for Steam OS recently and I think there was only a couple of minor visual issues on some GPUs.
-snip automerge-
Well, by 20 or 30, anyway.

1.1% market share =/= portion of linux users who are linux gamers. So, take like, 5% of that 1.1% and you're probably closer to correct.

Uh, no, that's actually the monthly Steam Survey result.
If you want market share, look at Humble Indie Bundles, where Linux customers usually rack up good 20% as long as the games offered are Linux native (and often quite a bit even when they are not).
I seriously doubt Linux is going to catch on.
You are joking right? Look at the phone market and look at servers google/facebook/youtube all use linux. Android is a prime example how Linux is awesome and really flexible it wont happen over a year but it sure will catch on.

The hardware survey is not really transparent, but it gives a ballpark %.
This would be amazing, Windows is slow, bloated, and beyond garbage. The only reason anybody uses windows (on facepunch) is because of the massive game support.
I use Windows when not coding because I find it a better general computing environment out of the box. Argue with me all day but the UI in 8.1 works very well and I haven't found anything quite like it on Linux. People have personal preferences, don't be a dick and generalize because you disagree with somebody's view.
Don't see how people can still be stuck on the "linux is unusable" line, Installing Linux is easier than Windows these days and has been for some time.
I don't know how you're benchmarking either. Both are extremely easy if you have any idea what you're doing.
Well, if their (insane) prediction came true, over a third of Steam users would be on SteamOS/Linux.
[editline]17th June 2014[/editline]
Well, currently, 500 out of more than 3000 games on Steam have Linux/SteamOS support, so about one sixth, and a lot more games than that which currently come out come with Linux support and the ratio of Linux titles is steadily and rapidly increasing.
It wouldn't surprise me if it made a thousand by Christmas.
Honestly, the big question isn't how many titles are running on linux, the bigger question is usually how many backbone titles do. Titles like call of duty really.

Oh sure lets look at Steam backbone titles by simply looking at the games currently played the most on Steam right now

I said this last week and nobody listened.
Of the top 10 games been played right now, Only Arma 3, Skyrim, and CS:GO don't support linux.
I'm going to just go ahead and assume we'll see GS:GO appear on linux before the launch of the steam machines, so no, no quite another wiiu.

I tried most things in my library I could bother to install
The only things in my library that even supported Linux were Source games and some 2D games
The only thing that actually ran properly was VVVVVV, Source games had ridiculous input lag and horrid performance (I was running the opensource AMD drivers though, so you cant entirely blame them for that, the proprietary ones are nigh-impossible to install)
You have Civ V in your games list, and that just got ported over to Linux (and at the same settings seems to perform a fair bit better than it did in Windows for me).
steambox support just means more support for OS X to me now. i just hope the CS:GO linux port isn't as terrible as it is on here
i give up on linux for daily use
[editline]18th June 2014[/editline]
though if adobe supported linux i could probably use it comfortably

call of duty already has OS X versions regardless of whether or not they're wine wrappers (i don't actually know that, but aspyr make good ports). activision are clearly up to supporting other platforms so that could happen some day
I imagine any companies that publish on OS X via Aspyr have a high(er) chance now that they handle Linux as well.
I just need visual studio in Linux and I'll be fine.
