Could've been expected from car manufacturer with a vagina as a logo.
also it looks like this
It's a fucking battery, what's stopping people from replacing it or directly removing the drm circuitry?
also it looks like this
Exactly.
It's a fucking battery, what's stopping people from replacing it or directly removing the drm circuitry?
3rd party shops where I live refuse to work on electrics because it apparently invalidates the warranty. So I imagine the dealer would just refuse to service it if the DRM circuits are compromised.
DRM? Uncrackable? Maybe in an alternate universe where everyone follows all the rules and plays nice, but there's no way in hell that's going to fly in this one.
Well you could be right, but this is different from software DRM in that only people who purchase the car could get access to work with it, and it is possible that the mere notion of working at the battery will fuck you over (void warranty or something), making the # of people who are working to crack it very small.
also it looks like this
I swear, large car manufacturers must try to make electric cars as undesirable to normal people as possible.
I swear, large car manufacturers must try to make electric cars as undesirable to normal people as possible.
No, it's just that large car manufacturers have really fucking terrible designers lately
This company will get sued to hell and back if this causes an accident.
"Hang on, bro, I'm rooting my car battery"
I swear, large car manufacturers must try to make electric cars as undesirable to normal people as possible.
Except tesla, they actually makes cars that looks nice and is something I could see myself driving.
also it looks like this
That's even uglier than Walter White's Pontiac Aztek.
That's even uglier than Walter White's Pontiac Aztek.
Still not as ugly as the multipla
Except tesla, they actually makes cars that looks nice and is something I could see myself driving.
Well Tesla is different than standard car companies. [editline]14th November 2013[/editline]
Still not as ugly as the multipla
I had to look that up and I hope that designer got fired.
Still not as ugly as the multipla

That's even uglier than Walter White's Pontiac Aztek.
I honestly don't understand who would draw a car like these and think "yeah, this is a great car, I would totally drive this everyday"
Give it a week, it'll get cracked.
If you crack the battery it'll catch fire though.
Can't wait for the automotive equivalent of HDCP handshake failure. I bet Jeremy Clarkson broke out the good brandy when he heard about this. Once he'd picked himself up off the floor from where he'd been laughing helplessly.
You realize that under the agreement, you sign a contract, right guys? It's not like cracking a game or movie and spreading it online so others can download it anonymously. If they realize that you tampered with your battery and stopped paying the monthly cost, they can just ring you up and either force you to pay or repossess the battery. Edit: Also, there are many things that are hacker friendly and that encourage you to tinker around with them. A car battery is not one of those things
Muh automerge. Damn.
To the user, how is this any different from renting/leasing a car? You pay a certain amount for continuous use, and if you don't pay you lose the use of the car.
I'm also going to try being devil's avocado: batteries have a limited lifespan, the monthly fee probably works out such that you always have a fresh battery ie when it degrades in 4 years and you need it replaced, that is already paid for by the rental fee
you wouldn't download a battery for your car...
oh hey it's this incredibly original post found in every thread that mentions DRM
And they didn't think for a millisecond that Tesla would have an even greater advantage over them in the electric car market because of this?
Then they'd blame car pirates.
also it looks like this
looks nice

Is that necessary for some reason? Do we actually need someone to defend a stupid idea?

A car battery is not one of those things
Its a goddamn electric car, they can effectively shut down your car if you don't pay some monthly fee. The beef here is they hold ultimate control of your vehicle, its no longer yours. Its a damn Apple car at this point.
Well to be fair, Tesla data logs information from your car, but they ask for consent first.
Well to be fair, Tesla data logs information from your car, but they ask for consent first.
Plus they don't hold the battery hostage.
Wait, this is an article(Boing boing), that quotes another newspaper(Der Spiegel) that quotes....a post on some forum? article translated from Der Spiegel says this :
On a forum for electric cars will discharge for weeks, the anger over the carmaker Renault as a shorted battery. Reason of the rebellion: a passage from the lease for the battery of Zoe . It says that the manufacturer reserves in case of default, "triggering a lock of recharging the propulsion battery." In other words, account empty, empty battery.
This could be a big steaming pile of bullshit for all we know, some guys idea of a laugh. I doubt this has any validity whatsoever :v:
Yeah, because that'll make your cars more affordable.
