I like how nearly every British person has a story about gypsies
Probably cause they travel around a lot, unlike this famously stationary group.
Generally if you use faggot as an insult you're being homophobic, yes.
If I called someone I didn't like a nigger I'd be racist even if they weren't black.
Words change meaning over time, I would say faggot has lost it's homophobic origin for the most part were I live, as it is usually used to describe people who are weak rather than gay people. People give words different meanings sometimes, to assume that whenever people use words like faggot and gypsy are meaning it literally is ridiculous.
The best part about the whole "RACIST" argument was that all the people they interviewed on BBC were British through and through and figured it'd be a real lark not to pay taxes.
people still think this?
Yeah some of us don't think it's okay to make words like faggot and nigger acceptable in daily vernacular
He wanted the money to move the camp, read the rest of the article.
It isn't cheap to move that many people.
why should the council have to pay to move people that were fucking there illegally in the first place
they should foot the bill, not the taxpayer

How many people on the first few pages would make a distinction between Romanies and the people they say they hate though
They'd see the wikipedia article for Romanies and think "oh yeah gypsies, hate those guys"

well he obviously wasn't given the money now was he
giving them 6 million would be absurd
Yeah some of us don't think it's okay to make words like faggot and nigger acceptable in daily vernacular
It's still used as an insult, what do you see so much worse about insulting homosexuals instead of insulting people who piss everyone off?
Are you prejudice against dickheads?
You realize that's a fairly okay thing to say right
Had everyone said it from the beginning there wouldn't be any bans or a shitstorm
The only thing even slightly racist here is the wording
The actual actions that have taken place were still entirely justified and you're still trying to argue that because of the semantics used by forum users discussing this event, the event itself was uncalled for and unjustified

Because we don't need to. British people knew what we were talking about you just kicked up a fuss over a language barrier.
Yeah some of us don't think it's okay to make words like faggot and nigger acceptable in daily vernacular
you must live in some kind of backwater because where I live the word "faggot" is used in a homophobic context about as often as the word "gay" is used to mean "happy"
He wanted the money to move the camp, read the rest of the article.
It isn't cheap to move that many people.
But why should the council, and ergo the local community, pay to move half the families who weren't even supposed to be living there in the first place?
Generally if you use faggot as an insult you're being homophobic, yes.
this doesn't seem completely true
let's take the GMF, almost every other word is faggot but nobody bats an eyelid because everyone there can (should be able to) take the craic
you must live in some kind of backwater because where I live the word "faggot" is used in a homophobic context about as often as the word "gay" is used to mean "happy"
why do you think faggot got to be a general insult in the first place? because when you're using it you're alluding the person to a homosexual
you must live in some kind of backwater because where I live the word "faggot" is used in a homophobic context about as often as the word "gay" is used to mean "happy"
Yeah, when my Welsh friend says that he's going for a fag, I don't think he's going to go and have gay sex.

Bullshit, I've heard people use the word Gypsy to describe Irish travellers as well. It's pretty much used as a word for travellers.

uhh
if you're going to use the GMF as an example of daily conversation you need to get your head checked
Yeah some of us don't think it's okay to make words like faggot and nigger acceptable in daily vernacular
My gay friends say "fag" regularly, I guess that means they hate themselves
Seeing as they derive from the Romani people, I'd say that it qualifies as a race.
You have to be born in to a Gypsy family to be a Gyspy.
Bullshit, I've heard people use the word Gypsy to describe Irish travellers as well. It's pretty much used as a word for travellers.
doesn't change the fact that a large portion of this camp WAS Romanies
[editline]19th October 2011[/editline]
My gay friends say "fag" regularly, I guess that means they hate themselves
there's a difference based on who uses it
why do you think faggot got to be a general insult in the first place? because when you're using it you're alluding the person to a homosexual
The word faggot used to mean a bundle of sticks, and yet I never hear anyone use it in that context. People don't always use words for their actual definition.
there's a difference based on who uses it
just like black people can say "nigger" and it isn't racist, right?
hypocrite.
there's a difference based on who uses it
Right so if I say I'm off to get a fag, because I'm a heterosexual male I'm automatically going to lynch a homosexual?
Nah, I might just be going to smoke. If I smoked, at least.
The word faggot used to mean a bundle of sticks, and yet I never hear anyone use it in that context. People don't always use words for their actual definition.
People should be aware of the words they're using and the possible implications of using it.
doesn't change the fact that a large portion of this camp WAS Romanies
No, they were pretty much the minority.
there's a difference based on who uses it
how
Right so if I say I'm off out for a fag, because I'm a heterosexual male I'm automatically going to lynch a homosexual?
Nah, I might just be going to smoke. If I smoked, at least.
You aren't using it offensively as an insult though, it's not the same
People should be aware of the words they're using and the possible implications of using it.
people should be aware that words may mean something else in locations that are not their own, too
but they don't and then they start shitstorms over it
how
go up to a black guy and say "hey nigga" and you'll get a practical demonstration in why it's different
You aren't using it offensively as an insult though, it's not the same
I thought the context of the word didn't matter, it's still offensive
how

why do you think faggot got to be a general insult in the first place? because when you're using it you're alluding the person to a homosexual
why do you think "hooligan" got to be a general insult in the first place? because when you're using it you're alluding the person to be irish
yeah you're full of shit, go away
