I think another thing that influences pirating is the Community and how close the developers are with them.
Valve is a good example, The devs stay close to the community and in return, The community grows and makes you miss out on the chance to get involved with the community...
While say, EA, They make a game then act like they just flushed a shit down the toilet, People buy the game and find bugs and glitches that will take years before they release a patch and just bad overall storyline and play, Nobody really wants to be in a community like that, Making more see a reason to pirate from them as they are not missing out on anything.
I think the only level of DRM should be enough to keep you from just giving your disc to friends for you ALL to have it.
really, if you dont mind the online part, steam is the best DRM
most of the singleplayer games I've bought are cracked because DRM is obtrusive as fuck

To be fair i think that changes depending on their branches, they have separate studios working under their production company. BFBC2 didn't seem like a flushed turd and actually had some quick fixes to fix pretty harmful exploits early on, if you remember (or if anyone who played it remembers).
There's some game studios under their label that do good, others that don't. Valve I'm fairly sure doesn't have any quasi-independent studios under it, i might be wrong about that.

It's also worth noting i do this also but mostly to get around the 'packed' EXE when i want to write a trainer for a single player game like those that used SecuROM.
Most people also aren't aware of it but SecuROM prevents you from running certain applications, not just daemon tools, things like IDA as well. That's a real inconvenience to somebody who uses it for practical purposes :saddowns:

turtle rock
For instance, I won't buy games that require EA's download manager to update/function

I think CD-keys worked fine, and if companies want to kill second-hand sales alright, slap an additional $10 "online activation" code in the case and that's it. I can understand why EA does the project ten dollar thing, and it's totally reasonable.

Which is funny since Daemon Tools (and other programs) have addons that make them undetectable by SecuRom. SecuRom hasn't whined about DT, well, ever.
Some people will always pirate the game. One can't really say what started the "Piracy > DRM > More Piracy > More DRM"-cycle started, but I think it's a bit dumb to justify DRM as a pure survival strategy. The music industry has seen piracy for half a century, they're not falling apart because of it.
-snip i'm wrong-
Refreshing to hear that we're not the only ones who think like this.
It drove me to piracy. I bought Dragon Age Ultimate Edition on steam and all the DLC is locked behind piles and piles of shitty DRM. I LEGALLY BOUGHT THE GAME and I can't play it because the whole system is so bugged out that I don't even see it in the content box. And I'm NOT the only one who had this problem. Meanwhile if I pirate it, then I get all that content perfectly fine.
For instance, I won't buy games that require EA's download manager to update/function
I didn't know those games existed
whats drm?
whats drm?
It's an acronym for Digital Rights Management, being a prettier word for anti piracy metods.
While I am sure bad DRM has forced people to pirate games, I still think one of the leading reasons of game piracy is just people wanting free stuff.
It really annoys me when pirates actually try to justify pirating. I'd much rather prefer them to say "Pirating is wrong but I do it anyways."
getting past the drm is nothing short of following directions. i've never had a problem with any drm i've dealt with.
if it's not working, you've done something wrong.

i'm pretty sure not having money drives players to piracy. i don't think anyone here that had the money for a game would get the pirated copy over the legitimate version.

I do it because the pirated product is better than the paid one. No drm, no shit cutscenes, no nothing. All that for free. What do I get when I pay 60$? I get frustration and shit in my food
If only EA didn't shut down pandemic studios. I buy games to support the devs behind them. Not to support the publisher that kills them.

Be honest here. You don't even notice that the DRM is there unless it's that Ubisoft DRM I heard of when you have to be online at all times when you play it, but I haven't experienced that first hand, so I can't make any fair judgments on that.
And are 10 second NVIDIA THE WAY IT'S MEAN TO BE PLAYED ads that big of a deal to you?
All you are doing is listing things that aren't even the game itself, which apparently interests you enough that you should buy it.
Just admit that you are pirating because you are cheap.

long intros are more fun when the game crashes very often.

Maybe piracy wouldn't be as big of a problem if companies incentivized people to pay for their services.
As it stands there is no incentive over piracy except a plastic box and physical disk, that's what perpetuates piracy.
Like it or not, pirates are their competitors. I'm not going to advocate the virtues of getting something for nothing, but that's life. They need to stop punishing consumers for buying their products by bogging them down with restrictions and start giving them incentives to buy their products. Period.
The government assisting them in this only allows for them to perpetuate the system of disappointment.

I think they were trying this with the portal 2 robot skins that can probably be accessed via console command
I really don't want to install Bioshock again because the last time I did they installed a file that I couldn't delete, even after uninstalling. I even went into linux and couldn't get rid of it. Pissed me off so much.

So the game is responsible for your bad hardware?

The point is that if I pay, I am treated like dirt. If I am a criminal, my product treats me like a person.
So in simple I pay so people can laugh at me.

If you pay you get the game that you payed for that developers slaved away on doing really tedious work on making a fun game for people to enjoy.
Also in the long term you are also paying for the developers to keep their jobs and a possible sequel of the game you bought.
