PSN Users Reporting Hundreds of Dollars Stolen From Them
what can they do with a mac address? well they are globally unique but changeable. let's say... the look up one of the obtained mac addies... hmmm this person happens to be near by "associate so and so" ... they can shuffle their little jerk butts over and start sniffing.
there are some people that do that.. even if it is a hassle and a pain in the butt...
btw you would be surprised what companies keep stored...hell look at apple...they keep track of everywhere their users go.. you would think it be beneath sony to do the same?
And do what exactly? If you're not an idiot you'll have decent security on your router and you might even have some on anything that's using wireless.
Can we, or can we not?
I'd like to know if there's a way to change our PSN passwords instead of being rated dumb.

Yea just log in to psn and change it.
I feel Sony flopped on their security precautions, did they even encrypt ANYTHING?

did you miss the part where the psn is down
you know, one of the main points of the thread
why are you even in here
Glad I got away from console gaming crap a decade ago.
No suspicious transactions on my end.

They can't make transactions on everybody's account at the same time.
OK, so then we CANNOT change our passwords until the PSN is back up?
There is forum activity of people using their accounts on Sony's forums and I am just confused.
A definitive answer is greatly appreciated.

Also, understand that the CC's aren't usually used immediately, they're usually sold off or traded on illegal markets.

sarcasm doesn't translate well through text

If those hackers were PC gamers, they could have leaked information about unannounced games :V

Or just leaked Valve customers information instead.
"Those hackers" aren't who you're imagining them as.

That's your bank card, those auths are for bank to bank transfers, they do not work the same way as credit cards and are usually not accepted for online purchases unless you link it to a service such as paypal.
Well, since Sony even sent credit card details as plain text during transactions, it wasn't hard to guess that their other security measures would be poor too. And even if they couldn't have kept hackers out of the console, they could have kept the information in the PSN safe.

Exactly, it's a very disappointing situation.

You mean on the sending CC data? That was all over the news due to a CFW exposing it or something to that nature.

I think he's referring to a token which generates a password based on an algorithm. Something like this:
