===================================
Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011,
certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account
information was compromised in connection with an illegal and
unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this
intrusion, we have:
1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a
full and complete investigation into what happened; and
3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our
network infrastructure by rebuilding our system to provide you
with greater protection of your personal information.
We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill
as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly
and efficiently as practicable.
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident,
we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following
information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province,
zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation
Network/Qriocity password, login, password security answers, and handle/PSN
online ID. It is also possible that your profile data may have been obtained,
including purchase history and billing address (city, state/province, zip
or postal code). If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent,
the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained.
While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time,
we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card
data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution
we are advising that your credit card number (excluding security code) and
expiration date may also have been obtained.
For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email,
telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive
information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email,
asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification
or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you
are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the
entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are
fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your
password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity
user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we
strongly recommend that you change them as well.
To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss,
we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements
and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.
We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of
this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working
around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as
possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will
continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to
protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and
secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority.
Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.
Sincerely,
Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment
Email above,
Estimated time PSN will be back up?
Estimated time PSN will be back up?
"within a week"
Good thing PSN denied my credit information about a week ago for some reason, when I was trying to make a purchase on the PSP.
That's not a fake email address, they've been using that one for their Store updates for awhile now.
And that email is basically what their FAQ says on their website anyway.
It totally is a bullshit email address, but it keeps mentioning that I'm protected under Massachusetts law. I live in Illinois.
Also there's this little number right here:
For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email,

Then later on it asks for those exact details.
Email above,
What was the email address that sent you that?
For starters, we don't even know yet who's behind this, let alone if they're connected to the OtherOS bollocks. That's getting less likely anyway with this whole credit card scheme that's going on.
Besides, even if they were, this is completely unjustified, no matter how you put it. Being pissed off about it, fine. Doing something of this proportion crosses several lines however and in no way helps your case.
Yep, I agree. However, I believe the whole point here--unless I'm mistaken--is to piss off and embarrass Sony in the most unimaginable way possible, and I believe they (whoever is behind all this) succeeded...
Of course, that doesn't give them the right to actually steal from people who has absolutely nothing to do with Sony in the first place (that is, if the same people who got ahold of all the CC data is the same stealing the money from the accounts).
All in all, a really, really embarrassing time for Sony execs. Looking forward to see what's going to be the outcome of this shitstorm... and how many heads will roll because of this fuckup.
Huh, seems like they only got something on my US-account(which I only use to download demo's). I got that scam-mail on my alternate gmail account, which is linked to my US account.
Should I be glad my PSN account is linked to a now-deleted e-mail address?
Depends on wether there where any cc info on that account.
from what I can tell via old emails about PSN wallet funding only my old debit card was used and that bad boy already expired, have I gotten off lightly?
They're saying it's impossible for the hackers to have gotten all the credit card info. Read the article http://www.gamespot.com/news/6310549.html?tag=latestheadlines%3Btitle%3B1
If that's true then the FPers who claimed that they got something taken are a bunch of douchebags.
from what I can tell via old emails about PSN wallet funding only my old debit card was used and that bad boy already expired, have I gotten off lightly?
I have heard of MS taking money for xbl off of expired cc's, so I don't know.
I have heard of MS taking money for xbl off of expired cc's, so I don't know.
If you heard that, it's probably false, because you're an 11'er, MS won't do such things and because that's just plain illegal.
I MAY have used my debit card to buy an old PS1 classic for my PSP, and I have no clue which of my many variations of the same password I used is the one I used for PSN, so I don't know which websites I should change my password for. However, I just checked my bank info and I have had no money stolen. Of course, it could just be a matter of time, so I'll order a new debit card anyways...
Wow, I was almost going to buy something on the psn before all of this happened. Really glad I didn't.
Though, I have close friends who buy alot of stuff on it. I really hope everything works out for everyone in the end.:smith:
When Sony's stocks drop really low, I shall buy Sony!

And completely possible!

The whole point of a card being expired is that it doesn't work
how can they take money off it?

Try blocking packets of a malicious attack based on packet content on a windows server without going through a massively overcomplicated installation of some vague and unknown firewall software.

Oh wait, you can't.
Linux > Windows for almost everything server related. Desktop linux isn't bad either (Though I'll stick with Windows for that.)

Linux is amazing, we all know this.

You're kind of dumb.
I used my old PS3 as a computer (Ubuntu) when OtherOS was still around.

Honestly, try doing it on Linux
I like Linux alot, but compiling everything from source is dicks, you need to be a fucking rocket scientist to find out what the undocumented error you keep getting means
My only experiace with it:
"Okey im just gonna compile this with the included instructions, should be fine"
*Runs make as instructions says*
"Error 0x12345678"
*One google search later*
*No results*
"Fuck this shit"

Don't let our fearless leader hear you say that.

Most distros these days have a package manager of some form.

You do realize that the only reason the PS3 was cracked was because the OtherOS feature was removed?
You do have to give Sony some props. Their console was the last to be hacked this generation, their network was also the last, even if it was the biggest clusterfuck of dumb ever. They did something right to have lasted this long without a major security breach.
Only because they appeased the people who have the skillset/determination to break past the hardware level so that others were able to analyze the rest of the system. I don't know how you can say the network lasted the longest since the console has only recently been open so that it could be analyzed further.

Right. That doesn't mean it didn't last the longest. The fact it took that long to even crack the console itself to a usable degree is something noteworthy.

The PS3 was cracked because someone wanted it cracked. OtherOS was just a coincidence and as far as I know, people were taking shots at PS3 before anyone even mentioned OtherOS. No matter what, there will always be someone out there smarter and more skilled than the one's who implement the security.
The console needs to be hacked to see how it interacts with the network. After the hackers know how they communicate with one another, it's probably easy to figure out the rest. PS3 was the last console to get hacked, therefore the network lasted the longest.
Not cool any more.
