Why the hell, anyways, does this remind me of Phil Fish and other suicidal indie game devs? It's mostly like the most popular and common indies that are in the industry are like melancholic psychopathic hipsters.
What? Notch never struck me as a melancholic psychopathic hipster.
Even Notch seems to not enjoy it even a bit, but whatevs.
It was notch's idea. That post is from 2 years ago.
Honestly I can not say anything until we see Mojang's next game, I will assume for 2.5 Billion dollars though Microsoft is going to make them make safe games, hopefully they don't end up like Rare.
Waiting for a change.org petition to come up and do FA :v:
What?
What? Notch never struck me as a melancholic psychopathic hipster.
No thats because he vacations enough that he doesn't go crazy.
Here's notch's blog.
I don’t see myself as a real game developer. I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world. Minecraft certainly became a huge hit, and people are telling me it’s changed games. I never meant for it to do either. It’s certainly flattering, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.
A relatively long time ago, I decided to step down from Minecraft development. Jens was the perfect person to take over leading it, and I wanted to try to do new things. At first, I failed by trying to make something big again, but since I decided to just stick to small prototypes and interesting challenges, I’ve had so much fun with work. I wasn’t exactly sure how I fit into Mojang where people did actual work, but since people said I was important for the culture, I stayed.
I was at home with a bad cold a couple of weeks ago when the internet exploded with hate against me over some kind of EULA situation that I had nothing to do with. I was confused. I didn’t understand. I tweeted this in frustration. Later on, I watched the This is Phil Fish video on YouTube and started to realize I didn’t have the connection to my fans I thought I had. I’ve become a symbol. I don’t want to be a symbol, responsible for something huge that I don’t understand, that I don’t want to work on, that keeps coming back to me. I’m not an entrepreneur. I’m not a CEO. I’m a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.
As soon as this deal is finalized, I will leave Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares and small web experiments. If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I’ll probably abandon it immediately.
Considering the public image of me already is a bit skewed, I don’t expect to get away from negative comments by doing this, but at least now I won’t feel a responsibility to read them.
I’m aware this goes against a lot of what I’ve said in public. I have no good response to that. I’m also aware a lot of you were using me as a symbol of some perceived struggle. I’m not. I’m a person, and I’m right there struggling with you.
I love you. All of you. Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become, but there are too many of you, and I can’t be responsible for something this big. In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it’s belonged to all of you for a long time, and that will never change.
It’s not about the money. It’s about my sanity.

So according to this article Notch has a 71% stake in Mojang. The article quotes the sale at 2 billion (it's from the 10th of September) so considering it's 2.5, that means notch gets 1.775 billion. Before tax.
In that case not worth it pfft
Well, let's hope they do something cool with it, I guess. This seems like a pretty strange purchase, though.
Clearly they are just in it for the Scrolls money.
What? Notch never struck me as a melancholic psychopathic hipster.
I don't know, I just assumed Notch had real bad depression problems affecting what remained of his Minecraft/Mojang career. The problem is, the emotional doodoo is getting too popular amongst some indie devs. And I don't mean EVERY indie dev, I know perfectly it's not the case of many indie devs, but emotional/psychological problems shouldn't really be part of the PR of these devs.
Maybe EA/Activision/etc are dipshits, but they don't go and act like suicidal drama queens, because at least they got counselors who control that stuff. Even EA doesn't censor by copyright strikes on YouTube the reviews made by famous youtubers, because they have advisors that tell them not to do this shit.
The main problem with indie devs is that they have so many liberties in PR they get out of control. If Mojang/Phil Fish/the developers of Island Light/etc had advisors to tell them what not to do, they wouldn't do this crap, and therefore they would do better business. But sad thing is, most indies can't afford advisors much.
notch plis give me $5
I remember playing from the start, hosting my own community the great times and the wonder that it was all constructed around such a simple game mechanic and design. It was kind of like a classic indie success story at first but just fizzled out so fast.
Holy shit this is like half of what the creator of IKEA is worth. This is insane.
Here's notch's blog.
It probably still is partially about money, but I see what would convince him apart from that.
At least he's leaving on a good note. He's just not the right man for this kind of life, and he knows it, and he is being humble about it.
I mean, I'd do the same. Think about it, you get to do what you'd like to do anyway but instead of loosing money because of it, you get paid a sum that even if completly uninvested is more than enough for you, your children and your childrens children.
Complete rewrite when.
Alternatively, proper modding API when.
So how long until Microsoft does the Microsoft thing and remove modding? (Yes I know the article says otherwise)
Let's hope they really do listen to the community.
I think Microsoft would rather not fuck this up and they will listen to the community.
Have faith.
So, how likely is Microsoft to add a ton more programmers as opposed to a handful?
I think Microsoft would rather not fuck this up and they will listen to the community.

Microsoft listened like maniacs when the Xbox got bad press. I don't see them giving that up with this, especially considering it's a massive franchise.

Honestly I'm optimistic regarding this whole deal.
Let's hope they really do listen to the community.
The "listen to the community" crap would seem like a funny joke to the Miserable Suckers on top of the million-dollar building. But meh, maybe it's going to be the case.

Companies lie and change their minds. I haven't answered my own question.
I can see the news media people already.

Who is this Minecraft?
So I did some calculations and I hope I did them wrong
But if even only 10% of the money was given to Notch and his Mojang employees, that's enough money to give 50 employees at least 333,500 dollars each.
I really hope that Microsoft does the right thing for Minecraft. It's an almost false hope considering the crap that MS has done in the recent past but still.
i was wondering did minecraft ever had the mod api released?
i was wondering did minecraft ever had the mod api released?
The current idea is that MC had been patchwork for years and for 1.8 they rewrote a huge amount of code to make the eventual modkit setup easier.
Whatever happened to this?

What do you even do with $2.5 billion (or whatever it is after taxes/other shareholders)?
