Holy shit, I remember reading Notch's blog when he was writing about when they moved into their first office, some little box room with a plasma TV on the wall and a few computers scattered around and he was so happy.
And now he just sold it for 2.5Bn.
Time goes fast.
Microsoft explicitly state in their xbox.com post that the Playstation, iOS and Android versions aren't going away.
So... wait, I'm confused. If Microsoft isn't going to halt development for the PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android versions of Minecraft, then what was the point of this purchase? Considering Minecraft's development history, I don't really think any of the developers in the company are worth a damn, so why did Microsoft blow 2.5 billion on Mojang? Did Microsoft just waste 2.5 million dollars to say that they own a bunch of indie devs that lack any sort of focus or work ethic?

Huge payoff from the profits of the ported versions, not to mention all the money they make from licensed Minecraft junk. It's totally plausible that the game is going to get milked more than it already has been.

The IP is worth billions, not the game itself. Read: merchandising

also they are not only buying a game, but a generation.
No IP should ever be worth this much.
Minecraft certainly shouldn't be worth 2.5 billion. Maybe 2.5 million, but certainly not that much money. What a shitty purchase from Microsoft.
Is this just a "gut feeling" valuation estimation or do you have any rational behind "maybe 2.5 million".
Just the merchandizing license alone would be worth much more then 2.5 kk
I'll go even further- just selling limited rights allowing a fast food place to place a plastic mine craft toy in their happy meals for a 2 week span would be vastly more then 2.5 kk

How many times has Microsoft dipped into the Halo well? Minecraft is their new Halo. For now, they won't end support for the other platforms. Imagine the backlash if they did that! However, I wouldn't be surprised if future extensions and sequels are used as killer apps for MS products, from phones to desktops to consoles. That's why on that Mojang post you'll notice he says something like "Microsoft can't control what changes other companies make" in referring to the future. That's probably going to be MS's excuse for limiting support to other companies' products- they changed their OS/licensing/hardware and we can't be expected to develop an all new codebase for each one.
Sweet
This means I'll get Pocket Edition on my Windows phone finally

So? Microsoft is one of the richest companies on the planet, 2 billion is spare change to them and if they can get a big IP with spare change then why the fuck not.
So according to this article Notch has a 71% stake in Mojang. The article quotes the sale at 2 billion (it's from the 10th of September) so considering it's 2.5, that means notch gets 1.775 billion. Before tax.
I remember him saying that he had to pay 45% of every copy of Minecraft sold as government taxes (which probably means he has to pay 45% of his salary in taxes) so that would leave him at ~976 million after taxes, he'll be fine.

Microsoft recently realized that if they have their products on all platforms and keep them compelling everywhere, then they wind up making more money since anyone can buy their stuff no matter what platforms they use rather than just people on Windows/Xbox.
They seem to finally get that exclusivity isn't a good business tactic, and all of their products these days are available pretty much universally with non-Windows versions either just as or almost as good as Windows versions or are currently getting ports worked on.
i remember playing the web version way back in like fucking 2009 when nobody knew what the hell a minecraft was, and now this nigga is a billionaire
weird

There's a reason why you don't have a say in what Microsoft spends their money on.
Garry just made this post supporting Microsoft buying Mojang, honestly I agree with him. How about you guys?

Hit the nail on the head pretty much. It's better for Mojang to just sell rather than eventually go under from lack of interest, leaving everyone in a world of shit.
If they could actually work on Minecraft and make it better as opposed to adding worthless shit like horses and emeralds, i'd disagree and say they need to not sell, but that isn't happening.
I still wonder if this will affect any of the Minecraft modding stuff.
One of my friends has already stated he'll likely move on to either mod Terasology, or start his own project upon hearing this news.
I hope not because he's supposed to help me out with a mod of my own.

[Obligatory comment on how Minecraft has gone to shit recently]
What about those who bought alpha back in the day and was promised free expansions forever?
What about those who bought alpha back in the day and was promised free expansions forever?
What about it?
What about it?
Is that going to get scrapped?
Is that going to get scrapped?
think it's safe to say these "expansions" were integrated into the core game for everyone. games don't tend to update much after release other than bug fixes

I remember playing Minecraft after it had been in development for, like, a week. Still got an email from Notch where I asked him how the grass grows from when because I had spent the better part of a day trying to make the grass grow up onto a floating island.
Sort of reminds me of the guy on facepunch who made those really awesome priced servers, and turned out to be a pedo. I think it was brohost or something like that.
Don't ask me why, i have no clue, but i think it's because he got screwed over by that one dude there.
minecraft 2 as xbone exclusive to save the console

Fun fact: he worked for Oxeye for a while, which is the company that makes Cobalt, which Mojang publishes
That would be truly amazing, going from small video game designer, your game gaining a ton of attention, then selling your company and receiving 71% of the funds(especially that amount)..
Now hes able to fund whatever project he wants to try out for the future while living greatly, and can even help out other small game developers [or even random people that look like they need help]. (if he hasn't had the money to do any of this already).

Notch has said from day 1 of Minecraft being big that he hated it. It was great his game got recognized but he didn't want it to be a job, he wanted it to be a hobby. Microsoft sees a situation where they can get a still molten hot IP for relatively cheap (I can see them easily returning the investment they made), Notch no longer has to deal with stress that was quite seriously eating away at him, and judging by the dudes who handled the Xbox version of Minecraft, the game isn't gonna be hurt in any way.
This is nothing but a great situation that can secure a future for minecraft beyond a ramshackle team patchworking it, Notch can become a game hobbyist again (while also living comfortably off of money we will probably not make in our lives, all of the people in this thread combined), and Microsoft gets to do what they do best, make insane fucking cash on some great investments and choices, even if there are bumps on the road.
