The idea is that you have 12 people who have no reason to think one way or the other about a crime. That way only the defense and prosecution matters. It is the closest thing you can get to true neutrality. What would you have instead?
I make it a TV show
Juries are a fucking retarded idea anyway. "Yeah let's place a person's life in the hands of 12 people who have had no past experience or knowledge of science or how to properly examine evidence".
It isn't the Jury who decide the science behind the trial... It is the scientists that the lawyers employ and use to testify on their findings. It is the lawyers jobs to find people who can explain to the jury the facts of the science. For example. The case has something to do with finding a certain chemical element in a blood sample.. It is the job of the EXPERT running the sample to explain this and the lawyers to ask the questions to make a final decision. You wouldn't have to know anything about collecting samples, but if the lawyer asks the expert, "Is it possible this sample was contaminated in your lab" the expert would say, "No everything was done under Class 5 safety conditions in a dry room." Then the jury with NO SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND can say, "Well clearly the chemical came from the defendant, so that is good evidence he was there and is guilty."
The problem is when the scientific evidence is taken too far, or not really scientific at all handwriting analysis, blood spatter anaylsis and so forth are pretty bloody tenuous fields (re: not reliable or respected) in the literature of forensic criminology even DNA has been assigned far more value than it warrants
Jury Duty is mandatory if I'm not mistaken. To 'get out' of Jury Duty is to break the law. Just like this guy, and look where he is now.
You can get out of it like I did saying that I go to College. (I wasn't lying so it's perfectly fine.)
Jurors really aren't supposed to do their own investigating. My professor was telling us that the court didn't want any jurors going over to the waffle house where the crime was committed. They're only supposed to go on on the information presented to them
Jurors are supposed to be unbiased. Any outside information regarding the case could sway a jurors opinion. That's why in high profile cases, Jurors are asked not to read online about the case. If it was truly an accident, he wouldn't be tried with contempt of court, but it's obviously not. His actions, which he purposely intended, caused a mistrial.
This is like the polar opposite of that one american dad episode.
Do people really hate jury duty enough to get jail time in order to get out of it Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with people
You get paid fuck all money to continue making appearances at a trial instead of going to work. My friend gets paid like $30 a day or something, when she could be at work making well over $100 a day.
name is fitting he got out for being an idiot, ok. Good thing he went to jail.
How to get out of jury duty: Say you're prejudice against whites, blacks, yellows, reds, catholics, jews, muslims, atheists, etc.
