If consoles were a more viable option at the time of their inception, they would have "defined" modern console gaming. Who gives a fuck? Video games are video games.
That's like saying the Wii version of The Force Unleashed was exactly the same as the PS3 version As in you're wrong
That's like saying the Wii version of The Force Unleashed was exactly the same as the PS3 version
No actually, it's nothing like that at all. Nice try though.
Didn't Carmack say that this was a mistake for RAGE, and PC should be the main focus from now on?
Maybe Carmack was one of the ones that got laid off.
Maybe Carmack was one of the ones that got laid off.
Never.
Maybe Carmack was one of the ones that got laid off.
Oh gawd no, please! :gonk:
id Software is now working on Doom 4, which was first announced in 2008, and the company has confirmed that the game will use the home consoles as the main development platform, relegating the PC to a secondary role .
That line seems more like an author trying to make some point rather than an objective journalistic statement. Nevertheless, id is still hiring. Probably cutting some people and targeting higher quality developers.
Even if it's (in your opinion) best for id, it still alienates PC gamers because we will be an afterthought. Thats why "we" care.
Accept it's not the best thing for Id. The soul reason Id is in a financial crisis right now, is because they wasted their time focusing on the consoles with rage. You think the game wouldn't have sold much better if the graphics were leaps and bounds over anything out today? Especially now that consoles are reaching the end of their life cycle and people are coming back to PC. The game would have sold so much better if it was focused more on the PC. Id only knows how to make graphics, its sad to say, but they suck in the game-play department. Doom 3 had really poor gameplay mechanics but it sold millions because of the fact that it looked better then anything out there at the time.
but they suck in the game-play department
Nope.
FUCK ID MAN! THEY SHOULD BE WORKING ON THE PC ONLY EVEN THOUGH IT'LL PROBABLY FORCE THEM TO DISSOLVE AS A COMPANY BUT FUCK THAT I'M SELFISH AND COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE WITH JOBS I'D RATHER GET MY GAME!!! fucking get over yourselves
The standard development of videogames seems to go like this now Create game for xbox. Runs fine on xbox with a solid framerate. Port game awfully across to the ps3. Games runs with bugs, worse graphics, and an inconsistent framerate Port ps3 version across to PC, for some reason. Game runs like absolute shit, crashes every 5 seconds, and on top of it it has awful drm attached And then they inevitably bitch about piracy. Its been a while since i actually bought any of the new AAA games for pc, because the indie ones off steam are a lot of fun. Anyone played sequence recently?
Shit.
id Software is now working on Doom 4, which was first announced in 2008, and the company has confirmed that the game will use the home consoles as the main development platform, relegating the PC to a secondary role.
Well fuck you guys, I already saw what a shitty job you will do at porting games like Rage. Won't buy
Rage was pretty sweet, I don't see why people hate on it. It felt like a modern doom/quake.
Because the 'texture streaming' technology it touted didn't work, ending in muddy textures and shitty models on even the highest-end PCs? The gameplay was good, however, the UI was terrible and the art style contradicted itself constantly
nope rage was a good game plagued by bad PC bugs
Rage won't even run on my Brother's PC, despite me trying everything I could find online to fix it. Convinced me not to waste my money.
Rage was a boring FPS with driving elements shoehorned in.
Pete Hines, who is the vice president of marketing and public relations at Bethesda, has stated, “As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. why would they release doom as a console-centric game?
I was looking forward to Doom 4 as a throwback to the golden age of FPS games, what a shame. Looks like I won't be pre-ordering this, seeing how I don't want to buy into another potential RAGE-esc scenario. I'll see how the final port is before decide whether or not I'll pick it up.
Didn't they announced that they weren't focusing on PC's anymore after Rage?
"We knew that all older AMD drivers, and some Nvidia drivers would have problems with the game, but we were running well in-house on all of our test systems," he said. "When launch day came around and the wrong driver got released, half of our PC customers got a product that basically didn't work ... Issues with older / lower end /exotic setups are to be expected on a PC release, but we were not happy with the experience on what should be prime platforms." However, Carmack is unrepetent about disappointing PC gamers who expected a quality product, stating that you can design a game to work properly on consoles or high-end PCs, but you can't do both. Since id no longer considers the PC important, it chose the former: "You can choose to design a game around the specs of a high-end PC and make console versions that fail to hit the design point, or design around the specs of the consoles and have a high-end PC provide incremental quality improvements. We chose the latter." "We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games. That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version. "A high end PC is nearly ten times as powerful as a console, and we could unquestionably provide a better experience if we chose that as our design point and we were able to expend the same amount of resources on it. Nowadays most of the quality of a game comes from the development effort put into it, not the technology it runs on. A game built with a tenth the resources on a platform ten times as powerful would be an inferior product in almost all cases."
Source It's mostly about money, it's really sad to see a company that really got modern P.C games going turn it's back on us like this.
[id Software is now working on Doom 4, which was first announced in 2008, and the company has confirmed that the game will use the home consoles as the main development platform, relegating the PC to a secondary role.
Well then it looks like if I buy it I will have to wait 2 months again just to start the game and another 2 to get it to go more then 10 frames a second. [editline]11th January 2012[/editline]
Why does everyone bitch about RAGE, i thought it was a reasonable game, not wonderful but still worth the money

"Hardcore gamers" want everything go to their way because they have insanely high expectations.
Or because the game didn't even start for a lot of people if you had an amd card.
No actually, it's nothing like that at all. Nice try though.
sanius, making shitposting in the news sections his job since 2005
RAGE is a ghastly piece of shit when it comes to story development. It was fun and all, but it presented you with all these potential characters and places and left you with nothing. The basic premise of the game: settle in new town, do some races, go to a bandit hideout with a different look to the "new" enemies and voice overs and kill everyone. Rinse and repeat until the END.
Rage achieved one thing that a lot of other SP shooters just don't come close to doing, and that's fun combat. Most games completely fail in that aspect, and I'd gladly give up story and graphics (I think it looked wonderful but apparently I'm wrong) for some decent fucking gameplay. Doom 4 will probably be a retread of doom 3, where the main strength an id game can have is completely wasted. Console focused or not it'd still be awful.
You can't do anything with Doom, nor should you. That's where Doom 3 fucked up. They tried to have a story. Doom and id games in general are comparable to porn. You don't watch porn for the story.
God dammit id, why?
Would console gamers even want Doom 4?
Would console gamers even want Doom 4?
What is that even supposed to mean? Are you seriously suggesting that people who play video games on a console are inferior and therefore wouldn't appreciate a game where the main objective is to blow aliens and demons to bits?
"Hardcore gamers" want everything go to their way because they have insanely high expectations.
A working PC version: Insanely high expectations. [editline]11th January 2012[/editline]
What is that even supposed to mean? Are you seriously suggesting that people who play video games on a console are inferior and therefore wouldn't appreciate a game where the main objective is to blow aliens and demons to bits?
Well Doom has only been popular on PC...I thought my comment wasn't that hard, unless you are playing dumb like you did back when you only shit posted.
ID fucked up when they let themselves get bought out. You can't do what you believe in when someone else is calling the shots.
Let's just hope that they know what they are doing and won't make it just a console port.
