• id Software Lays Off Staff, Doom 4 Development Unaffected (with a twist!)
I just find it deranging that ID Soft didn't make the "millions time more fun" way to play the game the actual intended way to play the game. If I want to play a game the way I want to, of course I'll play it the way I want to, it I still find it alarming that these developers, well known for making brutally fast games (except for doom 3, and even that one was quite fast paced), completely shifted their approach of gaming right after Bethesda bought them. I hope Doom 4 really won't be a game where your character is forced to walk slowly and where everything is done via QTE, because if they keep going in the direction of Rage, the next step is taking out entirely the fast part and force the player to play the boring, slow part.
I would go so far as to say the fast method was an intended way of playing it. The game seems to be a perfect storm of conditions that make it fun, even on consoles. Graphics that are bad up close to objects that are being stared at but look better than most games on the market when you're moving fast. Strafejumping left in from previous id game engines, not removed like any other developer would to preserve balance in the cover based method. 60 FPS on consoles isn't useful for cover shooting where you don't need to track things precisely or move flawlessly at high speeds, it's useful when you NEED fantastic response times as in a fast paced shooter. Iron sights in rage don't give much (if any) bonus to accuracy, so you can move around and shoot perfectly effectively. There are a few non-vehicle weapons that are practically made to allow you to fight vehicles on foot, and the game very rarely forces you into one. The only game design choice that goes against a fast-paced game in rage is the bits where the game makes you stay still while a few waves of enemies come in that you have to kill before you're let free.
Don't be mad at id, just ignore them and pass on their games. There's plenty of other good things to play on the PC and there always will be. That's how the market usually works. You can have faith in a company to deliver quality, but if they don't follow through consistently, change your expectations and move on.
honestly D3 was kinda cool, but I didn't like it too much. Hopefully it has some Doom1/2 style gameplay. if it's just cheap ass horror, no damn way will I pay for it.
Cheap ass horror is what made those games back in the day. It wasn't scary but the large amount of demons sure kept you on your feet.
Cheap ass horror is what made those games back in the day. It wasn't scary but the large amount of demons sure kept you on your feet.
It wasn't "jump scares it's dark everywhere and I can't find duct tape anywhere" horror though. It was fast paced, gory mindless fun, and though I agree that games at this era of technology should feature more subtlety than thirty years ago, it's still not a reason to turn such an awesome game into a barely decent horror flick game that can actually scare you for about thirty minutes of gameplay.
First you say you "quite liked" Doom 3 and Rage was "pretty good", and now you're saying Skyrim is the best game ever? Skyrim was entertaining and all but... wow.
how is that weird? i quite liked Doom 3 and Rage was pretty good, but Skyrim was the best game ever. [editline]12th January 2012[/editline]
I don't get how you and Pain so heavily judge "nerds" and their culture on a site dedicated to PC gaming and then turn around and display the same ugly behavior you guys acuse FP of having.
how did i get lumped into this? and of course i'd display the same ugly behavior as "nerds", that's pretty much what I am.
Cheap ass horror is what made those games back in the day. It wasn't scary but the large amount of demons sure kept you on your feet.
Classic Doom wasn't cheap ass horror. It wasn't any kind of horror. People need to get the idea that Demons in a video game automatically = horror out of their heads.
Cheap ass horror is what made those games back in the day. It wasn't scary but the large amount of demons sure kept you on your feet.
umm no, it was horror-like genre, but NEVER meant to be scary or really genuine horror, it was meant to big fast paced gory ass kicking fun. So trying to make D3 scary was the worst mistake every seeing as it just can't be, that's so not doom. If they made D3 have that old school feel of fast paced open action it would've worked.
Did anything change since this?
God dammit id, why?
Because money.
PC gaming is dead.
PC gaming is dead.
So PC gaming is dead because a company decides to focus on the console market?
enjoy developing for devices more than half a decade old I'll sit here playing my glorious valve releases... when they actually get released.
enjoy developing for devices more than half a decade old I'll sit here playing my glorious valve releases... when they actually get released.
Bring Me The New Half-Life
So PC gaming is dead because a company decides to focus on the console market?
ID Software was MADE for PC. It is very ironic that a company focused on PC gaming decided to abandon the very thing they once cherished.
ID Software was MADE for PC. Frankly, iD stopped playing a big role in PC gaming after Doom 3 came out.
i didnt like doom 3 and RAGE felt very bland

in a sad way it would be kind of hilarious if doom did somehow end up being a predominantly grey-brown, cover-based third person shooter
in a sad way it would be kind of hilarious if doom did somehow end up being a predominantly grey-brown, cover-based third person shooter
doom 3 came close the atmosphere and visuals were just as drab anyway
To be honest, as long as this port actually functions I'll buy it.

Since Quake 2 I've had no particular love for ID, and they have accomplished little to nothing on the PC scene since then. Not missing much really. I was more sad to see Lucasarts putting out more console games and not continuing franchises like X-Wing/Tie Fighter.
It wasn't "jump scares it's dark everywhere and I can't find duct tape anywhere" horror though. It's what Doom was trying to be but couldn't. You'll see what I mean once you play it.
But that doesn't mean PC Gaming is dead. It's grown far, far beyond iD Software. Frankly, iD stopped playing a big role in PC gaming after Doom 3 came out.
Even before Doom 3, ID stopped being a player in the PC market. I'd say after Quake 3 for most people, and after Quake 2 for those who liked Unreal Tournament more than Q3.
doom 3 came close the atmosphere and visuals were just as drab anyway
Yeah... it wasn't a pureblood brown-grey cover shooter, but these days, you wouldn't fool anyone by saying they weren't thinking it while they made it.
I wasted 20 minutes of life reading this thread, and I see this man Sanius posting. I like reading good books, but hes like that annoying fucking interceptor in the background of a news broadcast. Will you just be quiet, your posts made me reply.
Console versions = money
I'd rather play the older games anyway. More effort went into the gameplay of those. Even RTCW is more addictive than their newer stuff.
Yeah... it wasn't a pureblood brown-grey cover shooter, but these days, you wouldn't fool anyone by saying they weren't thinking it while they made it.
Doom 3 came out before the grey-brown cover-based third-person-shooters arrived. [editline]14th January 2012[/editline] And I kind of liked Doom 3, the primary gameplay elements felt solid, it was just a pain in the ass with all the darkness and enemies constantly popping up.
I hope doom 4 will come back to ID's roots and will allow and encourage the kind of gameplay you described as the actual, first way to play, instead of some sort of added challenge.
They can't even make a decent remake of Wolfenstein. Gameplay is always priority.
They can't even make a decent remake of Wolfenstein. Gameplay is always priority.
Wolfenstein didn't even need a remake/reboot in the first place, to be honest. [editline]14th January 2012[/editline]
Priority to console versions = money
Fixed it for you
Even RTCW is more addictive than their newer stuff.

They can't even make a decent remake of Wolfenstein.
Neither of those were developed by the main id team, just on the engine, with the IP, and overseen by some id execs.
in a sad way it would be kind of hilarious if doom did somehow end up being a predominantly grey-brown, cover-based third person shooter
Gears of doom: Warlord's gate.
