They never have been. I'm pretty sure most of science is built around theories, which are constantly changed as new information comes along. Besides, we're talking about DNA. It's not exactly a simple construction, there are hundreds of thousands of different variables, even more, that have to be taken into account. Fixing one variable may cause another to break, who knows.
