Atheist assaulted by Muslim, case dropped, victim criticized by judge for offending religious belief

It didn't even seem like he was choking him, sure he may have been holding him, but the athiest guy's voice sounded perfectly fine as he shouted 'This man is attacking me! Oooooh! Help!'
i don't care what you people think
running around dressed like that guy was, that's asking to get your ass kicked
judge is still a dumbass though
This won't be a popular opinion. But having seen the video, I can't say I either agree or disagree with the Judge's ruling. What I can say is that some people are such tards that they deserve to loose a tooth or three every now and then.
Yeah, a criminal assault took place, but not without some serious provocation. I'm an atheist, but such atheists as those portrayed in the video make me sick.

how about you act like an adult and not punch people because they hurt your feelings.
the dude had it coming, but if someone put their hands on me for parading like that, i'd start a fight rather than take it to the courts.

You're not legally entitled to assault someone in America because they hurt your feelings. I don't see how you can imply that the victim deserved to lose some teeth because he said some words that offended people.
The dumbass atheist deserved what he got.

Provocation of that sort is a mitigating factor in legal consideration of assault and may have been enough, in light of the video evidence, to drop the charges.

Legal or not, it has to end at some point. If I'm being called a fatass constantly at school, do I just sit there and take it? No, I punch the fucker who called me a fatass in the jaw. THEN it ends. I'm sure if this muslim would've gone to the authorities they would just laugh at him. They say two wrongs don't make a right, which is bullshit in most cases.

I wouldn't use labels so carelessly, they make your intelligence appear inferior. Drop the 'atheist' and say 'The dumbass deserved what he got' and you're okay.

I know. It's just atheists always complain about how religion is "shoving their beliefs in your face", and then a good majority of them can't comprehend they're doing the same thing in the same way.

Lose some teeth? At the most there was some forceful shoving.
I mean, I don't think he deserved to get shoved, but he really should have expected something like this to happen.

I see something wrong with this sentence. I'd like to see the scientific demographic survey that revealed this shocking result.

Maybe not the majority. But a good portion of them do.

Still requires a source.

He dressed up as Mohammed and joked some lines. He didn't say "islam is a lie convert to atheism"

I 100% disagree. In no circumstance should someone be physically attacked for expressing their opinion..ever, no matter how offensive it is. Not legally, not morally either.

That might be how kids act in high school, but when you're in the real world you can't just go around punching everyone who hurts your feelings.
Punching someone over words is incredibly stupid, because it shows people that you let words offend you so much that you start throwing a fit. Then they'll think "Haha look at that kid, he gets so offended when you call him a fatass. Let's go make fun of him."
If the Muslim should have had strong enough faith in his beliefs, he could have easily just thought to himself "wow, that guy is really making an fool out of himself right now. I feel pity for this man". Instead he had to show everyone that his faith is apparently so weak that he has to take serious offense to some clown walking around on the street making an idiot out of himself.

I was referring to archangel's comment about the teeth.
Sure he should have expected it to happen, and it wasn't very intelligent for him to do it, that doesn't in any way justify the assault though.
Freedom of Speech, The Atheist was expressing him self and so did the muslim guy?
I say stop mocking religions because that will lead to problems but people still do it and then they complain that someone attacked them for "expressing " them self.
The guy in the video was 100% looking for problems.

It would be your fault you're a fat ass. It's not the guy's fault that immigrants don't understand how free speech works.

I admit I don't know shit about Buddhism, but I have met actual Buddhists who believe that Buddhism isn't really a religion, more of a set of principles. That's why I didn't count them when defining "religious"
FYI for all of you and the judge who don't seem to get it.
This is hate speech.

Again, this isn't a government we're talking about here, this is an individual. The atheist in question was being deliberately offensive, and it was hardly surprising one of the people present lost his cool and *pushed* him. Didn't lop off his dick or anything, just pushed him. We're not talking about what *should* have happened, we're talking about what did happen, taking all the circumstances into consideration, and talking about whether the guy who pushed the troll should be convicted. I say no. Give him a firm warning and let him off, because he wouldn't have attacked the troll if the jackass wasn't practically asking for it.
[editline]29th February 2012[/editline]
And before anyone thinks of telling me I'm wrong about him being deliberately offensive because he was only dressing up as Mohammed, you know, I know, and that guy sure as hell knew that to the Muslim community, that's fucking offensive.

Good point, it is considered a "philosophy" or "way of life" by some. I'd consider it a religion only because it does teach Karma and Reincarnation in many versions of the belief (but like the deities, not all of them)... and that's pretty loosely defined anyway.

I had some Christian asshats call me a devil-worshipping hedonist retard once. That's dumb and offensive as fuck, and I didn't go around roughing them up. No, being butthurt is NOT a valid excuse to hurt people.
After all, if he was deliberately trying to anger someone and got pushed for it, I'm more disgusted that he had the utter gall to try pressing charges. It's only just, in light of that, that the person who pushed him have the charges against him thrown out.

Unfortunately, not everyone is just like you. Besides, some people might say you didn't 'go around roughing them up' because you were afraid of getting your ass kicked. See how that works? We're not talking about what people SHOULD do, we're talking about what people DID, and finding fault with both parties involved. At which point we ask "Who started it?" and see the jackass who was trolling as the culprit.

apologists like you make me fucking sick
if the muslim guy gets offended from something so trivial then that is his problem, and the rest of society has no obligation to pander to him

Point is that they're all intended to be offensive. Not on how you ignore the severity of it just because it's changeable. He must be toooo out of touch with society to not realize that his actions are offensive to some. No matter how ridiculous you think that their beliefs are, you should try to think and speak with rationality than with ignorance.

if he was ignorant it would never have occurred to him to dress up like mohammed
he knew full well what he was doing, and it was done for the same reason as draw mohammed day - to show that muslims don't have a monopoly on who can and cannot make an image of the prophet
just because he knew he was being offensive does not mean he deserved it. this is what the first amendment was designed to protect.

i hope you realize that islam is an integral part of many people's lives (if you need proof, look at the way people reacted to the qu'ran burning)
running around in a costume designed to offend muslims, that's just asking for it. especially when you consider the history islam has had in recent years.
also don't act you aren't an apologist yourself

Of course it was deliberately offensive. I'm arguing that he should legally be held liable for what he did. I don't see how you could ever argue that violence against another person is justified in any other circumstance unless it is in self-defense or defending others.

It doesn't matter if someone is offended, physical violence still isn't justified in any way. You're not permitted to strike someone because they have offended you. It may be offensive, but he is fully protected to do it under the first amendment.

yeah, the charges should have stuck in my opinion
really though, people like this make atheists look like a bunch of tasteless, immature kids. he really should be ashamed of himself.
