It's gonna have guaranteed contamination.
What they should do, is make a big metal torpedo to collect samples, then sit it nose down in the ice and snow, and let it melt it's way down.
Then just have it return to the hole when it's finished and hook it back on and pull it up.
It'd just freeze right back behind it.
I know what they'll find: a lost Russian Nuclear submarine. Hell, maybe they'll find two of them that crashed into each other.
All Lovecraft fans just collectively shat themselves...
Hopefully they find Ry'leh and convert Cthulhu to communism.
if you thought nazi dinosaurs were scary now theres communist dinosaurs

Then my religious lord could be my political leader!
but really it would totally be the elder things, not Chtulhu, who they'd find
But all the Russians do when problems are encountered is either
A) Nuke the whole thing or B) Abandon shit and hope no one realizes it was all your fault.
Have russians ever nuked anything?
History is not my strong point, but as far as I remember, they didn't nuke anyone at all.
Is OvB's body ready?
Yes.

Shit bro that sounds an awful lot like the US.
There is only one solution to a Russian problem
A) Alcohol
Cryostasis is gonna get real
Yes.

That pool looks badass at 8:03.

They didn't nuke anyone as far as I know, but someone might have wondered into the blast zone. The only time a nuclear device was used in combat was in WW2. They did test a bunch of nukes, including the worlds biggest nuclear bomb, the Tsar Bomba
They're gonna find some Lovecraft shit in the ice...

I hope it was heated :ohdear:
The last I heard about this was in January, when they had a few day's worth of drilling before it became too inhospitable to continue. I can't tell if this is a re-report or whether they've started again.

Hey at least it's sterile. Why doesn't russia fill the pit with Vodka instead of Kerosine then...

Kerosene is about as sterilizing as ethanol.
That pool looks badass at 8:03.
That would be dam fun, the water would be spinning due to the movements of the ship!

Then it will get contaminated with the sterilizers.

They're worried about biological contamination, which probably won't be an issue considering how pressurized the lake is. For example, it is almost 4 times the pressure of the atmosphere of Venus.
For every kilogram of water, there is 2.5 kilograms of oxygen and nitrogen.
That's an insane amount.

When the whole is complete wont the ice push downwards and cause a shitload of water to spout out of the top then.
When the hole is complete won't the ice push downwards and cause a shitload of water to spout out of the top then?
As the 4 kilometers of ice is already pushing down it, it's under a huge amount of pressure already.
Pretty much, which is why the Russians think that they're no danger of contamination (unless they're forcing down materials with a force of about 5000 pounds per square inch).
What I wonder is what measures they have in place to stop the entire lake spurting up after they breach it.

Weird, I'm going to glasgow, meeting people going to a guitar clinic to see Devin Townsend and then heading to his gig later tonight.
Fuckin weird how you're wrong ain't it v:v:v

Uh... I'm not sure, but I think that was his point. You're not a scientist who lives in Antarctica, spending weeks on a ship with shitty 128k internet, just thinking how you are going to solve the problem of contamination.
Unlike Comrade Sasha.

If the machine is autoclaved it will kill something like 95% or so percent bacteria, leaving the extremophilic bacteria that can survive high temperatures but not low temperatures, only leaving stuff like viruses or prions.

So how do you autoclave the ice surrounding the drill?
[editline]7th March 2011[/editline]
Perhaps stick a tube down the first thousand meters, and then put the autoclaved drill down?
Anyone know how far extremophile bacteria goes down in Antarctica ice?
[editline]7th March 2011[/editline]
I'm guessing all the way, with varying degrees of age.

Fair enough I could be wrong, not an expert on these matters and I know that, just throwing out possibilities.
