I would definitely take the free coffee and laugh as I left.
How many friends do you have? Imaginary doesn't count.
To be honest most pay it forward places I've heard off essentially put the coffeecash on a buffer and they allow a homeless person to come in and ask if any had been paid forward. If they were then can have one of them. This kinda makes sense and does serve some purpose. You're paying for a coffee for someone who can't afford it. The starbucks way seems kinda retarded though. Just seems to be hitched to the next person in line.
Yeah, I learned the term "pay-it-forward" as that, for someone who can't afford it, rather than paying for the enxt person in line.
Okay if you want to argue semantics... being charitable is usually meant to be helping people who are actually IN NEED.
[t]https://sslimgs.xkcd.com/comics/charity.png[/t] So did the people just pay for the next person's order or were people getting handed whatever drink the person in front wanted them to get?
Exactly. Every single one of them would've paid almost the same sum for themselves. So why do you treat this as anything other than what it is: a cheap way for people to feel good about themselves without having to actually put any effort in helping anyone.
and why do you treat it as if it was a bad thing?
How's this work. What if the person behind you ordered $15 in coffee and you ordered a tall plain coffee? I don't buy this story to be honest. Was everyone buying someone a tall plain coffee or something? I don't go to starbucks for a coffee, I want my frozen caramel coffee flavored slushy.
whats to buy? its not an alien concept, this happened to me a week ago at mcdonalds. you can just ask how much the people behind you owe on their bill and then pay for their food. even though you can end up spending more than you would on your own food its a fun thing to do and people get caught up in the moment and dont mind spending the extra money.
and why do you treat it as if it was a bad thing?
Because it's like the "like this post to support cause XYZ"; it's an easy out for people to feel good without doing any impactful good, and thus encourages complacency.
Because it's like the "like this post to support cause XYZ"; it's an easy out for people to feel good without doing any impactful good, and thus encourages complacency.
why? why does doing something nice, even if it's not impactful, mean people aren't going to do nicer things? if anything, criticizing people because what they did was not "nice enough" doesn't really encourage them to do anything better
Oh woe is me, people broke the monotony of daily life and did something with their money to have fun,why can't they be like me and stop at goodwill and make a donation after I get my weekly paystub
Yeah, I learned the term "pay-it-forward" as that, for someone who can't afford it, rather than paying for the enxt person in line.
Yeah, here the term is usually "hanging coffee"or zavesene kafe.
Or you could ya know take that free coffee and use the money you would've spent and donate it to a charity which would actually do some good in the world instead of making people "Feel good" about buying someone's $7 starbucks coffee. Edit: Please give me dumbs yes

Wow, you spent 10 bucks on the guy next to you instead of yourself and the next guy spent 10 bucks on you. You certainly switched things around didn't you? You stupid, vain motherfuckers. If you want to go do something useful with your money go donate it to someone who needs it. This is just a circlejerk of rich people spending money for other rich people so they can go share it on facebook later claiming faux generosity.
OH WOW a whole 10 dollars, you've saved a whole orphanage of children!... ...for about 1 second. [editline]26th August 2014[/editline]
Yep so much edge, do you not realize this is just circle jerk of people accomplishing nothing other than making it seem like hey did a good thing today.
Who cares Man you 2 must be the life of the party. Lets hope no one ever says something like "I've done my good deed for the day" next to you, or they'll get scolded for not helping a dying man or some charitable organization. [editline]26th August 2014[/editline]
What you're suggesting is they donate to charity, but why would they do that? Why is charity related to this story? Why does everything have to be for charity? Charity charity charity. All these people are bad because they didn't donate to charity. If I were in this Starbucks line, I'd probably keep my money and be thankful for the free coffee. I wouldn't be like, "Woah man, you expect me to pay for the next person in line? What, are you ridiculous? BRB GUNNING IT TO THE NEAREST CHARITY." Why does everything have to be a downward spiral into charity? Guess what, instead of arguing on the internet you could be donating money to charity. Instead of doing anything in life, you could be donating money to charity. Charity charity charity. Everyone's a bad person because of charity. I'm sick of the guilt trips and you're exactly the problem, dude. Why can't I just walk outside without being the offender of everyone? Jesus. And no, I'm not saying charity is a waste of time or anything, I'm simply saying you're completely devaluing this act because it isn't something as incredible as donating to charity. Not every action that happens in a person's day is really all that incredible. Everyone has flaws. Not everyone can be superman all the time with full-blown perfection. I think this is stupid but it was a fun little thing for these people. Let them have it and stop dogging on them for not saving the world. And last but not least, what makes you qualified to say something like that? What do you do? What did you do today?
Best part is how some people guilt trip others who can barely pay for their own daily stuff. Friend of mine sort of did that once. Gave a euro to a homeless man on the street. I felt bad for not giving, but if I had given, I'd give my last coin, and next week, I couldn't eat for a whole morning.
Some dude did this for me a while back at Del Taco. Made my day so I put 10 on the next person's meal
A lot of people seem to be missing the point. This isn't charity, its not intended to be. If the person behind you in line cant afford coffee, then sure, give yourself a pat on the back, but otherwise, it's just a fun thing to do with strangers who normally would be bored out of their minds waiting for coffee.
