Change to 'Bios' will make for PCs that boot in seconds
I can imagine a virus coming out for this or something, although it will probably be 'impossible'. I quite like the good old bios, and to be honest my PC boots up in less than a minute anyway.
You can get viruses for BIOS anyway.
They're rare, but they exist.
My PC usually boots in 20-30 seconds. Still, it would be nice to just press the button and be able to go within 5.
Isn't this just the thing that has the same functionality as the good old BIOS, just with a fancy GUI? Also, I fail to see how this is gonna revolutionise boot times, most of the boot is just spent waiting for the OS to be loaded into RAM, there's nothing you can do about that from the BIOS point of view.
EFI has been around for yonks, it is what starts Macs.

Even if it is slower

I never boot my PC anyway

In soviet Russia, PC boots you
I guess it makes sense to change it. BIOS is pretty much the only technology that has been around since the first computers.
Finally.
Macs have had this forever. Windows computers couldn't get around to it due to compatibility reasons
Linus Torvalds knows his shit.
About EFI:
EFI is this other Intel brain-damage (the first one being ACPI). It's
totally different from a normal BIOS, and was brought on by ia64, which
never had a BIOS, of course.
Sadly, Apple bought into the whole "BIOS bad, EFI good" hype, so we now
have x86 machines with EFI as the native boot protocol.
...
Not that I'd ever claim that the BIOS is wonderful either, but at least
everybody knows that the BIOS is just a bootloader, and doesn't try to
make it anything else.
The absolutely biggest advantage of a BIOS is that it's _so_ inconvenient
and obviously oldfashioned, that you have to be crazy to want to do
anything serious in it. Real mode, 16-bit code is actually an _advantage_
in that sense. People know how to treat it, and don't get any ideas about
it being some grandiose framework for anything else than "just load the OS
and get the hell out of there".

Really? Damn.
UEFI again. Last time this was in the news it was horrible.
So it's only a code within the BIOS that's being changed to allow faster booting times? Does that means that all existing computers will be able to get this update, or is it only for future computers here on out?
All different motherboards have different BIOSs hence all the different BIOS updates for them so no.
Going to be a bitch trying to hit the F8 key fast enough for safe mode...
Just kidding for those who are going to rage against my post haha.
Seems logical that they updated it. It's something you really don't realize is out of date because it works...
My POST screen lasts at tops 10 seconds, and if I have an error beeps are gonna be real fast? lol...
Then it takes Vista a year and a half to load -_-.. stupid vista, my win7 laptop loads much faster..
who cares I only reboot for kernel upgrades anyway
So what happens if you have a problem and can't boot into your OS?
Isn't there already a computer so fast it downloaded 2000 files faster than a brick falling out a two story window?
Now that is awesome. I was happy with my time (~30 seconds) but this'll be great.
This has more to do with portable computing than anything else.
If you're at home or in the office, you probably won't get impatient with booting up 95% of the time. If you need to boot up your laptop to find directions somewhere, or if you're in a meeting and need to present something to a client, then booting up is a horrible experience.
Sounds good to me.
What about mram.

Windows 7 64-bit has support for EFI already.

And Vista 64-bit.

No, it just doesn't have much of anything to boot up so it doesn't take very long.

lolwhat
Are you talking about this?

I just hope this new interface chip will not be made by a corruptible company and allow me to use my linux.
I love the boot up though. Go make a cup of tea in the morning... another day your get dressed beforehand...
It's like the warmup.
Yeah I know.
Mine boots in around 40 seconds anyway, even with sitting at the BIOS options menu thing.
