Waitress finds $12k on one of her tables, calls cops. Cops say call back in 90 days, if no one claim

Horrifically, this is true, it's the only way to survive in the bitter disappointment we call modern adult life.
And suddenly this money goes to the Chief's new Lambourghini.
because some people are considerate and empathetic and might actually be good people?
Money is more important than 'calling the cops'.
Fuck that shit.
That is a great tip or just a really really expensive restaurant.
Fuck that I would have kept it.
I'd keep it too. Twelve THOUSAND dollars. Holy shit. I can't even begin to think of what I would get with it. Building the best computer from scratch would cost like, what? Hell I don't know.
If I found it I would of kept it without a second thought. Enough people in this world are trying to fuck me over as it is, I'll take what I can get and damn anyone that tries to guilt trip me for it.
In this situation I'd isolate the money for 90 days myself then claim it.
And this is the kind of society i have to live sigh...
It's funny because like one in five $5 dollar bills has cocaine residue on it.
If you lived a life of $5-$10 tips per day, then suddenly found a 12,000 dollar tip on your table, wouldn't you have called the cops?
Depends, what if you were the waitress for a major athlete and didn't know it?
Happens sometimes.
I like how people are automatically assuming the cops are of the corrupt variety because there's no evidence to support that the money was drug related when the article is an entire 6 sentences.

Didn't Johnny Depp give a waitress a $2,000 tip or something for no real reason? Wealthy people do share some of that wealth on occasion.

Found it. Not exactly for no reason, but a nice gesture regardless.
I hope she wins the case.
-snip, didn't read-
Damn cops. I hope she wins the case; five kids is a helluva drain on the pockets, and $12k could help give 'em higher standards of living for a time.
Or she could just bring it to the bank and collect interest, and only withdraw it when she needs it.
I wouldn't go spending it all so I could have "higher standards of living" for some time. Rather save it so in case something happens, I have money to cover it.
as terrible as this sounds I have to agree
Is no one on here a waiter? cuz let me tell you, if a table left me 12k I wouldn't say a word. Way too much tax to claim on it

It would (imo) be morally wrong to just take it, and hurry to the owner and ask if it was a mistake (like she did).
If it wasn't and i'm allowed to keep it... KA-CHING! And then keep it. Fuck da polees.
Reporting it makes sense. It's a very large sum that you rarely get in tips. What if the money was counterfeit?
Chances of it actually being "drug money" are highly slim, and in most stories I have heard about people turning in money to the cops and waiting 90 days, they never get the money for one reason or another.
I found a bundle of cash when I was 10, it came out to $733. Did the good thing and handed it to my parents, who handed it into the police. I had completely forgotten about it when 3 months later the cops called and told me to come pick it up. I still have the evidence envelope it came in. How many stories have you heard, exactly?
I would have taken that money in an instant.
In other news Melinda Gates ate at a diner in Minnesota.
I would keep it, maybe half of it, then report it. But either way, this makes the cops look really bad.
Leaving 12k as a tip is kind of sketchy...
Could it have been money that was involved in illegal activity and the lady just left it as a tip to get it off of her hands?

Especially when a bit of further research shows you the box smelled like marijuana to a police dog, and their counterargument is "it didn't smell like weed to me."
This thread is fucking awful.

Yeah, that's a bad thing to be in today's society.
You get fucked over so much more than a bastard or a criminal does.

I think she should've just kept it. There are too many people who'd be willing to screw over others if any amount of money (especially $12,000) was reported lost to the police.
or gone straight to the owner to see why he/she left it there.
she did
My bro found several thousand on the ground outside of a grocery store once.
IMHO if somebody liters and abandons money it's yours.
