Waitress finds $12k on one of her tables, calls cops. Cops say call back in 90 days, if no one claim

How does proving it smells like weed make it drug money? Maybe the guy smoked pot? Who spends 12k on pot, and what proves he was selling it.
I would have taken half of it.
Yeah, that's a bad thing to be in today's society.
You get fucked over so much more than a bastard or a criminal does.
No, it's just a retarded concept drilled into our society that someone who takes "drug money" is a bad person.
Waitress working minimum wage, ridiculous hours per week just to make ends meet for her family taking the 12k vs police funneling the 12k into their department (this is literally what will happen) or otherwise going into government funding.
Shit I think I know who deserves the 12k more, maybe it's FP who is lacking in consideration and empathy.
And that's what you get for involving the police.
Majority of this thread don't seem see the oddness in someone carrying round 12K with them in a box. No one does that and it just screams something not so legal might be connected to it.
If it had been me, I'd much rather hand it in to police than keep it just because someone I never met said to. It sounds like she was actively trying to get rid of it.
[sp]And now to watch the dumbs and disagrees roll in[/sp]
It's funny because if she would have kept the money she would end up fucked by irs/what have you.

Who gives a shit, where do you think that money is going to go? The police are going to funnel it right into their department through various processes.
Bunch of people wanting to talk about the "right thing to do" in this thread, I can't be the only one who thinks the right thing would be to let the waitress who is struggling her ass off just to make ends have the money, as opposed to the police using it to buy some new chairs and uniforms.
As it turns out, the police changed their minds, and the $12,000 is being returned to Knutson, according to her attorney, Craig Richie. He told Reuters that several members of the community knew Knutson and her husband were facing considerable financial woes, and he believes the money was intended as a gift to her family. Assistant Clay County Attorney Michelle Lawson said the money couldn’t be tied to a criminal investigation, and Knutson will soon receive a check.
“We argued that most money that you carry in your pocket has drug residue on it,” Richie told CBS. “She could’ve kept the money and nobody would’ve known. But she said, ‘No, I’m going to do the right thing.’ So she called police and now integrity has now prevailed.”

The Police decided that she is going to be allowed to keep the money. She should be getting a check soon since the money couldn't be tied to a criminal case!
My cousin works at a bar and one night a letter came in with her name on it, she opened it to find $2,500 and a letter that said "You don't know me, but I love you." The creepy as fuck thing is this is in Kenai where everyone knows everyone so shit like that doesn't happen often. She bought a gun shortly after that...

Yeah, OP is failing to list some vital parts, although if the money didn't smell like weed to the human nose, then I'd still consider the money drug-free. Not to mention, "OH NO POT!". Really, what are they trying to do here? Liberating money from illegal drug dealers so they can't buy more to sell? Okay.
"Liberating" money from a waitress with 5 kids because it's "drug money"? WTF?
The Police seriously need to stop taking the law letter by letter, because it certainly doesn't work the other way around.
