You mean you DON'T have those adblocked?
Nope, I make money from ads so why would I want to block others doing the same.
No it's not. When you create an account with google you expect them to use your information for some things, and you give them permission to do so. If you don't want them to do so you can simply not create the account.
But you don't, do you? You still use those products. That's explicitly saying that you are okay with your private information being logged and recorded so they can exploit your search history and private emails to try to sell you stuff. To dismiss that as 'well they need to make money I guess' is incredibly shortsighted and inconsistent if you actually care about your privacy. Does it really mean so little to you that you'll willingly give it up for the sake of a bit of convenience when there are so many competing services besides Google out there? Sure, you could opt out. But you don't, and I'd wager nobody in this thread does. Your privacy ends the moment it's useful for making money off of you. Big corporations that sell even your ostensibly private data to advertising companies are not the good guys here.

The simple difference is I gave google permission to do so, I did not give the US government permission to do so. The US government needs to fuck off and get out of my data, I have no dealings with the US government, I will never give them permission. How and with who I share my private data is my business. Google, although they do some shady things, doesn't use my data without my permission. Simple as that. How you can't see the difference between choosing to give up some privacy to specific companies and having your privacy taken away by the largest government in the world, simply because they feel like they're allowed to, is beyond ridiculous. [editline]8th November 2013[/editline] What it's explicitly saying is I'm giving Google permission to use the private information I allow them to use, and doesn't at all impact my right to choose what I do or don't keep private from whoever I choose. The US government does infringe on that right as they take my information without my permission. I'm not even a US citizen, I don't have nor picked a US representative to voice my opinion, so they have no right to infringe on the rights given to me by MY government. If the world wasn't so deep into the US's ass what the NSA does should be considered an act of war. They're directly infringing on the rights of every single non-US citizen, and possibly also every US citizen (but that's your problem, you chose the assholes who put this in place).

It is some real hypocrisy to get outraged over your privacy being violated, and talk about how important your privacy is to you, and then turn around and willingly toss all your privacy out the window and give all your personally identifying information to a giant corporation because they offer services that are convenient. If you willingly give up your privacy to a for-profit corporation with the incredible reach and power of Google for the sake of convenience you sure can't have cared that much about it in the first place. I'm not even talking about the NSA here. I'm not talking about governments, or who you give your info to. I am talking about what you give and why. For all the talk about how important privacy is in the modern world, there sure are a lot of people coming up with excuses for companies to take and use some of their most private data for the sake of profit. You're not the customer, you're the product, the actual customers are using you to make money in some pretty exploitative ways, and yet people give them a free pass on account of 'well they need to make money somehow'. Do you know what Google is doing with the private emails you send to friends and family? Do you trust them implicitly not to mishandle or exploit that data? Do you trust the advertisers they're selling to, too? People are losing more and more privacy every day but as long as it comes with a fun app or improved performance nobody seems to care, and that's outrageous. Multi-billion dollar corporations selling your privacy as their flagship product should never be considered the good guys.

I don't give as much about my privacy an sich, rather I care about my right to do with my privacy as I see fit. If I want to give up some of my privacy to use google products, that's my business. Forcefully having my privacy taken away from me by a foreign government is a disgrace and disgusting.
the key here is the choice. Give people the choice to do either, and you can eliminate a lot of backlash. Forcing one or the other will cause problems, regardless of your intentions.
Why does the world have to be about people fucking each other over
