tell me how many games use color grading, especially to the extent of this.
I find it harder to think of games that do not take at least a little artistic liberty in the color department. [editline]23rd October 2012[/editline]
People have been complaining about shitty coloring ever since it released.
I haven't heard anybody calling this style of coloring shitty until this happened.
It looks like Battlefield 2 without the filter :(
Battlefield 2 did not look that vibrant.
Wow, I was actually thinking of going back to BF3 if I could turn off the color bullshit. Since I can't, I guess I won't be. I was a retard and bought premium too, thinking BF3's DLC would actually be good. It's all shit. Fuck me
http://bf3.realmware.co.uk/colour-tweaker/ You can turn it off with a button and turn off the supernova sun as well. Watch out downloading this is considered pirating their Sunglasses DLC and New Look DLC
You guys are pretty fucked up. Prior to release: Wow, great graphics! I love the visual style. During release: Game looks great! This really is made for the PC market; cutting-edge visuals, not dumbed-down for consoles! It uses all four cores of my machine! After some dude hacked out a filter: What, there was a filter on it?! Remove, remove! BF3 sucks with a filter! It's so gross! seriously, the fuck.
Dunno I'm a pessimist when it comes to games so my opinion was always quite negative, however the desert looked fine to me in the first videos. Then we got the other environments and meh. As for why people do that: Hype. Examples being this, Diablo 3, and Skyrim (before release they are perfect, at release they are perfect, 5 months after they're shit).
I find it harder to think of games that do not take at least a little artistic liberty in the color department.
So you won't mind naming a few? EDIT: And making everything blue tinted is not a little artistic liberty. It is a whole fucking lot.
I haven't heard anybody calling this style of coloring shitty until this happened.
Then you obviously haven't been reading threads outside of battlelog/battlefield 3 thread. Pretty much every time that something about BF3 comes up it usually becomes how shit the colors are.
shows they are dicks after all
So you won't mind naming a few?
A few that use 'artsy' colors or a few that mimic reality?
And here I was, thinking I might try BF3 after all. Guess not. I think anything by EA and its subsidiaries is shit anyways. The last good thing that came from DICE was Mirror's Edge.
A thread about Battlefield. I see Blackbird88's already in full swing, dumbing and disagreeing with everyone who say they dislike the game, those who point out poor design choices, and the stupidity of the devs.
Battlefield 2 did not look that vibrant.
Gulf of Oman and Wake Island sure did and that Chinese Valley map was pretty colourful.

I use an fxaa injector to have some more color, but something like this would be great. A simple option would be good enough, there isn't any reason to not have an option. Also, the alpha didn't have color grading/correction iirc. It looked really good, especially on metro.
Basically: "Fuck what you want, this is what WE want"
I haven't heard anybody calling this style of coloring shitty until this happened.
The fact that a third party hack has been used for a long time specifically to accomplish this effectively invalidates your statement. Maybe it wasn't a shitstorm initially, but it was severe enough that people sought to circumvent it.
I haven't heard anybody calling this style of coloring shitty until this happened.
Then you haven't ventured outside of the BF3 forums, where everything is a massive circle jerk about how much fun it is to suck the DICE's dicks.
I always read my threads from the bottom. So when I saw Success – DICE Will Offer An Option To Disable The Color Grading Effect In Battlefield 3 I was ecstatic. Roll up 20 threads and I feel like I'm being fucked in the ass.
Just removed the filter, just seeing pictures of the difference is one thing. Actually playing is another, I like it without the filter. Some things look odd though, the game was created with the filter so removing it kinda takes away from the game, I dont know how to describe it. Colors, textures, everything was made with the filter in mind, so now everything now doesn't have the filter, but it just looks a little weird.
Really don't get why people compare BF3 to MW series, or say it is a ripoff of it. To me it feels like BC and BF2 combined.
I'm bored of modern military shooters any way. They're pretty much like how WW2 shooters ended up.
Then you haven't ventured outside of the BF3 forums, where everything is a massive circle jerk about how much fun it is to suck the DICE's dicks.
I don't even go to ANY BF3 forums. Off the top of my head, games I can think of that have a 'natural' color palette - Gran Turismo, MS Flight Sim, Live for Speed/ETC games where that's the point - Half Life games, except for some specific levels. - Call of Duty games? They have a very small amount of it but not enough for me to consider stylized. Games with a mild - moderate amount, disregarding cartoony games - Assassins Creed series - GTA IV - Uncharted series - Mirrors Edge - Silent Hill games - Skyrim - Fallout - Many Final Fantasy games - Crysis 2 Games with heavy film effects and color correction, again not including cartoonish games - Battlefield 3 - Killzone 2 and 3 - Metro 2033 - I Am Alive - Silent Hill games - Spec Ops: the line - Deus Ex: human Revolution - Lost Planet games
The cooling filter doesn't look any different from many blockbuster films I've seen.
and it looks like shit in those films too. but it this case it ruins the art assets especially by muting and fucking up the original colors.
Were you complaining about their color choices before this flip-flopping by Dice?
not vocally, but i understood that it looks like shit. im vocal about it now because that's a dick thing to do to your userbase.
and it looks like shit in those films too. but it this case it ruins the art assets especially by muting and fucking up the original colors. not vocally, but i understood that it looks like shit. im vocal about it now because that's a dick thing to do to your userbase.
Well unfortunately for you those are opinions and plenty of people would say they find the cool, cinematic, somewhat gloomy color palette to look good.

modern is the new WWII.
and in every single case it looks like utter unitelligible shit
Aren't you so edgy. I'm curious, do you just hate any sort of style that isn't just mimicing reality? I'd like to hear from you what games you find to be visually attractive.
Aren't you so edgy.
I don't think you know what edgy means.
and in every single case it looks like utter unitelligible shit
um is that a fact
Well unfortunately for you those are opinions and plenty of people would say they find the cool, cinematic, somewhat gloomy color palette to look good.
then base your art assets in that aesthetic instead of lazily slapping on postprocess effects. the thing about games is that we can tailor art assets to the aesthetic feel of the game without the need to do any post work. with film there is not normally this option. i assure you, you will not ever find a case in which postprocess work would bring a better result than actually making your art assets to fit your aesthetic intentions in the first place. color grading in games is a lazy cop out to give it a certain feel.
and in every single case it looks like utter unitelligible shit
Imo it fits Metro 2033 very very fucking well.
Aren't you so edgy.
uh
I'm curious, do you just hate any sort of style that isn't just mimicing reality? I'd like to hear from you what games you find to be visually attractive.
wow what a fucking strawman if i've ever seen one. well my favorite artstyle in a game is banjo kazooie: nuts and bolts. i don't like realism as much in games.
who cares if it's lazy as long as it ends up looking nice in motion yeah it's true some games overdo it for no apparent reason but I thought it complemented killzone and deus ex's environment nicely.
