The brewing process purified the water and you could brew very low alcohol content so anyone could drink it without worrying about getting drunk.

I've sampled student homebrew before. It was strong, and tasted horrific. I think they fermented sugar or something then added several bottles of smartprice orange squash to it. It smelt and tasted like rotting oranges. Not that Obama brews anything like that, of course...
