But game literally stands for Guns And Many Explosions
Has anyone made the Gone Home house into a prophunt map yet
I don't get all the circlejerking, Gone Home was a great game. It's not the developers fault that people think a video game needs guns, explosions, and no meaningful story.
but the entire thing revolved around a story that just wasn't good enough to justify a game like that. I'm fine with walking simulators, I loved the Stanley Parable because it had branching paths, humor and I rather enjoyed the standalone version of Dear Esther but Gone Home was just boring. Myst had the puzzle element going for it and you look at it and you're just curious from the start? What is this place? It seems like it's some sort of surreal alternate dimension. [t]http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/0/7303/227988-myst_above_garden.jpg[/t] Meanwhile Gone Home is a generic American home that just isn't interesting to explore. It's like going to someone's house and going through their shit. Yeah, it's mildly entertaining seeing what DVDs and books they have, seeing the way they've arranged their house but if I wanted that sort of experience, I'd go online to one of those real estate company sites where they have virtual tours. I mean look at Dear Esther, it's an absolutely beautiful game, it's linear but it has length and a pretty interesting story. How can people praise this [t]http://www.digitaltrends.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Gone-Home-game-screenshot-TV-Room.jpg[/t] more than this? [t]http://s.pro-gmedia.com/videogamer/media/images/pc/dear_esther/screens/dear_esther_5.jpg[/t] [t]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/469735874912784613/77D65CAD21D8876C994D7290F16559456A03A563/[/t] [t]http://winarticles.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/DearEsther-screenshot.jpg[/t]
i still don't get why this game has pissed so many people off for the wrong reasons. they use it to get on their "haha lgbt couples so original... tumblr tumblr tumbLR.." soapbox instead of making actual critique about the game that people would care about. stuff like this is why people don't lend their ears to most gamers when it comes to input. the game itself is as generic as any other indie game (sans the plot and story presentation) yet i almost hear this from no-one when they talk about it
It's not the LGBT couple thing that people find dumb, it's the story(the aspects not the lgbt bit HOLD YOUR HORSES), presentation, 90's saturation, and the fact that you can beat it in about two minutes and its definitely not worth the money. That and we're just getting to a point in general where indie 'art' games are starting to be seen as more and more pretentious.
Has anyone made the Gone Home house into a prophunt map yet
That would honestly be gold
As much as I can draw, its like being in a DnD session where the game master walks you through a house giving you long winded descriptions about everything in the house if you walk into it, and if you find the 'ending area' (even if you missed like 90% of the rest of the 'content') then the session just ends and that's it there's nothing else. It hardly equates to being a game and is more like an extremely short voiced novel that many found to not even be that interesting in the first place. Combine the above with the fact that its been repeatedly hailed as a masterpiece and what have you and what you have is a formula for a bunch of gamers being led into looking for a game experience and instead being presented with what I said before, a short novel.
That has to be the best analogy for it that I've seen. As for the hate for it, yeah, I think the attempt to bill it as a game instead of a story is what led to all the pissed-off people. It's as much a game as writhing on a stage while screaming is opera. Chances are, while it maybe technically counts as part of the medium, people will likely hate it, hate you and be pissed that they paid for something way different than they were hoping for. Some will still like it though, because predicting what people will enjoy somehow has less predictive accuracy than fortune cookies.
Strange, I disliked Dear Esther. I thought Gone Home had a lot more going for it. Of Dear Esther, Proteus, and Gone Home I only really liked the latter. Are there any other "walking simulators" I should check out?
I'm a sucker for artsy games. And I had played the original Dear Esther mod when it was just a school project back then and liked it. I recognize why people didn't like Dear Esther, but I still enjoyed it. Since you asked: Home is a pretty good one too. It's about 90minutes long depending on how fast you play. Pixel graphics, side scroller, really atmospheric, great sound design, and you make choices through the game to determine the outcome. It's kind of a reverse story. You play it from the climax and retrace your steps to figure out what happened. Unfortunately, it ends up feeling like clue a bit once you realize how it all works out. I think it very much fits into this category. It's not a walking simulator, and it's actually a point and click game. The Dream Machine. I got the first 3 chapters in a bundle, but it's fucking fantastic. It's all real clay models photographed and animated so it looks... real. It has a pretty great story and sound, music is great too. Look past the odd character designs, it really works for how strange the game is. Highly recommend it late at night to get immersed into it. Infact I've wanted to replay it. Another Indie: Ether One. I only am a few hours in and doing a review on it but it's a cross between Dear Esther, Myst, Portal 2 (Having a voice controlling you in some ways), and kind of Amnesia ish in terms of world interaction. You are a technician who goes into dreams and explores how their memories are materialized and you interact in the world to relieve them of mental problems. It is beautiful, really well voiced, and I didn't want to stop playing. That's all I can think of now. The Dream Machine currently is still being made, you can buy the first three chapters of six, or prepurchase them all I think.
so you werent a big fan of the last of us a take it
Except the Last of Us had actual gameplay and substance to it [editline]4th August 2014[/editline]
Atleast the last of us has engaging gameplay and isn't just about walking around a house and reading notes.
You ninja

A lot of what makes Dear Esther nice for the people who like it IS the atmosphere, music, and visuals. But for a player for whom the previously listed doesn't have an effect, it's 2 hours of walking around waiting for the next bit of abstract dialogue. I can entirely see why people hate it. I love that shit. But I'm a pretentious film student. Edit: Since we're on the topic, I'll plug a video I made back when it launched. Like I mentioned, I actually played the original mod when it came out, so I went back and did a comparison of the work the new designer did.
It's not the LGBT couple thing that people find dumb, i
if people didn't have a problem with the LGBT thing they wouldn't be making strange, non sequitur comments about "tumblr" (the metonym for "things which have to do with minorities"). [editline]4th August 2014[/editline] like they made a game about lesbians and that apparently means the employees of this studio are all those scary SJW boogiemen who post very, very threateningly about homestuck and sherlock?

First impressions alone?
what's dumb about the LGBT couple thing in gone home is that it is literally the only element in the game that has made it stand out. nothing else in gone home is that revolutionary or interesting. games where you walk around and not shoot anything aren't anything new, hell, myst was popular as hell back in the day. if you changed the setting of myst it'd still have all the atmosphere etc. you change the setting of gone home, or the twist, and there's literally nothing left worth playing.

You have obviously never been to Portland Oregon. Where they are based.
this is middle school level belittling
It is childish but first impressions matter and I didn't even know who they were when I first saw the photo and that was my impression. They made tens of millions of dollars, won countless GOTY awards and they can't even smile for the photo with award in hand and have to have that smug douchey look on their face? I don't know, it just gives off a bad vibe to me.
There is nothing wrong with Walking Simulator based Interactive Story Software (WSISS) but if you want to make a WSISS please don't base it off some shit tumblr-tier ballpit-fest starring Nature-valera, the trans-queer that identifies as a mandarin orange. Here's my idea for a WSISS i'd like to see: You play as an unknown 17 year old boy who is home alone at night sleeping when you are awoken by sirens and faint loud noises outside. You get up and turn on the TV to discover that your city is under attack, you live in the Gaza strip and Israel is invading. You then play for an hour or so gathering objects that are most important to you and you try to find clues in the house that explain where your parents are. As you play the game the explosions and gunfire outside get louder and louder and loopier and you don't know when your time is up.

That's something a crazy person does. I think you might be a crazy person.

As a genre/style of game I had nothing wrong with Gone Home. I think the concept of building a little environment and filling it with random little story bits and just letting the player help build a narrative organically is a novel way to tell a story. However the story itself was shit.
