Seth MacFarlane made insulting jokes during the oscar - Jews, feminists and antiracists furious

does anyone else remember when stephen fry made light of one of humanity's worst days that had two atomic bombs drop into cities that killed several hundred thousands while radiating the surrounding area by referencing to a japanese man as the 'unluckiest', laughing about it, then having his panel go at him how the victim's shit life got shittier in a joking manner?
cause atomic bomb and deaths are so funny!!!
comedy is dead
cause atomic bomb and deaths are so funny!!!
Indeed
Reverting to sexism / racism / etc. in comedy is easy. In the end it just comes down to someone putting their own enjoyment over the suffering of others caused by it — if they can't acknowledge that they are being selfish there is no point, and I've seen people using Carlin/Gervais, or in this case, Stephen Fry, as serious arguments too often to be able to say the contrary.
The problem with the "It's just a joke!" defense here is that you are part of the dominant group telling those with less power how they should respond, when they are telling you they are being hurt or uncomfortable with what you consider humor. It is easy for you to say it's just a joke or you don't mean it and are just kidding because you're not the target and don't have to live in a society where you're the target of discrimination every day.
It just upholds the climate of demeaning and belittlement. Such attitudes also make it signficantly harder for minorities to speak up. No one wants to be "that guy/girl" who can't take a joke, and women, especially online, are already in a weaker position socially and so there is extra pressure to not say anything so you can fit in.
A culture where it's okay to make jokes about, for example, rape, and these victims just have to take it or be branded as killjoys, is very destructive.
I think the funniest part to that song was probably the reactions, almost broke out into tears when that guy next to Naomi Watts looked over to her
How about we follow a simple policy: Either its okay to make fun of everything, or its not okay to make fun of anything.
Boobs song was pretty funny because of the reactions. Especially the 2nd or 3rd one (dont know her name. Emma watson?) she just has this shocked expression while the guy left of her looks down at her tits and goesi all "NICE"

That was Naomi Watts. Pretty sure all those reactions were staged (especially given Charlize Theron was on stage dancing about a minute later while Seth sang), but still amusing.

You are blatantly oversimplifying pretty much everything and trying to make a black-and-white situation out of a complex situation.
how about
instead of your idea
we just
not be assholes when making jokes

I literally suggested just that.

Also I like how you say I'm oversimplifying it then immediately say "Just don't be an asshole".

The "it's okay to make fun of everything/nothing" idea is a false dichotomy. The grey area between the two, where you can make fun of something without being offensive, which is how it really works, is what he's talking about.

How the fuck do you make fun of something without being offensive? Isn't that kinda part of "making fun of" something?
[editline]26th February 2013[/editline]
Yep.

That definition doesn't say you have to cause offense to make jokes about something, though. The "just don't be an asshole" idea is on the right track.
tim and eric is quite literally the most unfunny thing to ever make it to tv
And that's the point of it.
They're still kind of hit and miss but they're the only ones who have success in that style.
It's a break from the same old, some old type of humor.
I literally suggested just that.

"It's not okay to make fun of anything" is saying "no jokes ever".
Sure, I simplified my description for the sake of being brief, but 'not being an asshole' requires looking at context.
Plus, it's easier to say that than to say "don't make sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, etc. jokes, don't make rape jokes, don't make fun of children, don't make fun of innocent people, don't make fun of the disabled, etc." and then list all possible situations where it's not okay to make a joke and then list all of the exceptions.
"Don't make fun of anything" is just trying to say "oh, well, either I'm allowed to make rape jokes or it must not be okay to make any jokes ever, mister fun police".

the real harm being done here is the perpetuation of stupidity as normality.

It is okay to make jokes "about rape," it is not okay for someone to say you can't speak out against people that advocate it. You have to make very clear distinctions between people who make a rape joke because they are telling a joke and people that make rape jokes because they are terrible people that do not have a problem with rape.
the real harm being done here is the perpetuation of stupidity as normality.
i think it might be a bit late for that
Well, I suppose I should say the CONTINUED perpetuation of stupidity as normality. like "ay i just watch the movies for the titties you know what im sayin guys AYYYY!" ie people that love the Transformers films
Seth McFarlane himself is a joke, and he's funnier than whatever jokes he tries to make
It's really obvious you're just acting like you care about those people when in reality I'm pretty sure you don't give a damn. Most of those "hurt" people could give less of a shit what some guy says about them at the oscars. If it was such a big deal what was said then I'm sure it would receive waaaaaay more attention then what it's currently getting.
People talk online about how terribly hurtful everything is and yet they don't do a damn thing about it in real life, were the opinion actually matters.
I'm not talking about hurt feelings, I'm talking about subconsciously making people dislike the people who are constantly made derogatory jokes about.
You see, my issue with stuff like this isn't because it's offensive, it's just flat out not funny.
It's the comedic equivalent of saying "poop" to a six year old.
Well he got an orchestra and background dancers and a choir.
I'd laugh if someone said "poop" to a six year old while using background dancers, an orchestra and a choir.
That song was not funny at all, although I have to admit I chuckled at the reactions.
"It's not okay to make fun of anything" is saying "no jokes ever".
Not really. Making fun of =/= Joking. You can joke about non offensive subjects.
That's from a comedy show?
no it's from my grandfather's funeral
im sure stephen fry would love to be used as a trump card for awful jokes
