Oh, people's feelings are hurt again. What a horrible disaster.
A culture where it's okay to make jokes about, for example, rape, and these victims just have to take it or be branded as killjoys, is very destructive.
Those who don't take it just can't differentiate. There is no reason to be offended by something that isn't actually meant to be taken seriously.
yeah, if its a british man doing that to a welsh person, its an obvious 'throwaway' joke right???
they should just take it as a joke xDDDD!
its not racism when my favorite comedian does it, let me try find vague justification while the obvious context is there!!
He said that his father LITERALLY grew up IN the same street.
I mean, it's not like continually making racist, sexist and homophobic jokes actually hurt people in very real ways.
Oh wait, it totally does.

And if that wasn't enough, you're a really fucking shitty comedian if all you can come up with is old stereotypes.
Sizzle down there bertha

We don't live in a magical world where intent = result
holy shit why does anyone care, its an awards show for movies, he made some jokes, why is everyone such a big fucking baby all the time now?
I thought his We Saw Your Boobs song was pretty clever and funny.

It was sophomoric, cheesy, and in poor taste, but you have to admit that Seth has a nice vibrato.

Because some people in this day and age want to make a big deal out of everything, take everything personal. Being offended now makes your existance acknowledged, apparently, and your opinion somehow more relevant. Most of the folks crying don't even propose any solutions, make any statements, present any argument. They're just making noise - "omg, this guy made stupid joke about watermelons - he's literally hitler, contributing to the ongoing massive apartheid and genocide", who can expect anything like this taken seriously?
Probably already been said but what really got me was:
"His jokes then went on to touch on race, sexism, Jews, domestic violence and the Lincoln assassination."
I mean, how did that get weaved into whatever he was saying in a way it was offensive enough to warrant a mention. :v:

Abuse and oppression of Lincolns in this world is beyond humanity.

He was talking about the movie Lincoln, and how Daniel Day Lewis really got inside the head of the character.
He then made the joke that while Daniel did a good job on that, the best actor to get inside Lincoln's head was John Wilkes Booth.

Jennifer Lawrence's reaction made me go full ":3"
Wow people are so sensitive, they're just jokes.
watch some of the hosts from the 60's or 70's. They roasted people just as hard
tbh I found the boob song dumb, and I don't say this from a Jewish(?), sexist, or racist grounds, it was just falling flat most of the time at the beginning. Trying to cop out and say people are criticizing your jokes for political correctness or what ever bs phrase you want to use is besides the point, it was just a really immature act to do. I mean yeah he's the Family Guy writer but he could've done better than that.

That's an old joke, though. I've heard it before about other actors playing Lincoln.
i agree with you on this
also, can you please change your name to something else? Spooks is a known derogatory term for Africans and a have history of being used against them for a skin color they have no control over. as well, can you please change your avatar? piracy is no laughing matter nor should it be glorified, ask the somali's who are forced into it or victim of it because of circumstances created by international corruption or ask the people whose ancestors were raped or pillaged by pirates, thank you
i browsed every single post for a sp00ks reply to this post and there is not a single one. simply brilliantly thought out and wonderfully written. if any user needs a crash course on how to successfully call out someone and zing them on their own post, this is how you do it
comedy should never be censored for the sake of someones feelings
I'm pretty certain most people aren't saying to censor things as much as they are saying that these kinds of remarks shouldn't be encouraged, because it can hurt people and it's overly presumptuous to tell people when to be offended.
You should be ashamed and embarrassed!
I don't think the song implies they're shameful.

"Your rights end where my feelings begin"
is very destructive.
yeah, "comedy will kill us all not nuclear bombs".
"Your rights end where my feelings begin"
Did I even imply that I want to make it illegal? I'd just wish people would stop accepting bigotry.
Reverting to sexism / racism / etc. in comedy is easy. In the end it just comes down to someone putting their own enjoyment over the suffering of others caused by it — if they can't acknowledge that they are being selfish there is no point, and I've seen people using Carlin/Gervais, or in this case, Stephen Fry, as serious arguments too often to be able to say the contrary.
The problem with the "It's just a joke!" defense here is that you are part of the dominant group telling those with less power how they should respond, when they are telling you they are being hurt or uncomfortable with what you consider humor. It is easy for you to say it's just a joke or you don't mean it and are just kidding because you're not the target and don't have to live in a society where you're the target of discrimination every day.
It just upholds the climate of demeaning and belittlement. Such attitudes also make it signficantly harder for minorities to speak up. No one wants to be "that guy/girl" who can't take a joke, and women, especially online, are already in a weaker position socially and so there is extra pressure to not say anything so you can fit in.
A culture where it's okay to make jokes about, for example, rape, and these victims just have to take it or be branded as killjoys, is very destructive.
Why is every little joke some sort of big destructive issue? I mean really just learn to take a joke.
because there's a fine line between shitty jokes that comes at the expense of others and satire that actually makes sense and is funny
jokes that come at the expense of others
black comedy was worse than the holocaust.
because there's a fine line between shitty jokes that comes at the expense of others and satire that actually makes sense and is funny
Last time I checked satire comes at the expense of the thing being parodied.
People are too sensitive.
Seriously, he's a comedian. Don't take anything he says seriously or it defeats the purpose.
I like it how people don't know how to shave off a bunch of fucking words and not make a fuss about it.
They're just words. If you fall down to your knees and start crying in a torrent of tears and snot because of them, then you should seriously grow up.

you're unironically racist towards certain ethnic groups though
I've noticed the oscars haven't had a good host in years
even the god damn tonys do this shit better
