Wrong thread. This is where you want to go.
shit sorry lol i had the wrong tabs
You can't be serious
Try me. What part of that is so difficult to understand? And it's not so much the feminism train alone - Gender identity, sexual orientation, all of that has been hijacked by these jackasses.
It's due to radical feminists having the largest voice, thus the average person thinks that when they hear feminism now. It's an image problem and if it doesn't get fucking fixed soon it will never work. I'd actually compare it to 9/11, where how just because of a small group of radicals, it poisoned pretty much all relations between anyone that looks middle eastern, like sikhs, hell even a some mexicans getting killed because "Dey luk liek terrists"
So feminists need to solve the problem by constantly defending themselves to ignorant people except oh wait they do already and it didn't work for Muslims either
Admittedly this is also why we need the radicals that give it a bad name, because it raises awareness. But right now it's the wrong kind of awareness.
It certainly is the wrong kind of awareness. I'm pretty sure, over time, that the average western person will detest feminism as a result of these radicals. They don't consider feminism legitimate. Which is a shame, because women still face many problems.
feminists catch VASTLY more shit than everyone else precisely because we're nowhere near true equality yet. its also sad how so many seem to forget one the reasons women have more freedom now is precisely because of the feminist movement. and part of facepunch seems to have a hateboner against feminism, always focusing on the bad shit, never on the good things.
The thing is, you almost never see any good feminism shit on facepunch, even from the self proclaimed feminists, most are just as bad or looney as the other crazy internet ones. It seems all the well educated and actual feminists and not the internet pretend kind just stay quiet, when they should be calling out against the crazier ones.
Try me. What part of that is so difficult to understand? And it's not so much the feminism train alone - Gender identity, sexual orientation, all of that has been hijacked by these jackasses.
If it wasn't tumblr it'd be something else. Especially with the internet, you can find anyone with any view. You can easily find a minority group to project onto a larger group of people in order to justify your world views.
Either getting the radicals to use another name for their crusade, or choosing a better name for the good majority would help a lot though.
there's already names for them; radical feminism and misogyny
The thing is, you almost never see any good feminism shit on facepunch, even from the self proclaimed feminists, most are just as bad or looney as the other crazy internet ones. Stop using the things a few teenagers have said in blog posts as scapegoats to ignore the actual, serious threats to social progress.
don't forget that they're also a frigid bitch if they don't fuck me
Or you're just a "hypergamous slut" either way. I swear the amount of doublethink these people do is absurd, especially when plenty of them seem convinced that feminism will lead only to a totalitarian state, yet they so willingly embrace a concept coined in the most quintessential of totalitarian dystopic fiction.
Politicians who try to outlaw abortion, outlaw contraception, oppose measures to reduce the wage gap, etc, etc are the ones who set social movements back. Stop using the things a few teenagers have said in blog posts as scapegoats to ignore the actual, serious threats to social progress.
Well it's certainly not helping if your opposition has plenty of ammunition to use when they want to rile up the idiot masses. You know, the idiot voter masses.
Well it's certainly not helping if your opposition has plenty of ammunition to use when they want to rile up the idiot masses. You vastly overestimate the reach these tiny little internet communities have.
Well it's certainly not helping if your opposition has plenty of ammunition to use when they want to rile up the idiot masses. You know, the idiot voter masses.
Nobody who votes cares about the tiny tumblr feminist clique. It's so insignificant once you leave the internet bubble.

We're talking about human nature here.
The clear threats are the simple ones - People like those on Tumblr just give them justification, because most people are too busy to stop and look at the big picture of an issue when there's a convenient and very vocal minority of idiots to mistake the majority for. I don't even think Fox News has made a single laughably ridiculous piece on Tumblr though I dream of the day regularly
to talk about human nature one needs to understand it no one in real life 90% gives a flying fuck about tumblr and what it thinks
10% is still pretty high up there.
Also remember that tumblr is a mostly American (and British?) phenomenon. I don't think I've ever seen or heard of Tumblr feminists in Belgium except for tech-savvy internet people like me and my friends making fun of them.
The clear threats are the simple ones - People like those on Tumblr just give them justification, because most people are too busy to stop and look at the big picture of an issue when there's a convenient and very vocal minority of idiots to mistake the majority for. Thinking that a bunch of teen girls posting about homestuck is responsible for misinforming 300 million Americans about the nature of feminism is stupid. If you are opposed to misogyny then complain about misogynists; it's nobody's fault but theirs. Thinking that funny, likely fake posts you saw reposted onto imgur are more responsible for cultural attitudes towards feminism than all of the cable news outlets and politicians and businesses which have vested interests in maintaining the status quo is fucking batshit crazy, pal.

They are fake/"satirical" posts made by anti-SJ trolls which are then seen by other anti-SJ assholes, whose immediate response is usually "hhaha, look at this dumb sjw!!" because they can't tell the difference between legitimate posts and the drivel trolls put out.
Oh it's okay guys, they think the issues are resolved, feminism can go away now. If the issues aren't resolved, they should care, and a major aspect of feminism today is bringing the fact that women still have a bad deal to light, rather than let it slip away. Why should the name of the cause change? A vast majority of gender related issues are faced by women still, it just so happens that by tackling those issues the male part of the population will also see benefits. It's a largely female focus with the added benefit of positive effects for the male side too.
No fucking shit they aren't resolved. But people think they do because women can vote. The name should change because (I already said this but you have a habit of not reading) it implies it's only about women. Spoilers: It isn't. This is gender equality, not women's rights. Men won't just happen to benefit, modern feminism is for them as well. If the name reflects that, more people that don't spend all day on the internet will understand it and support it.
*radical overzealous "feminism" Women are still getting underpaid and shit, but the issue is the extremist freaks proclaiming that all men are pigs etc. We need feminism, we just need to ditch the vocal minority.
The word feminism itself is biased. We need egalitarianism.
The word feminism itself is biased. We need egalitarianism.

Did you know that the term "slave" comes from "slav", because the slavic peoples were commonly forced into slavery during the middle ages? Of course by the 19th century slavery was seen by the western world as being primarily applied to black people. My point here is that semantics like that are pointless.

No fucking shit they aren't resolved. But people think they do because women can vote. If the name reflects that, more people that don't spend all day on the internet will understand it and support it.
But what would changing the name actually change? People who don't care about feminism now aren't likely to care about feminism under any other name. The people who don't like it because it's called feminism but would if it isn't called feminism are just feminists who think too highly of themselves. Considering the crux of the movement is getting women equal with men first and foremost, it's still a very fitting name. It focuses on womens issues, so it makes sense for it to be named as such. The effects and discussion on mens issues is not a core focus for most people in the movement because it's such a minor point. Changing the name is just trying to ignore a ton of history all in the name of "eww I don't like the sound of it". The movement has done so much and has a lot of force behind it because of its history, changing the name changes that a bit. It creates a disconnect of sorts. "Oh, who are these "equalists"? Never heard of those guys, fuck that."

I love how this is on the internet, but people are downplaying the vocal retards. Feminism never engages in damage control, it consistently ignores half the population. I don't care what planet or realm of high bullshit you reside in. The platform is never explained unless you pull teeth. Don't even get me started on how it fucking fragmented and weakened to a point where MRAs are a thing.
The word feminism itself is biased. We need egalitarianism.
Feminism is egalitarianism and, in our society and most of the societies in the world, women are the ones most in need of egalitarian progress. Out of all of the fights for progress in the world to pick, bickering over the name of a movement has to be the least important one.
Can't we all just get along? But seriously, there are two types of feminism. "Stop oppressing me with how you sit on the bus and all men are rapists" feminism and "women should have the same rights as men" feminism. I believe this is more of a response to the first kind than the second.
The clear threats are the simple ones - People like those on Tumblr just give them justification, because most people are too busy to stop and look at the big picture of an issue when there's a convenient and very vocal minority of idiots to mistake the majority for. We need egalitarianism.
i don't want to be known as an egalitarian, the vocal minority of egalitarians on facepunch are pedantic pseudo-intellectuals who don't actually give a shit about equality they just want to shit on feminism. yes i am being purposefully ironic!
