Maybe I'm wrong, that's possible but stuff like this sounds alright to me (aside from that grammar)
Ah, you mean the tumblr post. I was just looking at the article.
Yeah, some of them are just against radical feminism. Sadly, that's not most of them.

"I'm not feminist because I'm a feminist."
Huh. Well, I can actually understand where they're coming from. They're ironically misunderstanding what feminism is - or at least is supposed to be - but at least they're still being respectful and saying "if you like feminism, go ahead" rather than complaining about 'sluts'.
Oh and then there's this, which was on the twitter tag for some reason:

Comparing feminism to right wing political parties makes sense. The craziest people get elected to represent the movement despite most of the people belonging to the movement being reasonable people only interested in limiting government spending.
it doesn't make sense because feminism is not an organized movement that elects "leaders"
The pay gap thing always confused me,
I would assume there is a statistical gap in pay between men and women because more women are unemployed as a result of them being married, having kids, etc. You know, nuclear family roles.
A woman applying for the same position as a man would not get paid 77 cents (or whatever the arbitrary value was this week) less for the same work.
I assumed that it was because there were less women in the field. I thought it was unlikely for them to be underpaid since businesses would be inclined to hire them more. Similar to what they do with outsourcing.
Except that these twitter posts are highly misinformed about what feminism is and instead takes a very, VERY small minority of feminists on tumblr posting dumb shit as the new face of the feminist movement. Most of these posts reflect a sheltered, middle class upbringing so no shit they would feel as they do, but the fact of the matter is that feminism is objectively beneficial to the social, economic and political stature of women.
Also, it's dumb to exclude 50% of the population from the argument of gender equality.

Because most of what people dislike about it are often misconceptions based on what teenagers are saying on tumblr which is hardly representative of feminism as a whole. See:
"Femenists want to destroy men, not be equal with them!"
"Feminists shouldnt exist, we should be ~gender equalists~"
"Look at this cherrypicking I did on tumblr!"

This whole thing just goes to show that the movement is suffering from a pretty significant image problem at the moment.
The retards aren't representative of feminism as a whole, but they are representing feminism to a lot of people. It's all very well and good that we here know the it's just a vocal minority, but if everyone else doesn't know that, then there's a major issue.

Tumblr is little more than a boogeyman and a deflection when it comes to these things
[editline]4th August 2014[/editline]
But that's been explained quite a few times in this thread already.
So are facepunch feminists part of this small vocal minority too? Because I can't tell the fucking difference.

how does this 'tumblr boogeyman' stereotype even come into play here. do you seriously think these people hide under your bed at night, steal your milk cookies, and hiss "kill all men?". i don't get what your observance is even trying to do
Feminism has always had an image problem, it's got nothing to do with tumblr and has existed long before that.
The problem isn't the movement or the name or anything like that though, it's created by people who are worried about it and react negatively (like MRAs), and doing stuff like changing the name won't do anything to stop that.
Just because a problem has always existed, doesn't mean there's only one cause.
If people are only exposed to one aspect of feminism (screaming tumblr retards), they're who they associate with feminism.
There seems to be the idea that everyone already knows that the vocal minority is the minority, and therefore they can be ignored, but they are damaging the entire movement's image in the eyes of a lot of people.
I know a lot of people who are as much for equality as anyone, but they're loathe to call themselves a feminist, because the only connotation that word carries for them is man hating moron. There's no other figurehead.

Most of the people who are paying attention to tumblr for feminism are those that are using them to justify their views on feminism. Basically it is mostly people who are exposing themselves to that part of tumblr on purpose.
If it wasn't tumblr it would be some other thing, there will always be a minority of people in every type of group that can be focused on to justify some sort of world view or another.
The only reason why tumblr seems big is because a good amount of people on facepunch post stuff about tumblr. For me personally I don't ever go to tumblr and the only times I ever read anything about tumblr is on facepunch when people post about it. Tumblr is almost non-existent to me because I don't expose myself to a lot of it.
Lastly, I'll ask, what can anyone do about it? What can any of us do about people posting stupid shit on tumblr? We already say that the stupid things that are said on tumblr are stupid, what more is supposed to be done? Are we supposed to go to them and tell them to stop posting? If people are determining their whole world view of feminism based on tumblr, than they probably were already in the mindset to not like feminism before that. You can't convince everyone.
I bet if you asked an average person you ran into on the street what tumblr was, they'd probably respond with "What's a tumblr?" People are vastly over-estimating the reach it has.
I just kinda glanced at this thread for the first time in a week. I'm gonna point out what I usually have to in these threads: tumblr is not exclusively a social network for SJWs. Sure, you're likely to see some feminism and somewhat-questionable activism from time to time, but it's not a common thing if you don't follow blogs that don't post about it. I could make an account on tumblr and only follow blogs that post pictures of flowers, and I'll never see anything but flowers on tumblr. The tumblr stereotype is the annoying group of reclusive social justice bloggers who avoid basic human interaction out of fear of oppression, and they've managed to convince each other that their radical ideas are so astoundingly true that they must be spread everywhere.
sorry for the text wall ,it's 1 AM

You do know that tumblr isn't the only source of the "feminazi" stereotype? People who've never heard of tumblr will be aware of that stereotype, even if they don't agree with it.

Sure, lots of people like to promote that idea as a way to disparage feminism, similar to how "bra burning" is somehow a thing to some people.
What are we even arguing about at this point though, that negative baseless stereotypes exist? What can be done to combat these ideas? Saying they're not real won't work because the people who hold them already have a negative view in their heads that they don't want to change.
Feminism has a horrible image problem, and pretending it's only a vocal minority that is misconstruing the movement's goals and believing that they can safely be ignored is not going to help gender equality. Average every day people are misunderstanding the movement, and when they hear "feminism" they associate it with man hating and stay-at-home women being somehow wrong, instead of associating it with gender equality. Hell, people who have no clue about anything the movement stands for instantly assume based on the name that it's a women's movement only. There doesn't seem to be many groups attempting to reach out and explain the movement to those ignorant of it, and the only people really learning about feminism are those that seek it out and those who go to college/university.

I don't know what can be done; personally, I was arguing against the idea that there's nothing should be done because the only people who pay any attention to the vocal minority are redpill MRA idiots.
Tumblr in general is just a soapbox for terrible people.
Real fast know I said I was done (and I really will be after this) but got linked to this, just to clarify the girls in the OP

This is apparently what they're against and they're right. This thread is a prime example of the first part though so I expect it to be ignored.
Edit: I suggested it on the other page but really, make a mass debate for this thing or discuss the tumblr vs tumblr movement going on, c'mon now.

don't forget they're also against sluts being able to walk around shamelessly

You might want to avoid telling people what they're for and against.

weird thing to say considering that's the whole point of this #womenagainstfeminism thing isn't it?
this is the best thing ever

While I agree that "true feminism" is about equality, the word seems to have "branched out" over time, and it has a much broader meaning in public today than before. The definition of the word is still the same, and all misandrists are using the word wrongly, but since so many of the misandrists call themselves feminists I have stopped to identify myself as one.
When people ask me if I am a feminist, I usually answear with something like: No, but I am for gender equality. Then, the person asking usually points out that that is the definiton of a feminist, thinking that I have no idea of what I'm talking about. Why do you have to decree that you are for gender equality by using a special and widely misunderstood term when the words "I am for gender equality" suffices?
weird thing to say considering that's the whole point of this #womenagainstfeminism thing isn't it?
Unless I'm misreading this myself, Sgt-NiallR means "Stop telling people what they (the said people) believe in" and you read it as "Stop telling people what anti-feminists believe in."
On a separate note, a few observations about that picture:
- Patriarchal culture has been a focus of serious feminism for over half a century so I don't see why it's included in the latter column.
- The purple text implies that all feminists go against the very definition of feminism and fit into the latter column, that's a load of nonsense.
- "Let me tell you how to be a real man"? This one's completely hypocritical. Feminism supports equality for both sexes. Patriarchal culture pushes for defined gender roles ("real men") whilst feminism pushes against them. The idea is that both men and women shouldn't have to conform to traditional gender roles. It's not supposed to be a requirement for how men behave, it's just pushing for an acceptable alternative to the old fashioned belief of how they "should" act.
Whoever made that picture is against feminism as a whole, it's pretty much written right there. Clearly they're too thick-headed to look beyond a vocal minority they've seen online because apparently all feminists fit into that category. I wouldn't expect anything more from somebody who fails to do basic fact-checking.
