I'm not familiar with NC gun laws, but I'm sure it's okay to open carry a firearm. He was in the parking lot too, and AFAIK, you can even enter the airport carrying, provided you don't go too far past a certain point.
It sounds like to me that this guy was doing nothing wrong, and someone saw him with a gun and freaked out due to the president being there. That's why they charged him with a bullshit charge, because he wasn't doing anything wrong.
It wasn't smart for him to go to the airport with his gun visible, but being dumb isn't a crime.

Actually, according to the 25th Amendment, the President appoints a successor to the position of VP, who is then approved by Congress. That's how Gerald Ford got in as Veep.
