I mean there are plenty of non switchblade knives that act very similarly and haven't been made illegal I don't see a reason to make switchblades illegal, it's fucking stupid the whole reason they are, but there's plenty of alternatives is what I'm saying For instance: This is the knife I carry around at the moment, only with a straight edge: [img_thumb]http://www.crocblades.com/images/products/SW3001B.jpg[/img_thumb] On it is a little bit that you use your thumb to flip the blade out, and it locks open with a piece of metal that bends under the blade. You use your thumb to push that in and close the knife... All easy and fast with one hand. That's just an example, but works just as well. You can use your thumb to barely open the blade as you flick your wrist and it just opens and locks
Why do you carry a knife around? They are too dangerous to be used as self defence weapons, better off using a taser or baton/pepper spray. Even with that being said I don't know why they would ban a type of knife and yet you can still carry a loaded assault rifle.
Sweet, now I can rob people with my switchblade!
most people on FP are going to get killed/beaten up pretty badly if they pull a knife anyway
A lot of us worked retail bro A few years of case cutting boxes of soup cans and you're practically a gladiator One time I threw a box into the air and cut the tape along the bottom before I caught it again and collapsed it down one-handed like a pro
most people on FP are going to get killed/beaten up pretty badly if they pull a knife anyway how many people on here that carry a knife actually know how to use it properly under possibly life threatening circumstances I just don't see the point in carrying a knife for "self defense." pulling one will probably just escalate the situation.
So much this. I carry a knife but I would never consider using it for defense. I dont really understand why people associate carrying a knife with defense, when the primary use is utility. It takes years of training to get good at knife fighting and even then its still insanely dangerous. I think the spirit of this law is more or less making the UTILITY of the knife easier to access for amputees, not so much make it easier to defend themselves, as many people here seem to think. Even though (like gunfox said) assisted openers made the law obsolete quite some time ago.
Too bad they're banned throughout the entire US.
:ssh:
Who wants to fight with a 2 inch little razor.
A small razor can still do a lot of damage. I've seen footage of inmates that made weapons with a single razor from a disposable shaving razor and attack someone. I've seen someone take the razor out of a disposable razor and use in a attempted suicide. Nearly died, we found him in time to save his life.

[editline]11th April 2011[/editline]
still carry a loaded assault rifle.
The fuck is an "assault" rifle you mean a gun that looks like an M-16?
but a boxcutter is pretty impractical as i said before, who wants to hike with a box cutter.
MR-X wasn't talking about utility or hiking, he was explaining the power of even a small razor when used as a weapon.
The fuck is an "assault" rifle you mean a gun that looks like an M-16?
Um, what? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle
this is clearly a ploy to get dangerous weapons in the hand of the nation's one-armed children. i mean really, a knife in an emergency? what kind of emergency is that? one where you need to stab someone? one where you need to peel a potato? everyone knows in an emergency you call 911, not get a knife out.
Yeah its such a great idea to pull your phone out, open the phone app, and then type 911 rather than defend yourself from some guy with a steak knife [editline]11th April 2011[/editline] oh wait I didn't see the first part its sarcasm disregard this
Saw 'Maine FINALLY legalizes switchblades-' just before I closed my ITN tab, and came back ready to fire off my "why the fuck would you need one, anyway" before reading the full title. Good news, though.
that's great!

One armed knifeman with a butterfly knife would be pretty badass.
You are always going to get cut in a knife fight, always. It's about damage control. You use your dominant arm to fight with and the other arm to block attacks to the head or torso. So a one-armed man in a knife fight is like a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest. There have been scenarios with marshal arts masters pitted against novices with knifes coated with an ink that smears on contact. The masters always came out with ink on them.
I don't really see the necessity for switchblades in this case. Of all the knives I've carried, I've been able to open all of them with one hand after a day or two of use. That being said, I really don't understand the banning of switchblades in the first place. A knife is a knife, and I don't think the lack of a spring loaded blade is really going to stop someone who really wants to shank somebody.

Switchblades are easily concealable, and don't take up much space. 2. It's also generally, unlike a flip knife, bladed on both sides and generally have little utility outside of fighting.
