Even though the example you listed makes much more logical sense and would be much more interesting/dynamic for high level players (i.e. "Oh awesome! Now that I am head of fighters guild I have people asking me to do SWEET QUESTS!").

No diagonal running animations is a legitimate complaint. It makes all the NPCs look stiff as fuck and it ruins the immersion unless they're walking straight forward.
