Gamescom 2014: Microsoft Caught Using – Once Again – PCs
Lol Windows have like a "every other OS" routine where it goes good and bad.
8 - BAD
Windows 8 is an objectively faster, more efficient and feature packed version of Windows 7 and it's difficult to take you seriously when you're using OS X.
Developers don't trust the console they're developing for with being stable enough for a demo. Maybe they should just not develop on them if it's such an issue damn
Maybe its just my experience but 8 is a pretty big hate-fest in my area. Nobody likes it around here and everybody has stayed with their Windows 7 waiting for the one after.
guess what: that doesn't mean it's bad
Nobody's annoyed just because they're using PCs. It just pisses people off when they refuse to release games for PC because 'the conversion would be too complex', when it's clear that most Xbox games already work on PC with very few changes.
I don't remember people complaining about Wii U demo units running off Linux

Here at facepunch we don't kick people when they're down
The screen is only meant to be playing a video. They wouldn't use a Windows license just to continuously stream a video as using free software
I am 100% sure that I played a Rayman Legends demo off that screen when it was available
The consoles are fucking PCs anyway. Hell the Xbox One runs a derivative of windows 8.
I don't think this could mean any less.

Whether it was that screen or not, it's a common practice.
Look, here's Sony doing it.

But of course let's hate on Micro$haft being evil and literally Hitler, right?
You're telling me halo was on a PC
you're telling me there's a chance
Most Halo titles are playable on the PC, that's not the issue the issue is Microsoft being stupid.

They are a large incentive to buy an Xbox. And it works, otherwise it would be on PC.
Is that really a big surprise? I assume every game is first developed on a PC and then optimized for its release platform. Just because the unoptimized alpha runs on a PC doesn't mean they're hiding an optimized, polished consumer-ready PC version from the public.
Or do you expect them to code with a gamepad?
On a PC that really doesn't matter.
It does, but not necessarily in terms of raw power.
Nvidia and AMD cards have very different performance weights which means they excel at different tasks.
Nvidias cards are a lot faster when shading simple geometry with many textures while AMD cards do complex geometry with complicated shaders better.
(Or at least that was the case a few years ago, no idea if the distinction is still as strong.)
The only game proven to be running on a pc is an indie game that wouldn't have had time to be offloaded to the console before gamescom (if it's even ready to run on a dev kit at this point).
Who the hell cares.
I like how you conveniently skipped Windows 2000 to make the theory work.
In reality it's this:
Windows 98 - Good
Windows 2000 - Good
Windows ME - Unstable, bad
Windows XP - Good
Windows Vista - Rocky launch, ended up good once driver support took off
Windows 7 - Good
Windows 8 - Good
Windows 8.1 - Good
No the theory still works
Windows 95 was good
No one liked 98
98l lite was good since it axed IE
2000 was good
ME sucked
XP was good
Vista continues to piss me off to this day so I dont know what you're talking about
7 was good
As for windows 8 it screwed a few things for me but I cant really say overall whether it was good or bad

98lite wasn't made by Microsoft, 98SE was the version people like.
Who's going to go out and buy a $399 box when they can get a 360 off ebay for like $100 and play Halo 3 + Reach + ODST + Halo 1: Anniversary for significantly cheaper?
Because there are a lot more people playing the newer version than the older versions
You're telling me halo was on a PC
you're telling me there's a chance
Yeah how do you think they make Halo?
They are a large incentive to buy an Xbox. And it works, otherwise it would be on PC.
You know what would work better for them profit wise? If they release the MCC + ODST and Reach on the PC. It's been 7 years since Halo 2 released on the PC, and the demand for it's return is still HUGE.
This is standard practice to ensure a smooth demo experience for them. There's no "desperate attempt to hide" anything.
So, the consoles are unstable? And these games could easily run on a Windows environment?
This doesn't even constitute as news really. This is probably the 15th instance I've seen this happening over the past few years. Honestly I'm so desensitized to this practice that I really don't care anymore.
this is not news by a long shot, literally everyone does this and people get uptight about it because they don't understand how fucking conventions work
Who's going to go out and buy a $399 box when they can get a 360 off ebay for like $100 and play Halo 3 + Reach + ODST + Halo 1: Anniversary for significantly cheaper?
Adding onto that, if you already have an average PC, why would you drop 400$ for Xbone when their "exclusives" will end up on the PC anyway? (TitanFall, Dead Rising, Ryse, etc.)
Grab a PS4 and have the best of both worlds. (Wii U if you feel inclined.)
And hell, if you prefer the Xbox controller for whatever reason, just buy the controller.
On a PC that really doesn't matter.
Prepare for hate.
Isn't this incredibly common? I'd imagine it's easier to fix a game if it's unfinished if it's running on a PC during a show. I remember when watch dogs was being shown off, they even said it was a PC even though the ingame prompts were for playstation
I love when people throw a tantrum like "SEE, IT WORKED ON A COMPUTER AT ONE POINT" like console games are totally developed using the console itself
I can't help but remember those circa 2000 gaming college commercials

(Collins College still actively hunts down copies of the video to try and delete but I guess adding mario to the end created a parody loophole to prevent it from getting taken down)

You are completely missing my point.
For that particular low-end game, it doesn't matter at all.
