He meant to say ARM.

Also, I wonder if the Pro version has an active digitizer for the pen input, if so it'd be a pseudo-Cintiq if the pressure levels and resolution are good enough.
So, I was looking at this asus tablet. Can't remember the model name. But its got a quad core tegra 3 in it. It any good?

You mean the ASUS Transformer Prime? Yeah it's good.
So wait, the pro version has both a pen and touch capabilities, or am I missing something?
I thought the keyboard on the surface was not bundled

yup
even worse, this is apparently the price of the lower-end version. so you're getting a portable albeit pretty shitty computer for the same price as a good computer.
this is ridiculously overpriced.
wait what
this isn't the price of the one with the i5
so much for this thing
You could buy a relatively-good PC with that kind of money, so why the fuck would you spend it on a tablet?
compared to a laptop, that isn't terribly priced
You mean the ASUS Transformer Prime? Yeah it's good.
Actually the prime sucks
The 300t is good, but its a lower end model (i.e. it has no gorilla glass, plastic, etc but it still has an underclocked Tegra 3).
The Prime gets terrible WiFi and GPS due to the metal backing. They are coming out with a replacement for it this summer, I think called the 700t, which is exactly like the Prime except it actually gets good wifi/GPS
iOS's thousands of apps is nothing compared to the number of applications that can be natively run on windows 8.
Except the $600 Surface that people are talking about is the ARM one, and so there are currently no apps that will run on it(except for whatever showcase ones are currently on the store/ come with Windows 8)
Apple fanboys would buy Idirt for 600 dollars with an apple tag on, Microsoft is not as lucky with their costumer sentiment as Apple.

...Well yeah, that's basically the definition of a fanboy :v:.
This is kinda a letdown in any case, you'd think MS could cut the price seeing as they don't have to pay windows licensing fees. Maybe they're just trying not to fuck over their competitors but who knows. Either way, some people in the thread are mixing this up with the Pro version - this is the iPad like tablet that still runs windows 8, but the ARM version that isn't backwards compatible for technical reasons. The Pro version is the one that has the i5.
Still though, the Windows RT version should build up a library pretty quick, because all future apps written for windows 8 -should- be done in a way that'll run on both. Fingers crossed.

With what it can do yeah it is
Well, that's a guaranteed failure. If people have $600 to spend on a tablet, they buy an iPad.
Looks like Microsoft's outrageous OS licensing fees are going to fuck them again. Meanwhile, Android has no licensing fees to drive up their tablet prices...
let's wait though. and if we wait long enough the first-gens might get really cheap (when gen 2 rolls around)
If everybody waits for Gen 2 pricedrops, there will be no Gen 2.
Are you kidding me? I could buy a better laptop with that money for the same fucking price.
Fuck, for 600$, you could build a whole damn desktop, and a pretty decent one, too.

They don't have to pay licensing fees, this IS a microsoft product. That's why some of their competitors felt shafted, because microsoft can sell a tablet for cheaper as they don't have to pay licensing fees. Same goes for apple of course.
I bought my transformer pad for 749, so its better than it looks
I think this is too highly priced.
I have a small amount of disposable income, and I have to really justifiy what I spend it on.
The i5 Surface is a VERY desirable piece of hardware, but at that price I can't justify spending that much on it. I have to think of what I Need vs what I want and if the thing that I want is of reasonable price I would very much consider buying one.
i just payed £606 for a laptop with i5, 650M and 8gb RAM. I don't think I could bring myself to buy something that is more expensive with less of a gain to me. (It would be more of a toy.)
600 bucks? I could buy a Model-T Ford back in the day for that price...
BACK IN MY DAY....
Fuck, for 600$, you could build a whole damn desktop, and a pretty decent one, too.
I dunno man, the last time I decided to use my desktop on the bus I got a lot of strange looks from my fellow passengers.
I find it hilarious how people are complaining that they could buy a desktop for that price.
They're two different things. People might not want to be sat at a fucking desk all the time. I spent £350 on a tablet and I use it every day, it's more portable than a laptop and is often easier to do certain tasks with.

I've bought a better laptop for less. Two years ago.
[editline]23rd June 2012[/editline]
Note: Its a monster of a laptop so I wouldn't want to carry it everywhere. But still, if Surface really is $600...
Isn't the surface that table thing?

I hate to interrupt your badly thought out snark, but I wasn't saying that you should, I was using it to illustrate how overpriced this is.
Isn't the surface that table thing?
They changed the name of that
iOS's thousands of apps is nothing compared to the number of applications that can be natively run on windows 8.
Unfortunately, the ARM version only runs applications compiled for Windows 8, so on launch day you aren't going to be rolling in that many applications.

The capabilities of the surface is totally different though. You can't compare laptop and desktop hardware to a tablet. For £600 I could get a pretty powerful desktop as well, but I wouldn't be able to carry it around like a laptop. Don't compare apples to oranges.

Read the thread. This is NOT the i5 version. This is the Windows RT. Windows Pro = i5.
But this can use windows applications no?
