U.S. Government Shutdown Threat: Budget Deal Remains Unreached

End of the tyrannical American government is immanent. I suggest buying rifles and plenty of ammo to fend off looters.
What is a "government shutdown"?
It means the federal government doesn't have the authority to pay its bills. Vital services will still be paid for.
Can someone please explain what's the point of having a government shut down?
There is no point. You want to avoid one.
There is no point. You want to avoid one.
Isn't this punishing the wrong people though? As far as I've heard, most politicians make most of their money from having ties/investments with companies.
WBC will be over this
"God hates jobs".
this is kinda like a anarchist wet dream except the vital services will still be online
Actually our higher ups have pretty much told us we wouldn't get paid. We'll probably get back pay, but if there isn't a budget, then there's no allocated money for personel.
We will get backpay. From what I've heard and read... we're getting half a check (April 1-8) and then the shit will hit the fan and pay will stop. Everything will shut down that's non essential. Dining facilies, security forces will still be operational. (Thank god I'm living on this AFB so I get free food/housing).
Either way this is bullshit. They're making more of a mess by shutting the government down.. what about late fees, shitty credit? The list goes on. I know my shop isn't happen. We get fucked over enough as it is, this is gonna make a lot of people angry. Sure if you're sitting at a desk most of the time like some Air Force jobs it might not be bad but working 12 hour shifts fixing aircraft while your financial situations explodes isn't gonna get shit done real fast. I know I'm safe, but a lot of people are screwed.

There will be no money to pay us (servicemen) in the event of a shutdown. We will earn money, and will be backpaid, but we will not get paid on 15 Apr 2011 unless it goes through.
many agencies and parts of the government(federal jobs) shut down to save money
for example, temporary removal of the IRS
Who's the IRS?

I'm not American.

That is the problem with democracies. Dumb people have a say in stuff. See, when I control my own land mass. I will rule with tough love. Give citizens freedom, but certain portions of the government will be off limits to anyone but me and trusted officials.
How about... lowering military budget...!
"GREAT IDEA HOLE!"
Why do you hate freedom?
Il remember you when the commies take over!
Looks like my dad is going to be out of work for a while. He's a non-essential federal employee, so we'll be living off of one paycheck.
Should be "fun".

You have no idea how a government shutdown works.

I think this guy is joking.
A lot of teenagers are freaking out about this for some odd reason.
It really only affects federal and government employees and institutions, afaik. Schools won't be closed down or anything and retail jobs will be fine. The kids freaking out all over Twitter and Facebook are getting ridiculous.
Although I've only read a little on this, so I'm not sure on all the details.
I can see why some are, my friend's parents are non-essential employees, they're getting 0 income for as long as this goes on.
Incoming Shitstorm
:munch:
In all seriousness though, I'd advise any FPer's who are in the US to get a good weapon to defend yourselves with, just in case.

Why? Police will still be around. It's not like the government shutting down means laws don't exist anymore.

Well, obviously there still going to be around, but then again, you can't always rely on them.
Here's a helpful solution: suspend pay to the congress, who got us into this mess.
[editline]7th April 2011[/editline]
Or instead, continue to let them dictate how much they'll be getting paid.
It affects people like me, who work for uncle sam. If i remember correctly a bill was passed that would allow for the continued payment of military personell, but alot of folks including myself are still unsure. I'm going to be pissed if I don't get paid on the 15th.
I wonder how long this will go on for.
This is just a question somewhat unrelated to OP's thing.
Why don't we have a government that has each person directly voting on things, as opposed to hiring representatives?
This is just a question somewhat unrelated to OP's thing.

because the logistics of getting a country of 260 million people to actually be educated on what something is and does and be able to have a reasonable vote on it is beyond impossible
getting 50-60 old white men together to vote on something still comes out with a lot of bullshit.

There is just so many reasons that can go horribly wrong it isn't even funny
