U.S. Government Shutdown Threat: Budget Deal Remains Unreached
There is just so many reasons that can go horribly wrong it isn't even funny
Not really, it's just slow and inefficient. A direct democracy would work in smaller communities, but on the national level it would be a logistical nightmare.

It's a security issue, it's hardly a logistical issue in that with computers it's probably relatively easy but that's beside the point. It's also an issue of mob rule. Direct "Democracy" without limits would destroy any nation irrevocably. If you want to use the term "Direct Republic" i really can't see it turning out any better. Do you really want a majority of citizens in the United States writing amendments to the constitution? Even if they didn't write them could you trust them to vote for the minorities rights? (Talking about the minority of people, not the "minority" race) It's been proven by history time and time again that the majority mob rule destroys it's own rights faster then any group of squabbling elected officials could in the same time frame.
It isn't a perfect system, but mob rule is just a step backward into failed governance.
Imagine the majority of United States citizens voting on gay rights. It isn't doing as great in the United States as other countries but it's doing a fuck of a lot better than if we let the majority decide.
I really hope this does not happen, with the government shutting down.
this is kinda like a anarchist wet dream except the vital services will still be online
Nah, there's still large corporations and people are still lazy.
even if it doesn't effect your budget directly. IE you don't work for the government, it still effects the economy with so many people being temporally with out work and pay.
Nah, there's still large corporations and people are still lazy.
there's also police.
this is really far from my idea of an anarchist wet dream
I think this guy is joking.
I think 'your' joking. :smug:
Government shutdown won't help one bit.
This shutdown isn't gonna be good how bout they just put in some hard hours and do their job.
Because they ran out of time.
Because they ran out of time.
You're a fucking moron...you know that right?
IT'S THE DAMN BONER IN OBAMA'S ASS THAT IS TOO BIG TO BUDGE AT ALL, YOU JACKASS!
My family lives off of veteran's benefit checks because my dad can't work, and my mom doesn't have a stable job (substitute teacher).
Can anyone with a bit more knowledge of this tell me if this'll affect me very much?
Update on budget talks.
Minimal progress, talks will continue throughout the night, hopefully there is a good answer in the morning.

The majority of Americans actually support gay marriage.
The majority of Americans actually support gay marriage.
I still believe that's because most of the people against it were too stupid to operate a phone to complete the survey correctly
lol "when"
good luck
He'll build floating islands and rule the sky.
that is if he somehow manages to conquer my sky land first

That or they only use messenger pigeons for communication.
Actually our higher ups have pretty much told us we wouldn't get paid. We'll probably get back pay, but if there isn't a budget, then there's no allocated money for personel.
I think I am going to get all the money I have out of the bank and out of the credit union this is some bullshit.
Better to be safe than sorry.
Maybe I should do the same for my mother.

From what I understand the Vet benefits checks will still go through. So you should be good, I'd double check though.
I'm not sure.
Like I said, I'm not clear on a lot of the details. I'm just repeating what I've read.
You sound like John Boehner.

Well Mr. Shadez can you explain to me on how that is a dumb idead? Instead of rating me dumb.

I don't follow politics a whole lot. Or at all really.
The only reason I'm particularly interested in this is because of the deal with my dad.
A lot of teenagers are freaking out about this for some odd reason.
It really only affects federal and government employees and institutions, afaik. Schools won't be closed down or anything and retail jobs will be fine. The kids freaking out all over Twitter and Facebook are getting ridiculous.
Although I've only read a little on this, so I'm not sure on all the details.
I'm freaking out about this because my dad works for the government and has a family to feed.
That's a legitimate reason to be worried about it, but I'm assuming you have some sort of knowledge of what's going to happen.
A lot of people don't and have no affiliation with a federal worker, and yet they're panicking about irrelevant issues over Facebook. I had a friend of mine come to me crying because she thought she was going to lose her job at a nearby restaurant because of it.
That's... just silly.
[editline]8th April 2011[/editline]
I'm actually not really freaking out that much because I'm not living at home and this won't really affect my living but it will affect my family so I'm worried about it.
Yeah, that's my point.
But then again when you mix kids, the internet, and a national crisis, things always get ridiculous.

You realize how pointless that would be right...? If the government does collapse (which is bullshit anyways..) the money will have NO VALUE unless it's in the form of precious metals or something of that sort.
This sucks for me because right now I have a scholarship from the military which pays for my housing, food, tuition, and other expenses. I just got an e-mail from them saying that the shut down may cause me to lose that income for who know how long.
I can't get a job because school is a full-time responsibility and my savings account is pretty low. I don't know what I can do...
WBC will be over this
"God hates jobs".
Lol I can see this happening
[editline]8th April 2011[/editline]
Does anyone know if government shutdown will affect military discount (IE tuition free) for colleges/universities?
Read my post above.
