Even if it was going to spread they should have amputated it at the hospital. He might have only had his hand amputated. No way I would do that if I was in his situation.

Humans survival instinct at its finest. Most of you saying "I wouldn't be able to get myself to do that" most likely would. Notice how if you think of getting in fights you're scared, but once you're actually fighting, fear goes away and in its place there's only the need to stay alive (not get hurt too badly)? Yeah, that's what would happen in the whole "Cut your arm off" instance.
