What would an alarm accomplish?
It would get the morticians to your house faster to collect your body

I suppose it is only courteous. I mean dead body stink really doesn't come out of upholstery and your neighbors would be awfully displeased by your corpse stinking up their homes.

innocent burglar is still alive though so it evens out and it's all OK in the end.
Right?

As long as it saves just one life!
Remember kids, if you miss, switching to your firearms is always faster than reloading!

Also, aim for the limbs!

Shoot their limbs for more damage! Don't forget it!

it is, especially for revolvers
I don't know about Vice President Biden, but I am much more comfortable using a carbine than I am a shotgun. I have put thousands of rounds through carbines, but I have actually never fired a shotgun before. I am much more effective with a carbine in my hands than a shotgun, and thus it would be safer and more efficient for me to use one rather than a shotgun that I am unfamiliar with.
i think it's silly for someone who has never & most likely will never deal with any sort of home-invasion or burglary or anything that people with legitimate self defense concerns have to or could have to deal with is telling others how best to defend themselves. 'if you want to protect yourself, live in a mansion far away from any sort of crime ridden areas and become a politician who is defended by secret service agents at all times it's that simple'

Yeah, fucking poor people, just quit being lazy pieces of poor shit while I sit here and be a lazy piece of rich shit. God I hate those lazy poor people, it's their fault we have these problems.
Hey I get away with not having anything to defend my home but a knife, that means nobody else should have anything but knives! Right? Riiiiight? :I

what?
What kills me is, for those who have never handled a full sized rifle/shotgun indoors before; you don't understand how massively unwieldy it is and how you cannot maintain sighting and turn in hallways/smaller rooms at all.
A handgun's size is what gives it such a great edge in home defense. It is easily brought around, sighted, put around corners, or held safely away while your free hand operates things like doors, locks and etcetera. Even if you're stuck with a low capacity, compact 1911 clone - you still have six or seven shots and the ability to reload in only a second or two. Please, tell me how easy it is to break open a double-barrel and exchange two shells.
Even if I lived in a spacey area, I still wouldn't be fond of a shotgun. Yes, the pump ones have that classic racking noise, and yes, they're big guns. But for what? You fire bird shot, the guy is in pain, but maybe not down; and you've royally fucked up anything behind him. Same goes with buck; though it's certainly going to fare better than birdshot. Finally, you have slugs; which would certainly stop someone. But so would plain old hollow-points. Or a rifle. Or a tazer.
People with no firearm knowledge: Shotguns aren't a hallway clearing super device. Depending on the choke used (and even with the absolutely most inaccurate configurations) it would still be possible to miss a human target in a small hallway with buck or bird shot. Especially if the gun sighted like garbage; or in this panic we call adrenaline, you shoot too early.
There's no definite "best home defense" weapon because everyone's respective homes, firearm training, and mindsets are different. Biden can shove a shotgun up his ass for all I care; I sleep a lot happier with a pistol by my side, a good alarm system, and a locked bedroom door. :v:
Pretty sure a shot of 12ga buck to center mass at point blank is going to kill just as surely as a slug, without risking overpenetration. There are also relatively short shotguns or pistol-gripped ones that are usable for home defense, although nowhere near as wieldy as a pistol. Just some food for thought.

12 gauge buck (larger than #4) overpenetrates, #4 or smaller rarely has enough power to kill
