iPod classic 160gb is THE best mp3 player as far as I'm concerned.

Best mp3 player ever.
The ear buds that come with the clip are pretty shit, but the player itself is great.
I used to have one of these kicking around, was great because i just needed to plug a line in to record music, although i would always record of the radio so i would miss the first bit of every song whilst i ran to plug it in. Still got it somewhere gathering dust with my walkman casette player and cd player.

I remember a friend of mine knocking around with a minidisc player in 2003, at the time all I had was a portable cd player. It was considered the big thing.

hands down the biggest bang for the buck you can get right now
I've never understood why anyone cares about this
Audiobooks and lots of electronic music.
Kids these days. I remember when an MP3 player only had a display just to display track names. There was no menu and there was almost no settings. You loaded your shit, jacked in and pressed play.
But thanks to technological evolution, we don't have to have bleeding eyes struggling to read an unbacklit screen.

the only thing that would make it better would be if it used mini usb.
Up until 2010 I used this little 128 MB mp3 player that came with my Hi-Fi. The idea was you'd plug it into the top of the Hi-Fi and you could record whatever was playing onto the player. What really sucked about it was I had about 10 GB worth of music at the time, so I could only put my favorite, favorite songs on it.

Wow RIP
This may be interesting - the only MiniDisc-exclusive release was Gescom's "MiniDisc". It took advantage of the gapless song transitions so listeners could play it on shuffle and hear a unique endless song every time. They recently re-released it in digital formats, having it on shuffle in media player is pretty cool.
