Agreed, I thought the whole point of prison was that you committed a crime and as such relinquished your rights for the duration of the stay there.
Pretty soon prisons are just going to be long stay hotel rooms. :colbert:
Be? They are. The justice system in this country is a joke. Plasma screen TVs, Xboxs, PS3s etc etc. Combine that with pathetic sentences and now this. I'm genuinely ashamed.
It also things like this that make me question the EU sometimes. We are a sovereign country, but because of "Human Rights", we have to abolish things that have been practiced in this country for decades.
I mean, there are prisons in this country that allow prisoners OUT for a few hours a week for good behaviour. There was a huge uproar a few years ago because one of the inmates they let out happened to have been locked up for murdering 3 people with an axe. Pretty much sums up the justice system.
it's not more severe at all, it's simply what you lose when you go to prison. you can't vote, whether there's an election on or not.
Suppose for a moment that everyone that goes to jail must give their Saxophone to the government. Everyone gets the same punishment, so obviously this is fair, right? According to you, it doesn't matter that some people don't have a Saxophone, all that matters is that everyone has one taken away when they're punished.
Naturally, replacing "Saxophone" with "ability to vote" doesn't really change anything about what I said, and the idea remains absurd. Not everyone that is jailed has a Saxophone, just as not everyone that is jailed even has an opportunity to vote that ends up being affected.
Totally ignore my post, awesome. :keke:

well in the end i put up my main point a few posts up so whatever
in the end voting is still a plus side for those people so it still doesn't do any good to keep them away from jail
While that's a good decision, they should still be removed for the biggest crimes.
You can expect the BNP to get a lot more votes then
You can expect the BNP to get a lot more votes then
Cause all prisoners are racists right?

How in fucks name is voting a plus?
Cause all prisoners are racists right?
A lot of them.
if you commit a crime and end up in jail why should you get the right to vote
Exactly my thoughts. Even the governor benefits from keeping the prisoners longer inside. Everyone benefits! :v:
A lot of them.
Oh wow, you honestly believe that?

Yeah.
I've seen it first hand too.

With ever prisoner in the UK?
Or just one isolated group with no control standard?
Second one I bet.
Why not? Just because people are in jail does not make them bad people and a lot of laws are pretty poorly thought out and executed.
A lot of people who are in jail are a whole lot smarter than the general population who are mostly too stupid to understand what they are voting for anyway.
Voting should be limited to people who actually understand what they are voting for and understand the policies they are giving support for.
Shame it would be pretty difficult to implement this - would cut out a big chunk of the population but then they would all get butthurt and cry elitism.
Fuck them.
Oh, I love democracy.
To be honest, I think this is a bad idea. People say that being unable to vote is a breach of human rights - well, isn't locking someone up in the first place? Detention, restriction of activities and movement, monitoring, etc - these could also be regarded as breaching the rights of prisoners, but it's all part of the system. If you break a law, you lose some of your rights.

I don't think you should be allowed to vote then - first you say it is unfair for prisoners to not be allowed to vote, then you say only smart people should be allowed to.
Facepunch, why do you so often feel anyone who commits any crime is the scum of the Earth and deserves to be treated as such? I thought we did away with that at the end of the Dark Ages...
Why should people that are jailed be unable to vote? Is there a reason beyond "They broke da law!" that any of you actually have to revoke someone's ability to be represented by their government?
I killed your grandma LOL PUT ME IN A HOTEL AND GIVE ME A FREE JOB SO I'M SET FOR LIFE.

That's not how it works, they are for people who commit minor crimes. The worst the crime, the heavier the sentance and enviroment. Jail is not a place for punishment, but for redemption.

What is wrong with you ?

You really make bad arguments. They're in prison for a reason and theres a lot of hate crimes out there.

Not smart people, people who understand what they are voting for.

They already are here in the Netherlands.
They already are here in the Netherlands.
The people inside are not very friendly.
Not smart people, people who understand what they are voting for.
Still, my point still stands. You drift from saying no-one should be stopped from voting to saying only people within a certain category should be allowed to vote.
if you commit a crime and end up in jail why should you get the right to vote
Okay so you are in jail for illegally distributing marijuana. The law is bullshit.
But now you can't exercise your right to vote against it.
EVERYONE has a basic right to vote. I don't care if you are death row or a baby rapist. You have a right to vote.
It's awesome that the UK did this.
if you commit a crime and end up in jail why should you get the right to vote
because jail shouldn't be about punishment and because when it is it only exacerbates the crime problem, as proven by the American prison system

exactly. a prisoner is still a human being, and deserves not to be denied their inalienable rights
I'm all for this. Would help prevent the government from locking up whoever they don't like etc.
it's called punishment. if you break the fucking law, you get locked up and you learn your lesson
Rehabilitation is proven to work better than just throwing someone in a bare cell.
Honestly, no one knows how prisons work better than prisoners, so if something is wrong with the system, then prisoners could have a say in it.
i'm getting really tired of these sort of people, saying prisoners should have the right to vote and you shouldn't smack your kids in public and you can't do this and you can't do that
please kindly fuck off
[editline]3rd November 2010[/editline]

not being able to choose who leads your country is part of this. besides, if you give that to prisoners, people start going OH WELL WE SHOULD GIVE THEM HIGH QUALITY OF LIFE and other stupid bullshit
It gives the prisoners the opportunity to express their opinion on laws that they might not support. Can you say that you agree with all laws that are in place? What if you broke one of those laws you object against and you end up in prison, wouldn't it be a good thing to have the ability to vote against it?
