why do you care about how a phone looks??? it's in my pocket 90% of the day, and it's not like i look at anything but the screen anyway
Why wouldn't you?
Besides, aesthetics also carry a bit of functionality.
For example, the new S7 thats about to be released has a 5.1" screen, and its actually smaller than my M4 that has a 5.0", because the bezels on the M4 are huge.
Not only that, the 90º corners and same thickness around the whole device make it even bigger and unwieldier to me, because it isn't craddled in your hand due to being the same as carrying a piece of straight glass in your hand, unlike the S7 and other phones that aren't completely thin and offer a bit more thickness and curvature and less width.
Plus, camera humps are mostly bad for the outside camera housing because it makes it easier to scratch the outside. It probably won't rest on a table flat either, making it wobble around.
But if theres something I hate the most, its the fact that nearly all phone nowadays is 5.0" upwards, and the only phones that aren't, are Sony's Compact series that are nearly non existant here in Portugal, or severely gutted trash like the S4 mini, which is called S4 for no good reason.
Looks nifty, and I'm so glad LG is sticking with the removable battery. It infuriates me that both iPhone and Samsung S series stopped with that. (amusingly, the Unix epoch bug would be fixable on a iPhone if the battery was removable!)
I currently own a LG V10, got it a week after it came out. Actually never had something so brand new before so it was a nice change, was on a LG G2 Mini before. The camera is fucking incredible. I will say, the secondary screen is only really useful for telling time when the primary was off, it is simply too limited and nothing can take advantage of it.
Before the G2 Mini I had a Samsung S3, it was the most terrible phone I had ever owned. The GPS simply didn't work, the Bluetooth was awful in range and stability, and got a continously poor signal. I tried to flash it with a custom ROM to get rid of touchwiz but it appears the rumors with AT&T are true, the cellular antenna was burned out upon flashing to a new rom. On touchwiz, it had worse performance than my single core 500 MHz LG Optimus before it. Needless to say, I have a vendetta against Samsung now for how much frustration it's caused me.
Why the phone look discussion?
It's design looks like every phone of the last 2 years??

Hell it looks a lot like the One M8
I can guarantee when the drop test videos hit, you'll be seeing that thing on the bottom pop out constantly.
I'm not really an audiophile, but I like the fact that it comes with a Hi-Fi Audio DAC that can be used as a dedicated DAC and AMP.
With the Hi-Fi Plus, LG has worked with B&O PLAY to create a DAC audio player that includes 32-bit Hi- Fi DAC upsampling technology and 32-bit 384KHz high-definition audio playback. The LG Hi-Fi Plus can be used as a module with the G5 or as a stand-alone DAC for any computer or smartphone.
That's pretty fucking sweet.
Holy fuck is this real? That's some serious innovation for a new flagship. Maybe even a game changer. The whole modular thing looks awesome, and I'm loving the inter-connectivity with the home robot and other devices.
Extremely disappointed they switched away from the rear mounted power and volume buttons though. I actually grew to love that design. The ability to change the volume of your music while it's in your pocket without having to take it out is a huge +1
Sales would be down 40% if people found out it doesn't actually make a sick lock 'n' load sound when inserting a module
Now I really, really hope the phone makes a sound when you put a module in and take it out, and that it's customization just like ringtones and notification sounds, so I can make it the sound of a gun being loaded/racked.

Considering removing a module currently requires removal of the battery as well... and thus turning off the phone... I don't see that being possible.
Forget the phone, the rolling bot has a laser pointer!
Thats absolutely hideous, but at least its functional.
Looks like virtually every other smart phone ever.

I'd be smart if they had a small 200mAh battery in the phone to keep it powered during switching like some laptops have had.

because i don't look at anything else than the screen when i use it, the other parts don't have any use to me
and it would be nice with huge bezels, i keep pressing the edges of the screen when i hold it, an edge would be impossible for me to use

The first ad is fucking great tho. 360 part was pretty funny.

that bat powers the whole phone
switch modules > phone is rebooted

Top and bottom bezels?

That's actually an awesome idea.
Top and bottom bezels?
bezels all around, preferably so the screen sinks down, so i don't have to be paranoid about placing it on the screen side
i mean, when i hold my phone with a firm grip, the part below my thumb touches the side of the screen sometimes and messes up the touches
Removing the bottom to swap modules also pulls out the battery and kills power to the phone. Going through Android's entire
boot process every time you swap modules means you won't want to do it often.
Swapping bottom pieces is definitely an innovative feature, though,
and LG even mentioned having some kind of open hardware ecosystem for third parties.
At least this one doesn't seem to have as nasty of a curve as the G4, and they didn't place the camera right at the peak of said curve. Dropped my G4 once and the camera was immediately fucked.

I really like the curve of my G4. I don't really care if the next one doesn't have it though. Sucks your camera broke but I don't see how the curve would increase the likelihood of that happening.

This is probably the only thing I don't like about the G4s physical design, my phone lens has a few little scratches on it now since the camera is basically the first point of contact when you place it on a desk. The pictures from the camera have suffered from it and I'd only had it since november.
Apparently there's a gap between modules you can put in and the phone itself like the DAC AMP.
A physical gap.
That's horrendous design from what I hear, has anyone got info to elaborate? This could be a make or break deal for me if it makes the phone susceptible to damage or gunk buildup

Not sure about the damage, but what about people who don't wipe clean their phones regularly?
Seriously, most people don't wash their hands 98% of the times they're using their phones....

You don't need really big bezels though.
A bit, yes, doesn't hurts anyone.
But then again, my motto with phones is to never be above 5" in screen size and to be as small as possible but still above 4".
The compact series from sony are literaly perfect for me.

but it hurts my experience with it

i hold mine like this, and the bulging part below the thumb touches the screen, activating links and whatnot
no, i'm not in perfect physical shape, but i don't think i should get a worse experience on an handheld device

I don't see a gap?
I mean, sure there's that little indentation in the finish between the two portions but that's to be expected.
I don't see any sign, either in the video or all the pictures I've seen, of a physical gap that could cause any sort of damage.
My main concern is the extremely limited options for cases if I got, say, the camera + extra battery module.
Luckily I have a 3D printer so I'm not outright screwed if worst comes to worst :y

I think a silicone bumper case with the rear open would accommodate most modules if they don't change the height profile.
